Does anyone have pet chickens/other poultry/farm animals?

I was just wondering if anyone else has chickens. ducks, rabbits, pot bell pigs, etc. as pets.
I have three sweet and beautiful hens.  Unfortunatley, I bought then as chicks and didn't adopt them from a rescue.  (Plan on doing it next time around.) Still, they have a much better life then most chickens.  Full run of my backyard, sleep inside and lots of hugs and kisses.

Has anyone adopted a farm animal or support a sanctuary?

I just watched Last Chance to See (w/Stephen Fry) and crushing anthropomorhoembarrassment is exactly the feeling I was left with.  :-[

If you need help/inspiration with building stuff, I recommend a useful little book called Handy Farm Devices and How to Make Them by Rolfe Cobleigh.  It has relatively simple plans for building all sorts of things, from chicken coops to a bike-powered washing machine.

I may have spoken too soon, the rooster may still be alive.
My opinion about people remains the same.

1) YAAY! oh, i hope so...
2)yeah... me too... sigh! Personally have a hard time w/ 'last chance to see,' for reasons described above...

Please keep posting, re :rooster progress! My fingers are crossed, on his (and his rescuer's) behalf!!!

Capture--that sounds awesome, how did you get involved with that? I work with people and data all day and when my hours slow down in the summer I'm dying to do some kind of work or volunteerism with animals, but I don't really know where to go. So far most places seem to want money, which I don't really have, not my time, of which I'm very generous when it comes to animals.

I don't have pet chickens but I want them SO bad. I love chickens. I don't know what it is about them I just think they are so cute and funny. Once I visited a family friend who had chickens and they were a riot, and each personality was so different. I couldn't have them right now--would be too many animals for me to care for--but someday. If anyone has favorite resources for raising or just info about chickens I'd love to take a look if you post them.  :)>>>

Success!  We have an as of yet unnamed rooster!  :)>>>
He's missing a lot of feathers but is otherwise fine.
I put a brief post about him on my blog.

Heh, well I'll say confused and salivating, because with so many dogs some of them are always one or both.
So far so good with the chickens.  They've spent most of their time in an area that is overgrown and inaccessible, but they go into the coop at night.  They're in a fenced area so the dogs can't get to them unless they decide to fly out.  The rooster did that once, was chased across the yard by a dozen dogs (came out unscathed amazingly) and hasn't done it since.  Most of the dogs don't care, a few are interested, and a handful get too excited at the sight of them and rush the fence.  These http://dogsofcelestun.blogspot.com/2008/08/bette-shirley.html are the worst offenders, though I suspect they only want to lick them.
When the birds are more settled I'll introduce the dogs to them one at a time.  I don't know if we'll ever be able to keep them all together.  Maybe in a few years.  To be honest, they creep me out a little.  Little dinosaurs.  I need to be comfortable handling them before I can consider letting into the yard, just in case I have to come to the rescue.  The evil cat has been eying them up, but no incidents yet.  Fingers crossed.
btw Love your new profile pic HCM -so pretty!

(blush!) thanks SI!  :)

Love your blog pics... yeah, PROBLY licking is the goal... but still... glad that theory's not being tested anytime soon, lol! Also: love love love that you also have an improbability field at work near you! most of the time i find their work goes unnoticed, or gets chalked up to various whimsical deities...
