cats keep peeing on things. why?
so recently, my cats keep pissing on stuff on the porch. they hang out there a lot, and we have a futon out there that has loads of comfy blankets on it. well, now they're pee covered blankets. and pillows. they did this once because the door to where the litter box is got closed while we were gone. but we cleaned it up and things seemed fine.
but today i went out and literally sat down in a fresh patch of pee. we lifted up the blankets and found another one or two spots that we hadn't noticed before. so apparently...they're just peeing out there all the time. WHY??
oh and how in the world can i get cat pee out of blankets.. i'm washing them today, but i have a feeling it's going to still smell once i'm done.
i wonder if they're mad at us for some reason, or if they think it's ok to pee out there now or what.
I don't know about the first peeing incident, but they may have continued to pee on it because it smelled like pee.
Sometimes cats pee outside the box/appropriate places because of UTIs; you can get their urine tested at a vet, but we've had a lot of cats continue to pee even without confirmed UTI and low magnesium food.
It's also possible that the stuff on the porch just smells like "outdoors" to them, and normally they can pee on outdoors stuff.
My sister had a problem with one of her cats peeing on her couch, and the kitty was tested, no UTI, but continued to pee. Finally the vet gave her antibiotics in case they missed the UTI on the test, and magically she stopped peeing. However, once the regimen of antibiotics was finished, kitty started to pee on the couch again. My sister knows her cat is a little neurotic, so she put salt water in the same syringe (as the medicine) and started giving that to her cat.
Her cat has never peed on the couch again.
So yeah, it's also possible for your cats to have attention issues ;D
She also had gotten some sort of rubber mat for her couch from a pet supply store... it's bumpy/spikey (but safe), and the cats won't go on the couch when it's there. It's uncomfortable for humans too, though, so you have to take off one of the mats to sit there. :P

The best thing for cleaning cat pee is vinegar.
Unfortunately at the moment we have far too much experience with this, as there is a big greedy bully stray cat who comes in and gobbles all of our cats' food, and also howls outside at night sometimes. This stresses out our cats, makes them (one of the boys in particular) feel threatened and territorial, and so they start peeing/spraying around the house. On furniture, piles of laundry, on the walls, wherever. :(

well, the smell came out of the blankets (just got back from the laundromat) so that's good. i was talking to my mom about it and she thinks it's because it smelled like pee anyway, so they kept doing it. her cats were doing that for awhile on a bathmat and once they finally threw it away, they stopped. so.. hopefully once i get all the smells out, they'll quit. i'll keep an eye out for any more symptoms of uti or kidney problems.
there IS a new cat in the neighborhood that hangs around the house and meows sometimes. i wonder if that might be part of the problem.

Some cats will "punish" their owners for lack of attention by peeing on "inappropriate" things. Or queens in heat that aren't allowed sex will pee on things special to you. A friend of mine found her oboe repeatedly peed on because of this. As she is a professional oboe player, it created problems, but she never did get the cat fixed, preferring to give her away. >:(
My cat would poop on my quilt under construction if he felt he wasn't getting enough attention, particularly if I was gone all day for a week working at conferences. I spent 95% percent of my time in the house in those days.
Our cats (or just one of them) will pee on anything that has been treated with Clorox spray etc.
i wonder if cats smell ammonia (from a cleaning product) and pee there because of it (urea from urine biodegrades into ammonia)
My cat' been peeing on things recently. THe only change in his life is that my dad is replacing some flooring. I can't figure out why he's doing it. Last night he peed ON my mother while she was sleeping. Then he peed in the litter box. Maybe he's sick? I'm trying to decide if I should take him to the vet this week.

I'd take him to the vet--could be a UTI.

Yes, they will! I've heard this before--that using an ammonia-based cleaner on pet stains will just cause the animal to continue to urinate there.
