Breakfast
As you like it energy bars
These didn't hold together for me. Disappointing (dannibazaar)
Banana barley bars
They are wholesome, tasty, crunchy Grape Nuts cereal bars made with no oil, flour or sugar. This simple recipe combines the cereal with banana, peanut butter, agave with touches of cinnamon. The last time I made them I used half Grape Nuts cereal and half rolled oats and they came out great. The 8"x8" pan I pressed them in fit in my toaster oven. I've made these several times. Cut them into bars and stored them in a Ziploc bag in my freezer so I can just take one to work in the morning. (saskia)
Banana fritters
These are meh. An easy, quick way to use ripened bananas, but I'd prefer a healthier version. I halved it for 2 bananas, and made 5 fritters. They taste like banana, and the texture is just...ok. They are better with the maple syrup, but probably not something I'd make again. (AC)
Banana oat morning fuel
Great-tasting smoothie that is a filling and nutritious energy boost. This delicious drink is a blend of bananas, oats, peanut butter, nondairy milk, vanilla, cocoa powder and agave or maple syrup. I used organic vanilla rice milk and left out the agave/maple because my banana was super ripe and plenty sweet. The peanut butter enhances the taste of the Banana Oat Morning Fuel without being too strong. Fast and easy to make. I also like that the recipe was for made for one person. (saskia)
Banana peanut oat breakfast biscuits

Blackberry nut butter waffles

Buttermilk biscuits and gravy
Super yum! This was a nice change of pace. I added sausage crumbles because I couldn't help myself. (intheend)
Butternut drop biscuits

Carob chip waffles

Cast iron skillet frittata, four ways
Nice! A great, basic recipe and then you can add whatever you like, that's my kind of recipe. I've tried two of the variations and both of them turned out great. When I made the tofu mixture I thought it would become too dry with 1 cup of chickpea flour, but it wasn't dry at all. Once I had given it time to set (the recipe says it takes 10 minutes, I waited longer) it held together better than any other eggless frittata I've made. (eldsjal)
Chipotle sweet potato latkes

Chocolate breakfast cake

Chocolate chocolate chip pancakes

Cinna vanilla rice

Cookie crumble granola

Crunchy carob almond granola
I used cocoa since I'm not a fan of granola and really liked this. It has been the best granola I've made at home. (intheend)
Lemon currant cornmeal waffles

Macadamia yogurt granola
This was good but I have a sweet tooth and had to add 2 Tbsp of syrup to get it where I like it. I also made it with walnuts since I didn't have macadamias. (intheend)
Maple hickory tofu strips

Mexican hot mocha
Eh, nothing special. Not bad by any means, but nothing to do any extra work for. (disneyfav)
Muffin cup quiche in phyllo crust

No bake pecan brittle bars

No fail buttermilk pancakes
Not quite a fail for me, but definitely not the best. I followed the recipe (except heating skillet to really hot-I'd never do that for pancakes, they don't get done in the middle), and they were eh. The batter is not that thick, but the pancakes are too thick. They are thick, but not fluffy. Kinda dense and tough. I did get 6 smallish pancakes. Won't make this recipe again. (AC)
I tried them again and was surprised that I even liked them the first time around. It's a bummer because I wrote a review praising them but now I'd like to delete it! I made them so long ago I don't know if I made any modifications and just didn't write them down. Oh well. (intheend)
Noggy bulgur
Good, but too sweet, next time I'll use half the sugar. (disneyfav)
Peanut butter and chips granola
This did not turn out so well for me.  After the first 8 minuntes of baking, I went to stir it all around and it was already burnt.  I have an oven thermometer so temperature was not the problem.  I tried to pick some of the middle (non-burnt) pieces out and they tasted alright.  Not the greatest recipe IMHO. (icephrosty)
I made this off of the website and it did not come out.  It just fell apart but it tasted ok. (monkey7)
I really liked this a lot. I didn't use any chocolate chips...I used peanuts instead...super good if you like peanuts! It's really good sprinkled on soygurt. (dannibazaar)
Peanut butter and jam granola

Peanut butter oat bars

Peanut butter pancakes
These are AWESOME.  The batter came out really think but I didn't add any extra liquid because I wanted them to be dense.  Great PB flavor.  Two thumbs up! (icephrosty)
These didn't have a very strong taste of peanut butter and they kicked ass with some golden syrup poured on top. (intheend)
Pull apart cinnamon sticky buns

Pumpkin chocolate barley bars

Pumpkin molasses power bars

Pumpkin spice coffee

Pumpkin tofu scramble

Pumpkin yogurt smoothie

Sweet potato ginger waffles
Pretty good, they took a long time to cook in my waffle iron though.  I did omit the ginger and the candied nuts to make them baby-friendly. (berryraw)
Wheat germ raisin pancakes

White chocolate raspberry granola

Whole wheat couscous bowl of comfort

Zucchini fritters

Sweet and savory muffins
Apple candy muffins

Banana muffin tops

Blueberry orange muffins
These are good, but not my favorite blueberry muffins. I taste something missing, but I don't know what it is! I needed 2 1/2 large oranges for 3/4 cup. I also had to bake about 7-8 minutes more, and they maybe could have used another minute. Pretty good recipe. (AC)
Caramel apple muffin tops

Cherry pistachio scoffins
I had such high hopes for these but unfortunately, they were just hopes. After being baked, these are extremely dry and bland. They ended up being thrown out. (intheend)
Chocolate orange marmalade muffins

Coffee toffee muffins

Double chocolate muffins
Just meh. I've had better muffins made with just applesauce as a fat replacement. (dannibazaar)
Ginger cranberry muffins

Jam filled soda rolls
These were pretty bland. They might have been better had there been something added in the dough like nuts or something. I've had many a better muffin. (dannibazaar)
Lemon poppy seed muffins

Matcha almond muffins

Peanut butter muffins
Another winner.  I used chunky PB and the texture was great.  DH wolfed these down in one day!  I halved the recipe and then used the batter to make 4 big muffins instead of 6 regular ones.  Will definitely make again! (icephrosty)
Pumpkin carob muffins
I substituted the carob for cocoa powder and chocolate chips in this recipe. I ate one warm right out of the oven and wasn't totally wowed by them, wishing I had baked the pumpkin muffins in Vegan with a Vengeance instead. But then I had one the next morning and was pleasantly surprised by the marriage of chocolate and pumpkin flavors in this moist muffin! The recipe is also low fat(only 1/4 cup oil for a dozen muffins), low salt and calls for agave instead of dry sweetener. I used part agave, part date syrup. Great muffin. (saskia)
These tasted weird. I like the taste of both pumpkin and carob individually, but together...bleck. I tried letting them sit for a day to see if the flavours would meld or something but no...still bad. (dannibazaar)
Quinoa raisin muffins
Not your traditional muffin but very, very good. This meal muffin is packed with protein and peanut buttery goodness. Tastes like a chai-spiced peanut butter cookie in muffin form. Dense, sweet, moist with touches of vanilla, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg and sweet plump raisins. Batter is thick. I scooped it evenly into muffin tins with an ice cream scooper. Muffins only rose a little. Only problem with this recipe is that I don't know why the author didn't put "peanut butter" in the title since it's the dominant ingredient. Overwhelms the quinoa. But I'm not complaining though because I just really love peanut butter.  (saskia)
Savory tomato olive muffins

Speculaas muffins with chocolate ganache

Spicy chick wheat savory muffins

Zucchini poppy seed muffins

Dips and spreads
Avocado cilantro hummus

Baba ghanoush

Brazil nut bleu

Broccoli hummus
My favorite hummus variation so far! (eldsjal)
Butter bean dip

Creamy raw avocado spread

Curried butternut squash hummus
Love. I make this all the time. It's my favourite hummus recipe. (dannibazaar)
Nah, I didn't like this. Maybe it was something wrong with my curry powder, but I won't go through the trouble of making it again. (eldsjal)
Easy garlic spread for bread
This was not my favorite garlic bread. Something in the mix didn't combine well with the other flavors. It was still kind of enjoyable, but I much prefer other garlic bread. (AC)
Futtage cheese

