The Grit

I just recently bought this cookbook, and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried it. So far I've loved it- I've only made the Grit Yeast Gravy, Grit Style Tofu, & the Golden Bowl.
I've had it for years, but I've only made a few of the recipes.
The Spicy Thai Noodles are my go-to potluck recipe. People love them. My modifications: agave nectar and a whole pound of linguine instead of 12 oz. (the flavor of the sauce is pretty strong and can definitely stretch to accommodate a whole box of pasta). It's very easy to whip up if you have the ingredients on hand. (For an allergic friend, I'm thinking of making a wheat-free version using rice noodles and wheat-free tamari.)
Ages ago, I made the Tofu Meatloaf with Sage and Onion Gravy. I remember my brother really liked the gravy.
I must have made the Split Pea Dal, because I still have some Grit Indian Spice mix in my cupboard, but it must not have impressed me much because I've never made it again.
I loved the Golden Bowl at The Grit restaurant, but I've never tried to make it myself. I don't have the patience to make fried tofu properly. Before there was a Grit cookbook, their yeast gravy inspired me to track down a recipe. I've been using the one from The Farm Vegetarian Cookbook ever since (which is simpler and uses oil instead of margarine); so I never saw the need to use the Grit one.
Ooh- I'll have to try the Thai Noodles. I have to say, I've never been able to make tofu well, without deep-frying it (which I hate. too much fat. too much mess.), but the Grit Style Tofu was easy to make, and only used a little oil. You should give it a try. I'm in love w/ it!
Made the Tofu Meatloaf and the Spinach Quesadillas this past week. The Tofu Meatloaf was pretty good- definitely the best recipe for it that I've ever tried. It was better as leftovers, bc it was too mushy the night I made it. And the Spinach Quesadillas were awesome!!!!
Here's where I should probably disclose to anyone who might be reading that this is a vegetarian (not all-vegan) cookbook. (Michelle, I'm assuming you just subbed vegan cheese, etc. for the quesadilla.) :)
This is true. Most everything in there can be veganized.
