New pet? Chinchilla...

I've got a friend moving back to TX in a couple months, and she's offered me her chinchilla. I am clearly a sucker for sweet fuzzy little animals (see Little Dog for evidence), I own my own home, and my dog is not much of a risk factor. (Obviously I wouldn't let them run around together unsupervised, but the dog is alarmingly sweet to rodents and has gotten along famously with guinea pigs, mice, etc.)

Does anyone have experiences with chinchillas? My friend really wants me to take him, b/c she knows I'm an animal lover and will treat him right. He's four years old now and apparently live until 15 or so. CW, I know you love your rodents... any advice or cautions?

Ernie.

Hey, our (well, my parents', now) cat is Sammy too! She's Sampson, b/c I was reading Romeo and Juliet when we got her, and I always had a fondness for the House of Capulet.

I would say he looks like an Ernest to me!  Those big dark eyes.  That sincere look.  Definitely.  Then call him Ernie.  hahah

He is so cute! That's what a chinchilla looks like! I have a friend who has a guinea pig, I always call him chinchilla, she just stopped trying to correct me. Now I see that they are different animals.  ;)b

She said he's currently named Chim Chim, but it's not a hard and fast name. :)

Okay, I gave her the thumbs up! We're going to go to Petsm@rt together in a week or two so she can show me all his favorite toys and treats and whatnot, and then the hand-off!

Keep the names coming, people. This is an important process.

He does look a bit like a Womble...and Womble is a pleasant round, chubby furry sound. Might be a good choice. You could give him a first name. Wombles are named after places, as
Orinoco Womble
Tomsk Womble
Uncle Bulgaria (Womble)
Wellington Womble etc. etc.

Two words: Dust bath.

If that's not a selling point, I don't know what is.

You want selling points? I have more... listen to these snippets from her email:

"Once he jumped into an open toilet bowl when running about and he had to be blown dry." HAHAHAHAH!

"He loves to be scratched under his chin and in his armpits - weird, I know!  When you scratch there he will close his eyes and stretch his arm out."

"I like to let him out in the bathroom because there are lots of ledges to jump on and off of and he's easier to keep and eye on and capture when you're done. He'll climb on you if you sit in the floor with him..."

Yeeeeee! Can't wait!