Ginger cranberry sauce with cinnamon cream cheese spread

Kale tofu spread

Mushroom pate

Nacho queso
I used pickled jalapenos, omitted the bell pepper and cumin, and was really surprised at how awesome this was! I loved it and so did everyone else. (intheend)
Nutty cheese

Parsley pesto spread
I had high hopes for this.  I love chickpeas.  I love sunflower seeds.  And one of my favorite dishes uses a walnut parsley pesto.  However, I don't like this.  I think it was the blended chickpeas.  I know this makes me a bad vegan, but I don't like hummus. (katequeenofsprouts)
Red pepper spread

Salsa fresca
Since I omitted cilantro (I hate it), it was just a bunch of veggies thrown together with lime juice. Not too exciting. (eldajal)
Sesame bean spread
This recipe as written does not work. There's not enough liquid, so it's just chickpea crumbs. I added a full other lemon's worth of juice, some more sesame oil, and some water to get it to the correct consistency. There is also too much garlic for such a small amount of dip. It tasted primarily of raw garlic, with a bit of sesame oil. P liked it more than I did. Blah. Would not make again. (AC)
a simple chickpea and sesame oil spread. Loved it. I used a low sodium can of chickpeas, so I added some Maggi Sauce which was genious and made it awesome.  I ate the whole recipe alone in one sitting for my main course alongside the soup.  It screams for the addition of something like Maggi, Braggs or soy sauce in my opinion. (tweety)
Sun dried tomato pesto

Smoky black pepper cheese

Traditional hummus

Tzatziki

Walnut and currant veganzola balls

Warm chili con queso dip
Very good! But I added a bunch of stuff because I thought it lacked some oomph. More spices, more nooch, more miso, a tablespoon of tahini, lots of tomatillo sauce, a little ketchup and mustard and salt. Really liked how it turned out. Used it as a taco filling and it was awesome.  (eldajal)
Zucchini white bean spread
Pretty nice. Nothing spectacular going on, but good. I liked it more the more I had of it. Don't know if I'll make it again, but I'm glad I tried it. I salted the zucchini and pressed out the water before mixing it with the beans. I also used big white beans instead of cannellini. (eldsjal)
Snacks, appetizers, and finger foods
Avocado spring rolls

Cheezy quackers
Just so everyone knows, these are not Cheez-Its. If you love nutritional yeast like I do, then you'll like these. Making them as directed, they don't really crisp up like crackers. I had much better luck rolling them out even thinner. Then after cooking for about 12 minutes, I flipped them and cooked for another 8 minutes. They were actually were actually crispy this way! Yay! This will be a fun recipe to play with. I want to try them with cayenne or smoked paprika next. (kristinv)
Chili roasted peanuts
Followed the recipe, but didn't have Spanish peanuts. Pretty good. A nice little snack. I think it's a bit heavy on the cocoa powder, and needs more heat. (AC)
Curry couscous stuffed mushrooms
I made these mushrooms to accompany the roasted Romanesco & Brussels sprouts. The were rather a disappointment and I will not make them again. I like the idea but there's something missing and I just can't figure out what it is. Mango chutney? Ginger? More salt? It was way too much couscous for the mushrooms (8 oz = 12 medium cremini mushrooms). Note: I followed the instructions for preparing couscous on the package, not the 500VR recipe, which means I mixed the dry couscous with dry herbs & spices, added water and let it rest for 4 minutes (covered). Sauteed onion, garlic and mushroom stems in separate skillet. Then I added the 'finished' couscous to the onion mixture. According to 500VR I should have sauteed the dry couscous & herbs/spices with the onion mixture, adding water and stirring till all liquid has evaporated... Of course it could be that would have made the flavours come out better (esp. curry & garam masala). But as far as I'm concerned, it's not worth giving it another chance. (gnoe)
Garlic flatbread rounds

Ginger soy tofu satay with simple Thai peanut dipping sauce

Green phyllo samosas

Inari with spicy sushi sauce
I cheated and used japanese aburage but this was still very good! I liked the sauce, it was a nice addition to liven up something that didn't have much going on. (intheend)
Kale chips

Mediterranean egg rolls

Peanut butter and marmite savory cookies

Peanut butter crackers

Relish oat crackers

Savory cookies all' Italiana

Scarborough fair cream cheese wontons

Southwestern tamalliettas
These needed to bake longer than suggested so they wouldn't be so doughy inside, but I loved them with the chipotle ranch dressing.  On their own the flavor is good, but not anything too exciting.  I really love tamales so I was looking forward to getting the taste without all the work and these did a decent job of that. (berryraw)
Yalanchi dolmas

Salads and salad dressings
Balsamic vinaigrette and marinade
Good easy and quick dressing for a salad.  It took me three tries not to burn the mustard seeds and toast them properly, but that's because I'm a ditz and don't pay attention.  I cut down the amount of agave nectar from 3 tbs. to 1 because I like spicy better. (tweety)
Basic favorite dressing
Not my favorite dressing. It's ok. After adding some more salt and pepper, P liked it more than I thought he would. He's not a fan of vinegar dressings, but said it was pretty good. It's pretty basic, but didn't surprise me. Not something I'd make again. (AC)
California waldorf salad

Chipotle ranch dressing
Really great stuff, even though it's pretty thick so it's more like a dip than a dressing.  Tasted awesome with the tamalliettas, as the book suggests. (berryraw)
Cilantro cucumber salad
I'm not sure about this as written. I think it would still be ok and refreshing, but I added some tomato, splash olive oil, and agave. Light and tasty! P even commented how he liked it despite not liking cucumber. (AC)
Creamy balsamic dressing

Creamy curry coleslaw with roasted red peppers
Good.  I used purple carrots that I got from my CSA, so the color is not appealing.  I think a cup of mayo is a bit too much and I did cut down.  Perhaps my cabbage was too small because it still seemed t0o "mayo-ey" to me.  I used raw pumpkin seedsd instead of sunflower seeds, and I didn't have any raisons and didn't want to buy any so I used some dried cranberries I had on hand, and it worked well.  (tweety)
Cucumber, tomato, and quinoa salad

Deviled egg salad

Edamame caviar

Ginger and sesame infused carrot and cucumber salad

Jalapeno lime barley salad

Millet salad
Very good.  I followed the recipe except instead of pecans I added raw walnuts and cashews.  The apricots are an ingenious addition to something like this. (tweety)
Orange basil balsamic vinaigrette

Orange miso dressing

Orange poppy seed dressing

Orange sunflower dressing

Pistavocado rice salad

Presto pesto orzo and cannellini salad

Raw kale salad
Very good.  This is a simple easy to prepare vinegrette.  I spaced out thinking I had some toasted sesame oil, but didn't and used chili oil instead and it was still good.  I did not have lemon zest but used lemon pepper.  Forgot to add the sesame seeds after chilling, and used red mustard greens instead of kale.   It's pretty standard fare and I've made similar dressings many times from other sources. Another mini-rant though.  She calls for "seasoned rice vinegar".  Seasoned with what?  There are several varieties of rice vinegar at the store, not that I would buy anything but plain.  Again, it would have been nice not to take the lazy route, but include what seasonings an experienced cook could have used to create seasoned vinegar. (tweety)
Saag baag

Spicy Asia inspired macaroni salad
This sounded really odd but when I made it everyone was talking about how good it was. Definitely give this a shot if you want to try a different type of salad. (intheend)
Taboulleh

