Vegan Brunch Recipes (by Isa Chandra Moskowitz)

Isa's latest book, Vegan Brunch, is now out!!!  She's posted several sample recipes on her site.  Here's a link to them:  http://www.theppk.com/vegan-brunch.html

Let the reviews commence!

Yowza, folks, I've got this in my hot little hands right now!!  I ordered less than 24 hrs ago from Amazon, and it's already here one day early (I have the Amazon Prime where you get "free" 2-day delivery, so I wasn't actually supposed to get it until tomorrow).  I'm looking through the book trying to figure out what to make first.  I'll post back soon with my first review.

yay!  i can't wait!  i looked at the link you posted and that scramble inspired me to make a similar lunch.. but with white beans instead of the tofu.. i used green & black olives, tomatoes, spinach, garlic, oregano, s&p & ny.. it was good!

Coffee Chip Muffins--These are quick and tasty.  The coffee flavor comes through nicely, but it isn't overpowering.  They're perfect either with a cup of coffee or a cold glass of nondairy milk.

Tempeh Sausage Pastry Puffs--These are really delicious!  They make a lovely presentation with the puff pastry.  They do take a bit of time to make with the tempeh needing to marinate for an hour; however, the results are worth it.  I baked these in my toaster oven in a couple batches and did reduce the baking time to 15-16 minutes.  These are a little different spin on the Baking Powder Biscuits and Tempeh Sausage Crumbles from Vegan with a Vengeance.

Navy Bean Gravy--Very tasty!  The fresh thyme is wonderful.  I didn't think any salt was needed with there being 3 T soy sauce in the gravy (and I used low-sodium soy sauce).  If you're sensitive to salt, you may even wish to reduce the soy sauce.  This is a little different spin on the White Bean and Tempeh Sausage Gravy from Vegan with a Vengeance.

Got mine in the mail two days ago and yeah...YUM. Just from reading through the recipes I think I may like this one even more than Vcon. I'm having a Memorial Day get together this weekend and will definitely be busting out some of these. High on my list right now: Chorizo Sausages, Poppyseed Pull apart Rolls, Beer-Battered Tofu, Avocado Potato Salad...and some others!

There are definitely a lot of recipes in here that are traditional "brunch" foods, like waffles, crepes, scrambles and hash browns, but I'm so loving how many of the recipes also make great light meals or potluck dishes for all times of the day and night. This one is in the running for "favorite cookbook purchase of 09", running neck-and-neck with Vegan Soul Kitchen.

East Coast Coffee Cake--Yum!  I made the jam swirl variation with blueberry jam.  This is a tasty, moist coffee cake.  There does seem to be a lot of flour in the topping, but it is delicious, nonetheless.

swiss chard frittata - delicious with the additions i made:  a little spinach since some of my chard was past it's prime, marinated & rinsed artichoke hearts, with sliced tomatoes and chopped teese cheddar on top.  i probably could have cooked or squeezed more of the water out so maybe thats why i had to bake it about 10 minutes longer to get it browned & it was a bit watery on the bottom but it was really tasty.  i kinda think it mightve been a little underwhelming without the added veggies, though.

I can only get one cookbook at the moment and it's between this one and Vegan Table....

I'm going to keep checking for reviews on both...

Bagels--Yay!  This was my first experience making bagels, and they turned out really well.  They've got that great bagel chewiness.  I'll definitely be making these regularly.

I am planning on making these over the weekend if I have time...how do you store them and how long do they last b4 drying out/getting stale? If I make them on Monday, will they be fresh the next day to transport to work?  :P

I'm torn about getting it.  Seem like a lot of breadyfloury//sugary type stuff like pancakes, waffles, muffins and stuff.

Tweety, there are a bunch of carby items, but there are some other, more savory, items as well, like scrambles, sausages, etc.  Here's a link to the flickr page of photos for the book:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/isachandra/sets/72157609812629355/

My bagels have been on the counter in a ziploc bag since I made them on Thursday.  They're still good and toast up just deliciously.

Its listed as using 'warm water' So, what temp is that? 110? I am sooo nervous about making yeast breads because I always seem to kill the yeast by accident and the dough doesn't rise..

"warm water" should feel neutral (not hold, not cold, just same temp) when you put a drop on your wrist. So I hear. I think yeast dies at 120-140 degrees F, though, so you've got a bit of a range.
