Input Needed 'Cause Cat's Not Eating [FINAL UPDATE]

I have a vet appointment for Friday, but in the meantime I want to tempt Cat to eat.  He's lost 2 to 3 pounds in the last month or so.  What are your cats' favorite foods.  I'd love to hear about their juicy favorites, because he still drinks things, but he's not eating.
<----------  :cat2:   :)>>>

My girl demands Sheba gooshy food.  I let her taste test every single canned food that did not contain unpronounceables or chicken 'meal' ick.  Both Baby and Gryphin prefer the chicken cans to the seafood ones.  Its probably not the best food available but its what they like and seams halfway decent.

Of course my kitties could be odd, Baby did eat three lettuce leaves last night.

All our best to Cat!  I hope he recovers quickly.

I'm sorry to hear your kitty is not doing so well.  I don't know how far you're willing to go to get kitty to eat, but last summer when my daughter's cat got sick and quit eating, we found that she would nibble cooked chicken livers.  I'm sad to say I'm currently feeding them to my kitty Bella because she is anemic and needs the iron.  I will not continue to do this once she is better.  Just something to consider.  I've hated doing it both times, but it was to save my kitties who are not vegetarians.  I'm sure you're looking more for cat food solutions, but if worse comes to worse....I hope it does not.

Lighting a candle for your kitty.

I have been known to split a can of salmon amongst my pack on occasion.  Cat may also respond to cod liver oil over his dry.  That's a very popular treat around here.  I get it at my co-op.

Awesome that he is drinking.  Is it possible that he may have gained a few during winter and is shedding weight for spring?  My Ansel varies a pound or two every year due to the seasons.  Simpkin is just always fat.

Good luck and happy thoughts. *fingers and toes crossed*

We've done a dry food soaked in gravey for our kitties in the past when they were ill, poor babies. Do you mind cooking meats like Storm said? If not, liver may be the way to go. Other wise, canned fish might work too. Good luck!

Chicken meal is actually OK; it's meat/chicken/poultry by-products that you want to avoid.  "Meal" is really cooked down meat, but it's at least still meat whereas by-products are the beaks, intestines, feed, feathers, etc.

HH, try AvoDerm canned food (this is the only canned food my parent's cat will eat); Innova canned food; California Natural canned food (really strong smelling, but might entice him)--anything with a strong scent will likely get Cat's attention.  You might also want to get some KMR (kitten milk replacer) if he's drinking but not eating--it will give him some good nutrients until you get him to the vet.

Good luck!  I hope he gets to feeling better!

He usually looks a little thinner in the spring.  I think it's a combination of his losing a pound and shedding his winter coat, but this is beyond normal.

He used to be about like this http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/data_root/image/global_images/technical_bulletin/77r_001_cat_ideal.gif

and now he's here http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/data_root/image/global_images/technical_bulletin/77r_001_cat_under.gif and headed towards http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/data_root/image/global_images/technical_bulletin/77r_001_cat_thin.gif

He loves tuna juice (but doesn't eat the tuna), so I'm going to try cod liver oil.  And kitten milk replacer.  I tried kisses, but they're not as restorative as I had hoped.

My cats is pretty much a savage....She kills little birds & gophers in our yard & fields. She's an outside cat. She's hilarious though, when she kills these animals she'll come to the deck with this special "i killed me some dinner" meow....You gotta love her though.

My cat doesn't eat cat food, not even the wet stuff. However, she really does like fish & chicken. One time my parents had some left over baked fish and I gave some to her and she loved it. She's also been given baked chicken and she loved that...She also enjoys drinking Half & Half....

ha ha, my cat was the SAME WAY with the same foods. nuts!

you can try to heat the food a little. sometimes if they can smell it they will come running. i doubt you want to cook meat, but you could see if someone will boil some chicken for you (or try canned)

you can also see if he'll drink broth. it isn't much, but it will put a little calories into him. i just hope he doesn't have something wrong. that's a lot of weight loss in a short period of time.

My cats will eat these regardless of how sick they are http://shop.halopets.com/Liv-a-Littles-Chicken

Sorry to hear about Cat.  I hope he is just having an off month.

Houdini goes back to the vet tomorrow for a stomatitis issue and Tony Danza went today for a UTI.  Sheesh!

my kitty stopped eating and would only drink stuff right before he died.. he would lick all the juice out of canned cat food and would lick oil out of pans and coconut milk.. but wouldnt eat anything solid.. then a little bit later he started to pee blood.. and the next morning he was dead.. it was the saddest thing in the world.. he was only 2.. poor kovitch.. i hope that doesnt happen to yur cat.. the kitten milk thing sounds like a good bet before you go to the vet... our kitty died from kidney failure so maybe ask the vet about that..

salmon, mackerel, sardines, raw organic beef liver, chicken, organic baby food (chicken, beef or turkey), cottage cheese, eggs.

Kitties generally love baby food.  Very good for an ailing cat.  Raw organic beef liver.  Cats love it.  Can pan fry lightly.

Very good for a healthy cat too.

I am not trying to start a veggie cat thread.  Cats need meat.  They are tempted by meat.  Maybe because they should be eating it and it is natural for them.

Do try the raw organic beef liver and baby food.  Mackerel and sardines have more nutrients than salmon and tuna.

Hope this helps.

Have nothing to offer in way of advice, but will be keeping Cat in my thoughts.  :)>>>

my kitties eat Wellness Complete Health dry and occasionally get a little tin of Wellness wet - any flavor variety.  i tried every single brand at the natural pet foods store (California Naturals, etc. - can't really remember them all!) and Wellness was the only brand mr. finicky would accept.  i support the canned fish/chicken and cod liver oil ideas, too.  my kitties only get wet stuff as a treat, so they get all worked up and smack and gorge and whatnot anytime food other than dry is busted out.

i'll also keep Cat in my thoughts.  a similar thing has happened to a couple people i know recently, and none had an easy fix.  good vibes to the universe for you and Cat.

one post reminded me of treats. cats love crunchy treats. towards the end cougi stopped eating a lot but would eat wet food if you spoon fed her (not that i can see cat being "that kind" of cat!) but she would nibble on her wisker lickens.

Eggs?
If it's kidney failure (when I was younger one of our cats died of that) you shouldn't feed protein--maybe try some grain product. I'm sure your vet will tell you that, though.

When my mother's cat was sick we fed him ham-flavored cat food. Ham is his favorite people food. He was really sick to the point that we had to buy a large syringe and squirt baby food down his throat. He fully recovered, though and is still tormenting the dog.

My dog Jackie got diabetes before he died, and stopped eating. We covered his food with cheap beef broth and he gulped it all down. I miss him.

I hope all turns out well and that Cat has a full recovery.

My baby Casey (RIP) stoped eating before he died too--he had massive kidney faliure-- icould not get him to eat or drink anything--tuna, chicken broth--you name it I tried--I ended up force feeding him wet cat food with a syringe--but that still didn't help and only put him under more stress--I'm sorry your kitty isn't feeling well--I wish all the best for you and kitty!!!! Hoefully kitty is just feeling blah and will be back in shape in no time--I' will send karma to you and your little one :) Let us know what the vet says :) :)

At my old vet, there was an aid there who's specialty was getting sick kitties to eat!! She literally had what seemed to be a "lab" going on in the kennel area. Her trick was mixing the gravies of various canned foods and then pouring them onto other different canned food.... Maybe your vet has someone like that who you could talk to to get some pointers as to which ones are "slam dunks"?