That  broccoli salad

Soups, chilis, and stews
Asparagus, cabbage, and potato chowder

Barley chili
a thick, hearty, flavorful chili with lots of bulk from barley, black beans, chopped carrot, zucchini and onions. I kicked up the spice level with more chili powder and cumin. Since the barley dominates the chili texture, I added a can of drained pinto beans and a half a can of undrained corn. I love barley but I think next time I'll only add 1/2-3/4 cup, instead of a full cup, so it's in balance with the beans. (saskia)
I enjoyed this.  It's pretty basic chili seasonings, nothing unique or imaginative here.  The use of barely is a good idea for something diffferent.   Stealling an idea from AC above, I used mushrooms instead of zucchini because mushy cooked zuchinni is unappearling to me. (I like it a bit crunchy and stir fried).   I used fresh hot chili instead of cayene, and I used the veggie broth option instead of water. (tweety)
Carrot, squash, and bean bisque

Chicken noodle soup

Chickpea masala
It didn't taste anything at all. I threw it all out. (eldsjal)
Coconut cream of mushroom soup

Coconut curry carrot soup
Very similar to the one from VWAV, which means I liked it. A lot. It was freezing here today, so it really hit the spot! (dannibazaar)
Cranberry chili
Awesome.  I made the pumpkin fauxsage to put in it and it was a lovely addition I really recommend.  I added a can of tomato sauce and used red instead of kidney beans. It was delicious. (berryraw)
Creamy tomato soup

Cumin carrot soup
I think this soup was too sweet for my soup preferences.  It also looked reminiscent of baby food.  If you don't mind a slightly sweet soup, this would be a good soup.  The flavors were interesting, just not to my preference. (katequeenofsprouts)
Disco stew

Ethiopian wat

Fig lentil soup

Green cauliflower masala
I didn't like this. It was just kind of gross. (dannibazaar)
Minestrone
I'm not a soup person, and especially not a tomato soup one, but I enjoyed this. (eldsjal)
This was good! Solid minestrone. Had it with Daiya grilled cheese on wheat buns, and it was a great meal. I made a few minorish mods-red bell pepper for green, some mushrooms instead of zucchini, and some tomato puree. I thought cayenne pepper was a weird addition for minestrone, so I used red pepper flakes. I added a few too many (bit too spicy), so I threw in some dashes of tarragon vinegar to sweeten it a bit. The flavor is great, veggies are good, good spice. (AC)
Parsnippity stew

Red jambalaya
This made a huge pot! My family and I ate some for days. It was very tasty though. (intheend)
Roasted eggplant ragout with cannellini beans and sweet potatoes

Rustic potato leek soup

Smoky black bean soup
I liked this soup but think it could use a little tweaking.  Next time, I will add more veggies and cook longer.  The beans were still a little hard after 2 hours of cooking.  I used smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke, but the flavor definitely came through. (icephrosty)
I am really enjoying this soup, with some modifications.  It seemed quite watery to me even after a few hours of simmering so I pureed it a bit to thicken it up.  Next time I might add a cup or so less of water.  I also used smoked paprika, cut the liquid smoke in half, and added a little vegan Worcestershire sauce.  It makes A LOT of soup.  It could use some extra veggies but it's a good soup I'll probably make again. (berryraw)
Southwestern bean and corn soup

Spicy gumbo z'herbes
This turned out amazingly. I've been hungry for gumbo for a while, but this recipe [i[seemed like it might fall short. I did make a few modifications. First of all, 1/2 cup oil in a soup is a TON. So, I cut the roux down by half, and I should have cut the liquid more. I like the soup the consistency it came out, but it should have been thicker for gumbo. I used carrot for the celery, kombu for dulse, and Cajun seasoning instead of file (totally different thing!). Nevertheless, my version was so surprisingly good. Oh, I also added corn. I was thinking the roux would make the soup weird, but I do think it's a special flavor. Yummy, yummy. Served with rice, and will make again. (AC)
Split pea soup
A hearty, smoky split pea soup with a hint of rosemary and dry white wine (optional) to enhance the broth. This soup is sure to please vegans and non-vegans, especially those who like a split pea with ham because it uses liquid smoke and  imitation bacon bits. I think next time I will leave the bacon bits out. The recipe, which I made in a slow cooker, will still be very flavorful without them.   (saskia)
This is one of my favourite recipes in this book and I make it all the time. It is simple, delicious, and I can actually get my little sister to eat vegetables this way! I seriously make it once every two weeks or so. It never lasts very long! (dannibazaar)
Delicious!  Mine took awhile to become less watery though, so next time I might cut down on the broth/water. (berryraw)
Sweet potato, roasted red pepper, and corn bisque

Tahini miso potato soup
I'm not sure what kind of sweet potatoes the author used, but all I ever see in the grocery store huge.  I think the recipe called for 6 sweet potatoes, plus some regular ones.  I used 4 large sweet potatoes and 3 medium red potatoes.  This was not my favorite soup...not even my favorite sweet potato soup.  I did not like the sweetness of of the sweet potatoes with the miso.  It was just weird to me.  If I make it again, I will use regular white or red potatoes.  Also, I added some chopped kale at the end instead of frozen spinach.  Ftr, Cams thought it was good. (lotus)

Pasta, grains, and potatoes
Au gratin potatoes
This was good, especially the leftovers. But there was something missing, I'm trying to figure out what... Maybe mustard to make it more cheesy? I will make it again sometime and try adding a tablespoon or so of that. And maybe also not use quite as much potatoes and fresh onion instead of powder. Still, I think it's the best vegan potato gratin recipe I've tried so far. (eldsjal)
Balsamic rice and orzo pilaf

Cheater mac and cheese
I thought the sour cream would be odd in this but it works and it works nicely! I like this version better than most other mac and cheeses I've tried.(intheend)
I was surprised that I liked this! Mum says that this is her favourite vegan mac and cheese, and I have to agree. Not sure what it is about it, but it's damn good. (dannibazaar)
Coconut rice with sugar snap peas

Creamy barley sotto
This was pretty tasty.  I used hulled barley that I cooked ahead of time and roasted the asparagus instead of sauteeing.  (lotus)
Dirty red beans and rice

Eggplant, lentil, and rice pilaf

Garlic and herb gnocchi

Ginger curry potatoes
Really good, but I love curry paste.  I used red instead of green. (berryraw)
Israeli couscous with curry, cashews, and currants

Kale pesto pasta
Not a huge fan. I love basil and pesto, but I do not love raw kale or fresh parsley that much. I thought maybe they would be disguised enough, but not so. P very much disliked it. I don't think the cream cheese adds anything. Enough said! (AC)
Leek, bean, and rice medley

Mac and sleaze
I tend to dislike all vegan mac n'cheeses but I'm out of groceries and needed something for dinner. I threw in some frozen mixed veggies and was surprised that I found this dish decent. Making the cheese sauce is painless and it was alright but I felt like something was missing. Like I said, I'm not to be trusted for Mac n cheese reviews but the only thing I was really into was the panko bread crumbs. (intheend)
Maybe if I would have used the soy milk instead of water I would have achieved the creaminess I desired from this dish, or maybe I should have added the extra pasta cooking water as suggested in the recipe, but it ended up a bit dry.  The taste was good and comforting, but the texture bothered me.  My husband loved it and stuffed himself with it. (berryraw)
Very good! I made a few mods. I used 12 ounces of spaghetti, about 3/4 cup nooch, some daiya, and more pasta water. The recipe makes way too much topping for an 8x8' casserole..especially for 8 ounces of pasta. I guess if you want a lot of breadcrumbs, it's good...but too much for me. I think the combo of (more) nooch and a bit of daiya is really great! Good combo of spices in this. (AC)
Mexiquinoa
Made my own salsa for this and used it in this recipe. This was a great idea and was yummy status. (intheend)
I'd never had quinoa before I made this, but I really liked it! I prepared it the day before to let the flavours meld together, and then we ate it cold with spicy chickpea burgers, guacamole and jalapeño-corn-gravy. Everyone enjoyed it, and we ate the leftovers for days. (eldsjal)
I made this with millet, and it was very good! Flavor came together more than expected, and it was excellent with avocado on top. (AC)
Moroccan spaghetti
Completely delicious. I really enjoyed the raisins in this dish. The seasoning was spot on and that says a lot considering I hate cumin but enjoyed it in this dish. There were a lot of different textures from the spaghetti, chickpeas, etc and that's what really stood out to me about this dish. I will definitely make this again. (intheend)
Mustard and spinach smashed potatoes
Liked these a lot but only used 2 tbsp of mustard instead of 3. I liked it better that way because you could still taste the mustard but it wasn't overwhelming. (intheend)
Pumpkin spinach ravioli

