I work with someone whose wife started Amigos de Animales - a rescue organization in Puerto Rico - and I could not believe some of the stories and pictures her husband shares. Apparently there's an infamous "dead dog beach" where people enact vicious cruelty on the poor, homeless dogs living there...just the other day I met Zara, a 3-legged dog who had 1 mummified leg when they rescued her. I've also seen before and after pics of a dog healed from a machete wound (wtf??), another who had acid poured over him that burned through his skin and exposed his organs...it's *@!%ing disgusting. :'( >:(
Anyway, a book was just published this week called "Street Dogs" by Traer Scott, and it features photography of homeless dogs in Mexico and Puerto Rico, including those on dead dog beach. So very sad, I had to quit looking through the book because it was making me cry at work. The good thing is part of the purchase of the book is a donation to help the dogs, though I can't remember exactly how much and where it goes. The open abuse of dogs in Puerto Rico is inexcusable and sickly cruel. >:(

Let us hope that at least some of that "outrage" gets channeled into a shakedown so that this doesn't happen again.
