Let's kill 1 species of animals to raise other animals: to kill!
The dogs woke me up early so I was just reading the news here while they are outside and came across this:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070517/ap_on_re_us/prairie_dogs_1
The way I look at it is that Ranchers want to kill the prairie dogs so that they can keep raising more cattle to kill. >:( I really like that they want the US Forest Service to do it for them! For anyone here that pays US federal taxes, that's our money....being used to poison the prairie dogs and any other unfortunate animal that comes into contact with the poison: a very slow, brutal and painful death. :-\
"Sixteen families that run cattle in the 20-mile-long basin depend on the grass that grows on their land and the pastures they lease on the adjacent federal Buffalo Gap National Grasslands."
Great that the government "leases" our Federal Park Lands to cattle ranchers...huh?! And these ranchers want our government to kill animals for them on their private property. >:(
I thought the US Forest Service was set up to manage and protect our lands, not to kill animals for private business....cattle ranching! I do support Defender's of Wildlife and I hope they take the US Government to court over this subject. They have before, and have had some good results. Not always, but they do a good job trying to protect our wildlife. The magazine I get from them always has lots of critical reports on the current Bush Administration, along with the Dept. of the Interior, and how they have tried to turn back almost every wildlife law since they have been in power. All the people in charge of protecting our forests, and wildlife are related to and come from a big business background (logging industry, agribusiness, factory farming animal prison camps, etc). If can, please support them (Defender's that is...not the "Dubya" administration) >:(
Here's their site:
The thing that always pisses me off about the ranchers is that they're behind the praire dog POISONING which in turn drove the praire dogs NATURAL predator, the Black Footed Ferret, to the edge of extinction. If they showed some restraint and left nature in balance, the BFF would naturally keep the praire dogs in control.
Instead, it's a poison fest all the way. >:( >:( >:( >:(
I often sign anti-poisoning petitions when I comeacross them.
Thanks for this new update. I'll pass it on.

This is VERY interesting! Thanks yogaferret for that info.
Praire dogs "trash their land"... um and I bet for sure that their non-green cattle farming is helping to maintian natural grasses and contributes to clean water! LMAO.... UGH... ::)
Ugh... I hate when I have to be mad at the government for MORE things.
Can anyone teach me how to sing "O Canada" with the proper accent?

They're (BFF) just recently making a little bit of a comeback through a captive breeding program. But every d**n time the rancher's bring up poisoning, it threatens their fragile habitats, not to mention endangering all the other animals who would naturally prey onprarie dogs.
95% of th BFF diet is strictly praire dog. There's a huge and FREE pest control company right there, willing and waiting to go.
Seriously, people, not just effective, but how could you resist??:

Hey Jennifer,
I'm a Canadian, I can teach you the accent. I have to say, things aren't much better here right now though. We currently have a conservative government with a prime minister who is trying his best to follow in dubya's footsteps.

Thanks for that link to the futureschannel. I passed it on to my DH. He'll be in love with the site! It's got a large section on Jaime Escalante, one of his all time heroes!
As for the prairie dogs, I hope there's an pro-prairie dog group in the area that can actively protest this. This is so wrong. National park land should be primarily for the animals not for the ranchers!

SO true TinTexas!
It's illegal to take a rock out of a National park, since that's what the park was established for, 'preservation' of the natural state of that area... yet you can just poison animals with taxpayer dollars so that more people can go to McDonald's??
Erik Marcus's book Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating goes into a lot of detail about how ranching is destroying a lot of public land, killing wild animals, etc. The most irritating part is that the ranchers only pay like $1 and change per cow to ravish the land. I suggest picking up the book though, it's just amazing how HORRIBLE it is to eat animal products! The effects are so far reaching.
Praire dogs "trash their land"... um and I bet for sure that their non-green cattle farming is helping to maintian natural grasses and contributes to clean water!
Yeah, and I'm sure the prairie dog poison is a great addition to the natural land as well... OK, so we have 1) killing prairie dogs, 2) killing cows, 3) killing ferrets, 4) killing the land.... wait, what was the logic behind this again?

Not to be a complete pessimist, but I'm from that part of the U.S. (from Montana and have family in South Dakota) and likely there isn't a pro-prairie dog group there. My boyfriend's father used to sell/market Black Angus cattle there, and the sentiments against "animal loving liberal hippies" are quite negative. The wolves are another species that is constantly being attacked by ranchers, esp. in Montana, at the same time that these ranchers are shooting the elk and deer that the wolves usually eat...makes no sense...

Yeah, makes a whole lot of sense, doesn't it? But these people who hate "animal loving liberal hippies" also hate "tree hugging environmentalist liberal hippies" as well. *Sigh* I'm going to be doing my undergraduate thesis work on the history of the U.S. diet and try to understand why people think the way they do and why they make the choices they do about food (and, subsequently and often unconsciously, about their health, the environment, and animal welfare). We'll see if there is any insight to be gathered ;)
I'd love to read your thesis when you're done, kbuettne! Sounds like a great topic.

You can still download a free copy of that book from vegan.com. It is a great book but hard to read sometimes (makes me so sad and so angry.)

I'd say the most endangered species in North America is "The Vegan." >:(
If there were a whole lot more of us, nobody would even be having this discussion about PD's, BFF's and herds of cows grazing on public land! ;)

MONEY!!!! :P
Don't forget 5) killing people with meaty diet
Another petition to try and stop the senseless poisoning of the Parire Dogs and all those in their ecosystem/food chain including the Black Footed Ferret - an endangered species.
The Forest Service wants to make it easier to poison and kill prairie dogs on the American plains -- risking creatures like burrowing owls, hawks, swift fox, the critically endangered black-footed ferret and the complex balance of life on the American Prairie.
PLEASE sign and help! There's not much time left! (BY JULY 23)

This is what I tried to add to the form letter, but I kept getting an error. :(
Please feel free to copy it 100% or modify it in anyway tomake your own statement more personal and have more impact.
Not only are you senselessly murdering one species, you are throwing an entire habitat out of balance. Nature will restore the balance if you allow it too. After all, you are in this position in the first place because by doing this originally, you drove the black footed ferret to near extinction. The black footed ferret is the Prairie dogs natural enemy. By allowing the black footed ferret to flurish and live, you allow nature to naturally and cheaply restore its own balance.