Quinoa pilaf

Quinoa with hazelnut parsley pesto
I thought it was bland. But that might be because I didn't roast the hazelnuts. (eldsjal)
Rosemary white wine roasted potatoes
Good side dish, but they take forever to cook.  I was impatient and took them out too soon, but they were still good.  I loved the addition of the dijon mustard.  Used sweet onion instead of red. (berryraw)
I agree with berryraw. These did take forever to bake..even longer than stated (55 minutes). I wasn't expecting to be that impressed, but the flavor is very good. The rosemary is not prominent, but everything is balanced. (AC)
Spicy frites
I'm a sucker for roasted potato spice combos. This was a new one for me since I don't think I've ever even had garam masala before! Luckily, my spice dealer erinmonster sent me some, so I tried these. Pretty good! A little sweet. I didn't taste a whole lot of the spices, so I would up them more. Good in mustard. (AC)
Tofu caprese pasta

Twice baked potatoes

Veggie fried rice
I'm always disappointed in my fried rice. It's never how I want it to be, and this was no exception. I thought maybe the simplicity might be the way to go, but eh. I didn't use the corn or optional tofu, and had cold brown rice. I think the fennel is strange in this. Nothing special, won't make again. (AC)
Whiskey sweet potato mash

Whole wheat pumpkin gnocchi

Casseroles and savory pies and tarts
Balsamic onion and potato topped focaccia

Caramelized onion tart with sweet potato sage crust

Chili and cornbread pie
This was inedible. The cornbread topping was perfect but the smoked paprika is just too overwhelming.  I would recommend adding only about a tsp or even less. I would make it again with that revision though. (intheend)
Curry cashew tofu bake
This is a lot of work and not worth the end result. It didn't get tossed into the trash so that's a plus but I would never make this again. The texture from the tofu part was odd. I hoped it would firm up but it remained sticky. I also made the optional garlic sage cashew cream to go on top but I felt it didn't really add anything significant. (intheend)
Enchilada casserole

Lentil tart with tahini crust

Mexican shepherd's pie
Freaking loved this!! I used the red seitan recipe from viva vegan and also used the red chile sauce from viva vegan. It was like a huge tamale pie.  (intheend)
Spicy chorizo veggie pie

Spinach quiche

Tempeh spinach rustic pie
Really good, but a little too orangey. Don't know if I'd bother making the pie again, but will definatly be making the filling again, which I think would just be good by itself. (disneyfav)
Tuna less casserole

Faux meats
Apple curry fauxsage

Apple sage fauxsage
This was this the first thing I made when I bought the book and felt that this recipe was worth the purchase alone! It's perfectly seasoned and I loved the texture. (intheend)
Asian inspired seitan crumbles

Baked berbere seitan

Barbecue beef sandwiches
I didn't make the sandwiches, because it's odd to me to have a seitan sandwich (bread on bread?). I was annoyed while making this, because the directions are quite vague, and I'm not a seasoned seitan maker. A "dice" to me is not really small, and I feel like the onions need to be really small for the dough. It was odd trying to get them all kneaded in. There's no time for kneading, so I just took as long as needed to form into a ball. Most of my liquid never absorbed even with cover off, so I didn't use a lot. I did make a few changes in terms of flavor-BBQ sauce for steak sauce, ketchup for paste, and yellow mustard. I think the seitan or broth could use some soy sauce for salt. I wasn't very pleased when I tried the seitan after 30+ minutes, but after chilling several hours it's really quite good. The texture is firm and kind of chewy. My 2nd best seitan (first good seitan with just boiling). I crisped it up in a pan. Mine wouldn't shred as the recipe states, but I didn't need that. Overall, good, but it does need more flavor. More BBQ sauce, more flavor over all. I'm not disappointed, but not extremely happy with the actual recipe. (AC)
Meh....what onions didn't fall out during the kneading fell out during cooking...I don't think adding chopped onions to the seitan was a good idea.  The bbq sauce was way too sweet for me...the writer asked for 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar.  I'm not sure what the writer means by pulling it apart with a fork...I know they are going for the shredded beef idea, but it doesn't work, or didn't work for me.  It made a huge amount.  (tweety)
I forgot to include a rant about the lazy addition of "steak sauce" in the "beef" recipe above.  I mean who the frick has steak sauce???  I made my own with ketchup, Worchester sauce, hot sauce, garlic powder and mustard.  The recipe would have been better served with ingredients such as these as an option to steak sauce. (tweety)
Basic seitan crumbles
I make these all the time. I usually put them in homemade marinara sauce. Quick, easy and yummy. (dannibazaar)
Beefy bacon burgers
Very beefy indeed! My omnivore family enjoyed them too, and said they didn't taste any difference between these and "real" hamburgers! Will definetely make again. (eldsjal)
Black bean grillers

Crispy seitan bacon
This is even better than the bacon bits! The most bacon-like faux meat I've ever had! Salty, greasy, a little sweet and with a perfect texture! (eldsjal)
Crispy tofu fries

Curried tofu sandwich filling

Grilled tempeh in kickin onion marinade
I don't think this would be great as is, but I liked how mine turned out. I can't imagine using a whole large onion for this, but I used about 1/2. I used fresh jalapenos, some BBQ sauce, and agave. I loved the BBQ sauce addition, and liked the final result. I think it was P's favorite tempeh, ever. He's never been a big fan, but liked this. I pan fried it. (AC)
Ham fauxsage
this was surprisingly good! It's sweetish, a little smoke-y but not overly so..I daresay, meaty. It's been too many years since I've had actual ham to say that it tastes like ham, but whatever it is, I like it! I chopped it up and put it in leftover mac and "cheese." Yum! (dannibazaar)
Texture was off but the taste was good. (berryraw)
This had a good taste, but a weird texture.  It didn't come together very well, so I added a little extra gluten. It was still weird, but not as dough-y as it felt before the addition.  I sliced it into small pieces for the Monte Cristo Reuben and it was pretty good. (lotus)
This pretty much sucked for me. I followed the recipe, but it was so wet, I added some more VWG. I also added close to 1 tsp salt instead of 1/4. It looked promising after baking, but was just like a bready loaf with blandish (not ham!) flavor. Not nearly salty or smoky enough, and I used the 1 tsp liquid smoke. I ended up dicing it and crisping it up with some bragg's, liquid smoke, and nooch, but it's still just very meh. Did not like it at all. (AC)
Imitation bacon bits
Awesome. I don't usually like TVP, but this is just great. You can make a big batch on the weekend and use it all week, with everything. In tofu scrambles, with pasta, in salads, in burgers and sandwiches etc etc. I add about two tablespoons of soy sauce and a little ketchup, but it's not necessery. (eldsjal)
These were good. I used them in the colcannon. It kind of freaked me out how much my kitchen smelled like bacon after making these. (dannibazaar)
Independence day wieners
Good. I'm not sure if I'll make these often (so much oil!) but they taste good. Definitely an indulgence! (dannibazaar)
I never liked hot dogs and haven't found a veggy-dog I like yet, so I don't know why I made this recipe, but I REALLY enjoyed these dogs!  It had good smokey flavor and a good sweetness to it.  I made some of the dogs bigger and some smaller - the bigger ones need to bake a little longer for better texture, imo. (berryraw)
A half cup of oil is some serious shit. I wonder if you actually need to put that much since when you're mixing it it's just soooo oily. Either way, these are really good and have the perfect texture. The taste is subtle which is great so that it doesn't overwhelm the toppings. (intheend)
Laurel and Hardy peanut fauxsages

