RIP Victoria

Victoria, my 18 year old cat who I have had since I was 12 years old passed away this morning. She had a very bad reaction to being anesthetized on Tuesday to have a tooth pulled and has been suffering horribly with labored breathing and no food or water (by mouth) since then. I did not want her to suffer any more. May she rest in peace.

In happier times...

aw i'm sorry about that hopfrog, that's so sad.

Poor Victoria! And poor you, too. (Though it sounds like you made the right decision ... it's a hard one.)

I hope you heal from this.

Only so many cats make it to that age - 18!

I always have the "what if" thoughts when an animal companion dies, but there's really no room for that here. Cat dental care is a bit more serious than human dental care (or at least more immediately serious)... kitties with dental problems who don't get them fixed/the teeth taken out often get infections that go to the heart or cause kidney disease.

Your kitty is lucky to have had someone so caring in her life, and managed to stay with her for so much of it.

Victoria was a lucky kitty to have you. And you were lucky to have her for so long.

We love you.

Losing a pet is always hard, especially after you've been with them so long.

My parents' first cat lived until I was 18 and I can well remember how sad it was to lose a furry member of our family. I'm sorry to hear about Victoria. Take care of yourself, VegWeb is thinking of you  :flower:

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'm trying to keep busy, keep my mind off of it. My baby was due yesterday, so the week has been so stressful for me, worrying about Victoria and knowing the baby could come any day.  The timing was just all wrong.  It's been a pretty stress-free pregnancy, so I didn't know this, but it is physically difficult and uncomfortable to cry when you are very pregnant...

She had a great life and was well-loved. I just wish it hadn't been so sudden. I never would have guessed that Victoria would be dead at this time last week. The only reason we decided to get her tooth pulled this week rather than waiting until after the baby was because the vet said she was most likely in a lot of pain from the tooth and I really hate to think of her in pain.  Thought it would only take a day at the vet and another day or so to recover. It just didn't work out that way....but her suffering is over and for that I'm glad. I hope I have at least a couple more days until the baby so that I can mourn for her properly.

Thanks again everyone.

I am so sorry Hopfrog.  Victoria was a very lucky cat to have lived and been loved for 18 years.

Just this side of Heaven, is a place called Rainbow Bridge...
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to The Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER...

Big hugs,
Di

I'm really sorry (and crying) about Victoria.  Maybe it's because she's in white & black alliance with Cat.  Those are cute pictures of her that you shared with us.