Oktoberfest wieners
I was really disappointed by these but my mom snarfed them down and enjoyed them and she is an eater of bratwursts and such.  (berryraw)
Oven smoked tofu, three ways

Pumpkin fauxsages
Can't really taste pumpkin, but the taste and texture is really good.  It went great in the chili as it's a bit spicy. (berryraw)
I'm not too excited, not bad, but I guess I was expecting more.  I don't think it was spicy enough.  I forgot to turn it over halfway in the oven and the bottom was a bit crispy.  I will say it was very good in the pumpkin marinara, so I guess I'm disagreeing with the writer that it's good on it's own.  It makes a huge amount. (tweety)
Tweety is right, this is VERY bland and I wouldn't make it again. It kind of has a sweetness to it so it worked well with the sauce that I made but because of that sweetness I wouldn't bother trying to put it in another dish. (intheend)
Seitan bacon crumbles
This has to be one of the best recipes in this book! The crumbles come together fast and are perfectly salted with a nice smoked taste. (intheend)
Yummy!  And so easy and quick!  I made a vegan quiche and put these in it and it was awesome. (berryraw)
These have a perfect bacon flavor. I like them with tofu scramble in a breakfast burrito. Mmmm.... (eldsjal)
Seitan chorizo crumbles
Very good. Easy and so tasty! (eldsjal)
Thai tofu
My husband loved this.  I thought it was a mediocre peanut sauce, not spicy enough for me. (berryraw)
Traditional boiled seitan

Main dishes
Apricot glazed roast
My husband LOVED this and he's not a huge seitan fan. I, however, only thought it okay.  It was moist and flavorful but it just didn't do it for me.  I think he wants me to make it again. (berryraw)
Baked chimichangas
These were a success! They are so tasty but unfortunately they don't make a lot so if you're trying to feed a family of 4 then you need to double this recipe. I served them with guacamole and extra salsa on top. Absolutely loved these and you will too! (intheend)
So awesome! Why did I wait so long to make these? Very simple and easy and fast to make. The cheesy salsa was to die for, I think you could stuff the chimichangas with pretty much anything as long as you cover it with that sauce. I didn't have enough tofu or black beans so I added leftover zucchini white bean spread to the filling, turned out more than terrific! I will be making this a lot in the future! (eldsjal)
Baked eggplant parmesan
This was better than expected. I've often been let down by baked eggplant things, because fried eggplant is so good! I salted my eggplant, and used almonds instead of walnuts. I think I baked at 400 instead of 350. The texture was nice, and flavor was good. Not spectacular, but solid. Really easy. (AC)
Black bean, corn, and roasted chile quesadilla

Butternut squash hummus white lasagna

Carciofi farciti (Italian stuffed artichokes)

Cauliflower pasta crisp
This is so insanely creamy and decadent. I used the least amount of pasta cause I like a lot of sauce and when eaten the next day, it didn't completely soak it up so that was a plus. The only thing I would change is to omit the lemon zest in the topping. I just felt it was too overpowering.  (intheend)
Tastes like chicken, in a good way! And so creamy! But next time I make it, I wont add the bread crumbs on top, it was way to much. (eldsjal)
Chiles rellenos

Chorizo tacos with chunky roasted veggie salsa

Colcannon
This cooks up pretty fast and is filling. I loved it and would make it again. (intheend)
Totally delicious. I'm going to have to make this more often. It's definitely an omni friendly dish (how couldn't it be...it's basically mashed potatoes with a bit of pizazz) (dannibazaar)
Crispy coconut tempeh nuggets
Total fail. The batter was extremely thick so I tried to thin it out but it fell completely off the tempeh so essentially it was just coconut fried tempeh. (intheend)
Eggplant lasagna

Eggplant marinara pizza

Fajita pitas
I just got done eating this and am still thinking about how awesome it was. So instead of using bell pepper I used 2 anaheim chiles and it ended up being a great substitution. They stood just a little bit crunchy so it worked great for texture. This definitely makes 6 servings worth and I was able to cook it in one shot using my wok but if you don't have one, you'll be making it in two batches. I made my ranch dressing from this website and just added a chopped chipotle pepper and a few spoons of adobo sauce. When you put all of this into a homemade pita that's still warm and top it with some chipotle ranch, life is good. (intheend)
Festivus loaf

Ginger lime tofu

Granny's meatloaf
My omni family and I enjoyed this immensely. However, it was a little dry on the inside so I think next time I would rehydrate the TVP with 2 cups of "beef" broth to see if that would help. (intheend)
This didn't turn out well for me. It tasted pretty good, but it was all stringy inside. (eldsjal)
Lemon herb coconut tofu with udon
Borderline meh.  Nothing exciting here.  A+ for uniqueness as it has coconut milk, lemon, dill, basil, parsley and curry powder, along with a whopping 7 tbs. of chives and 1/2 cup of scallions which are combinations you don't see.  It calls for 3 tbs of lemon juice which is too much for my tastes.  I beginning to find out at this age that too much lemon in dishes isn't a good thing for me...gotta add that to my "inner voice" and take notice.  I used pad thai rice noodles instead of udon. (tweety)
Mamou's stuffed tomatoes

Monte cristo reuben
The bread for this was delicious.  I have never sauteed the sauerkraut with the "meat" before when I've made reubens.  I really liked it that way.  I added some crushed fennel seeds because I like the flavor with the kraut and made a 1000 Island dressing with vegenaise, ketchup, and pickles.  Yum! (lotus)
Moo goo gai pan

Multigrain pilaf

Mushroom lasagna
Wow, wow, wow. So creamy and comforting! Couldn't stop eating, it's so good! (eldsjal)
Nutty stuffed veggies

Peruvian tamales

Potato stuffed portobellos

Pumpkin cranberry tamales
I had been looking forward to making these for a few weeks. It bums me out to report that they are awful. They are extremely bland and not even sweet. Nobody could eat these in my house so into the trash they go. (intheend)
Red meat lasagna
Insanely good. It's kind of your basic tofu ricotta- red sauce lasagna, but I loved it.  (dannibazaar)
F'ing owned. I skipped on using TVP and instead grounded up some VB italian sausages. Also added mushrooms cause I had some that I needed to use. The ricotta was delicious but I felt it didn't make enough for this dish. I'd double it next time. (intheend)
This one is incredible! It's just perfect in every way. Go make it, people! (eldsjal)
Rosemary apple potato rosti

Seitan en croute

Seitan poppers

Stuffed chiles
I doubled the recipe and used 8 oz of seitan which ended up being the perfect amount (since I doubled the recipe it was supposed to be 12 oz but that seemed too much). I added the optional miso so that I wouldn't have to do a salt check. Alone, the mixture tastes kind of funky but don't let that deter you. Once you stuff it in the poblano and bake it, it ends up being divine! I poured the enchilada sauce (made from this book also) over it and devoured it.  (intheend)
Sweet and sour tofu

Tofu marsala
We eat Tofu Marsala at a local restaurant and I have been looking for a good recipe to make at home.  This was pretty good, but I would tweak it a little next time.  First of all, I used shiitakes and let the tofu simmer in the mushrooms and marsala for much longer than indicated, probably 20-25 min on each side.  The tofu still had a bit too much alcohol flavor, so maybe I should have either simmered a little longer or simply reduced the wine.  I've seen tomato paste used in some marsala recipes.  I think that may be a good addition to this sauce.  I will probably try that next time.  (lotus)
Traditional tamales

Veggie chow mein

Veggie curry feast
This was alright but I found it kind of bland. After the cauliflower is mashed into the coconut milk it just absorbs all of the liquid so there's no extra sauce. I served it on top of rice so it was pretty dry. (intheend)
Veggie enchiladas
These are good. P wasn't impressed, because he thought they had too many mushrooms, but I didn't think that at all. I'm surprised that he thought that, but he said they were "overpowering." I used a green pepper instead of red, and small flour tortillas (maybe just a tad bigger than corn). I wanted to make the nutty cheese, but I've never had agar. I used rotel for the jalapenos on top. I wish I had olives, but didn't. I also added 1 zucchini to the filing. I was tempted to add chili powder to the veggie filling, but resisted, and liked it. I think they are good enchiladas, and recommend adding the zucchini. (AC)
This was very bland. The only thing that tasted anything was the enchilada sauce and I didn't even like that sauce very much. I made the mistake to not taste the refried beans before adding them, so the filling tasted pretty much nothing. For the cheese, I used a homemade block of cheddar cheese that I crumbled, and it was ok. If I made these again I think I'd use a cheese sauce instead. But this took a lot of time and effort to make and I don't think the end result would be worth it even if I made it spicier. I'll just stick to the chimichangas. (eldsjal)
Veggie tofu bake

Very veggie shepherd's pie

White pizza
Divine!! This was a big time omnivore approved recipe. It was made from three recipes which were pizza dough, Bechamel sauce, and Oven Smoked Tofu. The oven smoked tofu was so good I even used it in sandwiches and ate some as a snack. The bechamel sauce was good but you definitely have to use it as soon as possible because it just becomes this weird mix of butter and flour. The pizza dough was great also but a pain to roll out because of the gluten. I'll stick with my own pizza dough next time.(intheend)
Amazingly delicious. It's my new favourite pizza. Ever. (dannibazaar)
I prefer regular pizza with tomato sauce. Not something I'll make again. (eldsjal)
Side dishes
Balsamic roasted asparagus with pearl onions

Barbecue baked beans
Good...having cooked and sampled the sauce in the sandwiches, I decided to cut down on the brown sugar in this recipe and I'm glad I did.   I did not have grape jelly and just omitted it.  I accidentaly opened dice tomatoes and noticed too late, but it didn't matter to me.  This recipe is not baked. (tweety)
Cannellini all' Italiana

Cannellini, tempeh, and couscous bake

Chili lime corn with smoked tofu

Chorizo, cranberry, and cornbread stuffing

Creamed corn

Creamed spinach

Creamy boiled leeks

Curried apple sprouts
This is a combination of ingredients I'd never thought of before and absolutely LOVED it!  I'll definitely be making this again, it's a great dish for the holidays. (berryraw)
Fried zucchini

Garlic and mustard roasted brussels sprouts
I've made similar brussels before, but these came out really delicious. I didn't use a full 1/4 cup agave or oil, but I didn't really measure the ingredients, and probably had less than 1 pound brussels. Anyway! The flavor combo is great. I would never roast something at 350, so I did about 400 until tender and slightly crispy. Delicious. (AC)
Greek stuffing

Green bean almondine (with a twist)
I don't think there's anything special or twisty about this recipe. Pretty basic, really. Easty, tasty, and healthy, though. I did add some lemon juice. (AC)
Oranger than thou carrot coins
Didn't really like these, but I don't think we like cooked carrots as a side dish. The flavors are pretty strong, and slightly strange together. Not my thing. (AC)
Refried beans
Needs more spices, as written it tastes just like mashed beans. But that's easy to adjust, I added 3x the spices and salt. I used home cooked beans. With more spice it was very good and it's a good, easy, basic recipe. Used it in the enchiladas. (eldsjal)
Roasted butternut squash with caramelized onion, garlic, and fennel

Roasted garlic steamed broccoli

Roasted harvest vegetables in garlic sauce

Roasted lima beans
These were good.  Simple and quick to prepare and a great, different side dish. (berryraw)
Sesame garlic wilted kale
This is about as basic as it gets with kale, and not anything new. However, the actual recipe is flawed imo because there's no type of salt added. I don't want my kale without some salt! So, I added a few splashes soy sauce and let that cook off. The main thing with kale, for me, is to make sure it's perfectly tender, but not too done. (AC)
Spring beans in raspberry sauce

Sweet and spicy edamame with mandarin oranges

Sweet glazed baby carrots

Traditional bread dressing

Vegetable fritters
The recipe said it would make 6, and to cook them all in the pan at once. I had a cast iron pan, could fit 3 in at once, and it made 12. :| They were good, in the end, just didn't yield what it said it would, and it took WAY longer than I had anticipated since I had to do 4 batches at 10-12 minutes a batch! (rabidchild)
I don't know what I was expecting, but I didn't like these very much at all.  I followed the recipe and made six HUGE fritters.  Maybe I should have made them thinner, but they turned out thick and bready...and a little bland.  Cams slathered his with tofutti sour cream and said they were good that way. (lotus)

Sauces and condiments
Bechamel sauce
Very easy to whip up and very delicious. I had it on the white pizza and used leftover for dipping steamed veggies in. (dannibazaar)
Tasty! I put it on the White pizza. I'm gonna use this with other things in the future, like lasagna. (eldsjal)
Berbere spice blend

Broccoli pesto

Chili water

Chinese five spice powder

Cilantro pepita pesto

Coconut peanut sauce
Amazing sauce! It tasted best when it wasn't too hot, like room temperature. I had it over soba noodles one day, and with pasta and broccoli the other. Both days I licked my plate. I'm sure it would be great with spring rolls or with baked tofu and rice! Or anything! I used full-fat coconut milk instead of light and it was really creamy. The spices were perfect. Can't wait to make it again! (eldsjal)
Creamy pumpkin almond sauce
This is a fantastic super thick sauce. I used unsweetened So Delicious Coconut Milk and 1/2 tsp garlic powder instead of actual garlic. I thought the addition of almond butter would be odd but it blends in and you don't even notice it. I chopped up some of the pumpkin fauxsage to throw in and it ended up being a great addition. I served this on top of pasta. (intheend)
Curried cauliflower puree
I ate that stuff for about 4 days in a row. Loved it - never got tired of it either.  I'm looking forward to making lots of recipes from this book since it's easy to omit oil most of the time. (pinemeadows)
Curry ailoi

Curry powder
This is good, but I still prefer storebought madras curry powder... (eldsjal)
Enchilada sauce
I have to be honest and say that I thought this wouldn't be that great since I never use tomato sauce for enchilada sauce. I'm glad to be proved wrong though! This has just the right amount of spice and a tad bit of smokiness from the chipotle powder. (intheend)
Didn't like it very much. Tasted too much coffee. It was okay when I mixed it with beans and cheese for a burrito filling, but I didn't like it on the enchiladas. (eldsjal)
Fire roasted red pepper cream sauce

Garam masala mix

Garlic and sage cashew cream sauce
There is no way this would make enough to cover the ravioli that the book suggests it with. It ends up really thick and clumps from the ground cashews. The taste is alright but would not recommend this. (intheend)
Gaucho marinade

Hot and spicy buffalo sauce

Kale pesto
As I said in the pasta review, we didn't like this. The flavor of raw kale and parsley are still prominent. I love basil and pesto, so it was saddening that it didn't work out. Adding spinach to pesto works well for me, but not raw kale. She does suggest that you can steam the kale (but that it shouldn't be necessary), but I don't want to try this again. (AC)
Meaty marinara
This will now be my go-to recipe for lasagna and pasta sauce. (intheend)
I love this! I use "sausage" TVP  and brown sugar or more maple syrup instead of molasses. I have made it many times, to put in lasagna and to eat with pasta, sprinkled with faux parmesan. (eldsjal)
Orange chipotle barbecue sauce
So delicious! But it was too spicy for two members of my family so if you have problems with spiciness, knock the chipotle down to 1 tbsp and you should be fine. (intheend)
Pickled fruits and veggies

Pistachio pesto

Secret sauce

Simple cheezy sauce

Smoky pumpkin marinara
This is so delicious! It sounds like an odd combination of ingredients. Pumpkin puree, tomato sauce, liquid smoke, chili powder, etc. but it all comes together nicely. Of course, it tasted even better topped with some nooch. (intheend)
Delicious!  Thinking to combine pumpkin puree, tomato sauce and chili powder is pure genius and very unique (at least to me).  It tasted very good with the pumpkin fauxsage I made.  It might have been better with a more chunky sauce like crushed or petite tomatoes instead of sauce. (tweety)
Soppy brown gravy

Soymilk mayo

Sun dried tomato sauce

Sweet pickleless relish

Taco seasoning
Needs more salt, otherwise good. (eldsjal)
I loved this!  I made the seasoning and used it the following way: sauteed some onions, green peppers and chili peppers, then added water the spices and mixed, and added a lb of crumbled tempeh and simmered until the water was gone. Delish!  If I didn't have any chili peppers I would have added some cayenne to the mix.  (tweety)
Takeout style orange chicken glaze

Tofu feta

Tofu mayo

Tofu ricotta
This has been the best ricotta I've tried so far. I was trying to put less oil but you actually do need it after the tofu is pressed. I think next time I make this I won't press the tofu so that I don't have to put so much oil. (intheend)
This is my favorite tofu ricotta recipe! (eldsjal)

I make this every other week.  It's my favorite quickbread recipe, though I replace a little of the oil with applesauce.  I would marry this quickbread if it was legal.  The only problem is that other than this recipe, I haven't liked anything else in this book nearly as much. (katequeenofsprouts)

Zucchini quick bread

Sweet and savory yeast breads
Agave bread
I made this the other day to go with a spicy soup and it was delicious! It is sweet and soft and fluffy.  However, I have never made such a mess with bread before and I almost trashed it.  I mixed the wet ingredients into the flour and it was WAY too wet.  I must have added a cup more of flour and still couldn't even knead the dough.  It was a sticky, frustrating mess.  I calmed my emotions though and decided to just throw the bowl over the glop  and wait to see what happened.  It rose tremendously!  I punched it down a bit and decided to just hand form it on a baking sheet instead of loafing it.  It was easier to work with then.  I'm glad I didn't give up on it, but, wow, what a mess! Cardamom sugar cookies

Cherry almond cookies

Cherry oatmeal chocolate chip cookies

Chewy ginger cookies
Nice, simple, and yummy. Just your average ginger cookie, though. Nothing special - but good! (dannibazaar)
To satisfy P's craving. Worked well. Not as sweet as most cookies, a bit on the spicy/bitter side, but good. Easy. I added a bit of nutmeg, and some candied ginger on top. Good flavor, soft texture. I went with the 8 minutes, but maybe needed a bit more to be chewier. I made 12 cookies. Good, simple ginger cookie. (AC)

Open sesame cookies

Orange cappuccino cookies
I subbed agave for the 1/4 cup of maple syrup, but otherwise followed the recipe. Well, I can't remember what flour is used, but I had AP. I did have to add about another tablespoon of milk to make a good dough. I was not expecting to love these, because I wasn't pleased with other agave cookies, but these are great! There's no coffee flavor, which seems to be the case with most espresso recipes (only 2 teaspoons used), but the orange flavor is good (not too strong), and the texture was fabulous. They were an exceptional kind of chewy, with a bit of crunch. I think the 14 minutes baking is perfect, and I did get 12 cookies. I would add less than 2/3 cup chocolate chips/chunks, because I could barely get 1/2 cup incorporated. P loved them, as well. I think the whisking in of the raw sugar to dry ingredients (as opposed to with wet) helps with the nice texture. (AC)

Lemon ice box pie
I used raspberry lemonade and tofutti brand vegan sour cream in a graham cracker crust. It took a bit longer than I expected to create the condensed milk, but it was a simple recipe. I could hear my husband downstairs saying "MMMMMMM" loudly as he had his first bites of the pie. It's absolutely delicious and perfect for hot weather. It's not too tart, not too sweet- just right. Since our weather gets above 110 degrees this time of year, I expect this will be on frequent rotation. I'd give this recipe an A. If you're looking for a satisfying dessert for hot weather, try this one immediately. (bellybellygood)
Mango blueberry crisp

Oatmeal cookie topped apple crumble

Holy crap these are amazing! I omitted the margarine completely and used unsweetened chocolate and used only 2/3 cups of sugar rather than 3/4 cups (half brown sugar and half white). They're a great combination of fudge-y and cake-y. They're so nice and dark...definitely one of my favourite brownies that I've made. The texture is also surprisingly nice, not all crumbly like other things that I've made with brown rice flour. I would like to document my sister's reaction. So I was just like "Hey, I made brownies if you want one" She responded by saying she was still full, maybe later. I said "try one they're really good! Like chocolate heaven only better!" So she obliged, took a nibble, went all wide eyed, said "ohmygod yum" and shoved the whole damn thing in her mouth. It made me laugh. (dannibazaar)

Pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting

Smoky chipotle chocolate cupcakes

Sour cream frosting

Strawberry bundt cake
I used store bought jam instead of making the strawberry reduction...which was a mistake. It was bland and gross. And a little gummy :\ (dannibazaar)
Sweet corn cake
I made this some time ago and forgot to review it.  It's so darn good it was gone the next morning!  I think it could have baked for less time and it would have been more like spoonbread - a non-vegan treat my family loves with Mexican food. (berryraw)
Triple vanilla cake

Vanilla cupcakes

Yellow cake
When I was making the batter for this I was tripped out by how bread-like it was. I double checked the ingredients list to see if maybe I missed where it called for milk but I didn't. It rose nicely in the oven but when it came to flip it, the bottom was a hot mess! I let it bake for 28 minutes and my toothpick came out clean but it was completely gummy at the bottom. This was such a bummer too because the taste of the cake is down right decadent. (intheend)
Candies and bars
Baklava

Black bean brownies
exceeded my expectations. They're not your typical super sweet chocolatey brownie. But they are quite tasty, flourless, healthy and easy to make. The brownies are an interesting blend of black beans, bananas, oats, coconut, carob powder and nuts. The dates, agave and raw sugar add just the right amount of sweetener without giving you a sugar rush when you bite them. The coconut complements the brownies well so the banana doesn't dominate the flavor. The brownies taste great chilled, right out of the refrigerator, with a glass of almond milk. (saskia)
Butterscotch (or white) chocolate fudge brownies

Cappuccino caramels

Chickpea blondies
If you blended a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with garbanzo beans, it must taste like these Chickpea Blondies. These soy-free, gluten-free, guilt-free treats are made with garbanzo beans, jam, peanut butter, flax seed and a few other ingredients. This interesting combination of ingredients came out tasting really good. Don't expect a rich, thick, peanut buttery and sinfully sweet blondie, like Isa's in Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. The Chickpea Blondies have their own distinct, delicious taste. Best enjoyed chilled with a glass of almond milk. Next time I think I'll double the baking powder because they didn't rise much. You can see a photo and recipe here: http://havecakewilltravel.com/2009/02/26/chickpea-blondies/ (saskia)
Chocolate tahini no bake barley bars

Cinnamon apple pie bars

Gluten free fudge brownies

Macadamia and white chocolate crispy treats

Maple pine nut bars

Molasses cake bars
molassesy sweet, moist with oats, raisins, and hints of cinnamon and ginger folded into the batter. They taste like cake, yet they have no sugar and are lowfat--only 2 tablespoons of oil, and optional nuts, in the recipe. Easy to make. No egg replacers or hard-to-find ingredients either. They make a nutritious snack, or a wonderful morning cake with your coffee or tea. (saskia)
Very yummy, and pretty healthy. I really like anything with molasses in it so...these were inherently good. (dannibazaar)
Monkey bars
I followed as directed except for one thing - I didn't make the caramel sauce recipe. Instead, I just drizzled some brown rice syrup over it. Turns out - probably not the best idea. The syrup melted too much when it baked, and when it came out of the oven, the whole top of the dish was kind of swimming in melted syrup. Bah. After it cooled, I tasted it and I couldn't really taste any of the banana layer. I stuck it in the fridge and tried it again the next day. Much better the next day! The omnis I served it to loved it. So I think it was a success. But don't make my lazy mistake - make the caramel sauce! It probably works better than brown rice syrup!  (lebkuchen)

Butterscotch pumpkin pudding
This has a little bit too much spice for me, which is weird because I usually like to over-season my food.  The texture is still more like pureed pumpkin instead of pudding too.  However, it tastes pretty good overall and I think I might throw it in the ice cream maker and see how that goes. Chocolate tapioca pudding
Super creamy and heavy chocolate taste. It was easy to make and was delicious. (intheend)

Horchata
I was not a fan of this at all. It was way too sweet and for me to say that, there is something wrong! It was also way too watery. I admit though that I am critical because I'm Mexican and know what good horchata tastes like. Next time I would just use rice milk, cinnamon, add sugar and blend it without adding the water. Joni's jubilee

Kahlua ice cream
This was good but it kind of had a bit of a 'fake' taste to it. I'm not sure why.. maybe because it was a tad too sweet? At any rate, it was still devoured but I wouldn't choose this over other ice cream recipes. (intheend)

OMG, I love this cookbook.  It's my current fav  :)

Peanut butter pancakes - These are AWESOME.  The batter came out really think but I didn't add any extra liquid because I wanted them to be dense.  Great PB flavor.  Two thumbs up!

Peanut butter muffins - Another winner.  I used chunky PB and the texture was great.  DH wolfed these down in one day!  I halved the recipe and then used the batter to make 4 big muffins instead of 6 regular ones.  Will definitely make again!

Smoky black bean soup - I liked this soup but think it could use a little tweaking.  Next time, I will add more veggies and cook longer.  The beans were still a little hard after 2 hours of cooking.  I used smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke, but the flavor definitely came through.

Those recipes sound really good, icephrosty. Thanks for the great reviews.

I recently made the Banana Barley Bars.

Peanut butter and chips granola - This did not turn out so well for me.  After the first 8 minuntes of baking, I went to stir it all around and it was already burnt.  I have an oven thermometer so temperature was not the problem.  I tried to pick some of the middle (non-burnt) pieces out and they tasted alright.  Not the greatest recipe IMHO.

I made this off of the website and it did not come out.  It just fell apart but it tasted ok.

Macadamia granola - This was good but I have a sweet tooth and had to add 2 Tbsp of syrup to get it where I like it. I also made it with walnuts since I didn't have macadamias.

Horchata - I was not a fan of this at all. It was way too sweet and for me to say that, there is something wrong! It was also way too watery. I admit though that I am critical because I'm Mexican and know what good horchata tastes like. Next time I would just use rice milk, cinnamon, add sugar and blend it without adding the water.

Buttermilk pancakes - My go to pancake recipe. These are just divine and very easy to make. However, they don't make a lot so make sure you double the recipe if you want good size pancakes.

Spicy Asian Macaroni Salad - This sounded really odd but when I made it everyone was talking about how good it was. Definitely give this a shot if you want to try a different type of salad.

Cinnamon bread - Loved this! It was really easy and fast to throw together.

Apple Sage Fauxsage - This was this the first thing I made when I bought the book and felt that this recipe was worth the purchase alone! It's perfectly seasoned and I loved the texture.

Maple and brown sugar cookies - These were just okay for me but I would make them again and maybe add some more sugar. It's always more sugar for me, lol.

Chili and cornbread pie - This was inedible. The cornbread topping was perfect but the smoked paprika is just too overwhelming.  I would recommend adding only about a tsp or even less. I would make it again with that revision though.

Red Jambalaya - This made a huge pot! My family and I ate some for days. It was very tasty though.

Meatloaf - My omni family and I enjoyed this immensely. However, it was a little dry on the inside so I think next time I would rehydrate the TVP with 2 cups of "beef" broth to see if that would help.

Mashed mustard potatoes - Liked these a lot but only used 2 tbsp of mustard instead of 3. I liked it better that way because you could still taste the mustard but it wasn't overwhelming.

Spelt loaf - I made this in my bread machine and was in love with the texture. It's light, airy, and delicious.

Cinnamon graham crackers - Used this to make a cheesecake and they came out perfect. It's a little labor intensive but completely worth the effort.

Pumpkin chocolate brownie cake - So good! This is one of my all time favorite pumpkin recipes. If you have a can sitting around, put it to good use and make this!

Carrot cake - This was well received with omnis. It was very dense but enjoyable. I only had 9 in cake pans to use and the two layers seemed too small so I would double it. If you don't have 9 in cake pans though then don't worry about it.

Chocolate chip cookie pie - I cannot even put into words how much I love this recipe!! It's like a gigantic chocolate chip cookie with gooey cream on top. Oh it was so good and very rich.

White pizza - Divine!! I'll stick with my own pizza dough next time.

Morrocan Spaghetti - Completely delicious.

Barley Chili is a thick, hearty, flavorful chili with lots of bulk from barley, black beans, chopped carrot, zucchini and onions.

Jam Filled Soda Rolls - These were pretty bland. They might have been better had there been something added in the dough like nuts or something. I've had many a better muffin.

Angel Food Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes - Total flop. The batter was liquid. I don't know what happened. I followed the recipe exactly. It could have been the weather (it's humid here right now) Just awful. I will try to make these again on a less humid day, but I was really disappointed :( Angel food used to be my favourite type of cake...

Strawberry Bundt Cake - I used store bought jam instead of making the strawberry reduction...which was a mistake. It was bland and gross. And a little gummy :\

i just spotted this book a couple weeks ago.. it's next up on my 'to buy' list, can't wait.. love the reviews so far :)

Crunchy carob almond granola - I used cocoa since I'm not a fan of granola and really liked this. It has been the best granola I've made at home.

Kahlua ice cream - This was good but it kind of had a bit of a 'fake' taste to it. I'm not sure why.. maybe because it was a tad too sweet? At any rate, it was still devoured but I wouldn't choose this over other ice cream recipes.

Buttermilk biscuits and gravy - Super yum! This was a nice change of pace. I added sausage crumbles because I couldn't help myself.

Lemony french cake - Why are you still reading? You should be making this!!!

Peanut butter pancakes - These didn't have a very strong taste of peanut butter and they kicked ass with some golden syrup poured on top.

Mexiquinoa - Made my own salsa for this and used it in this recipe. This was a great idea and was yummy status.

Mexican shepherd's pie - Freaking loved this!! I used the red seitan recipe from viva vegan and also used the red chile sauce from viva vegan. It was like a huge tamale pie.

TB & J shortbread - I added the optional lemon extract and it was a nice departure from something usually considered "normal." That wasn't widely agreed upon though as two people in my household didn't like it so next time I'll just leave it out.

Pumpkin bagels - Ugh, I wasted a can of pumpkin making these. They were just so plain and the texture was awful. It wasn't firm like other bagels I've made at home.

Cherry pistachio scoffins - I had such high hopes for these but unfortunately, they were just hopes. After being baked, these are extremely dry and bland. They ended up being thrown out.

Orange chipotle BBQ - So delicious! But it was too spicy for two members of my family so if you have problems with spiciness, knock the chipotle down to 1 tbsp and you should be fine.

Imitation bacon bits: Awesome.

Mexiquinoa: I'd never had quinoa before I made this, but I really liked it! I prepared it the day before to let the flavours meld together, and then we ate it cold with spicy chickpea burgers, guacamole and jalapeño-corn-gravy. Everyone enjoyed it, and we ate the leftovers for days.
