Baltimore/DC/The 'Burbs...

I know there are lots of us within a 2-hour drive of the DC metro area.  Anyone want to get together and eat or something?

Nov. 1st works for me.  I must admit that, as nice as a hike in Shenandoah sounds, cheeseless pizza wasn't really what I had envisioned for a vegweb meetup.  :-\  But if everyone's up for it, I'm game!

Yeah, I'd rather be able to eat in a vegan restaurant, but right now I'd just like to meet my online friends!  :)>>>

GreenT, do you not have a car?  Is it impossible for you to come east?  Just asking.  :bird: The little birdie wants to know.

I'm afraid Nov 1st doesn't work for me.  That's the closing night of my play.  But that's ok, I'll make it to the next one!  :)

I do have a car, and if meeting at veg restaurant in the DC area is more favorable, I'll travel for that- I was just throwing the 11/1 idea out there.  I live pretty close to the park, so if it would be better to have a potluck-type meeting after, we could do that as well.

Everyone should come!

Trueveggie - Do you like Yuan Fu better than The Vegetable Garden?  When I'm in Rockville I always think about Yuan Fu but end up back at the Vegetable Garden because it's so good.

Yes, I actually prefer Yuan Fu over Vegetable Garden ... based on the food alone.  Yuan Fu is a little smaller.  I have only been to Vegetable Garden twice, but Yuan Fu I return to everytime I'm in Rockville... (more than 7 times in the last year).

Has anyone been to the Stray Cat Cafe?  I've only read about it.  They are not 100% vegetarian, but their business is based on finding homes for stray cats.  http://www.thestraycatcafe.com/about.htm

Me either.  I've agreed to watch my niece and nephew that night, so my sister can attend a work Halloween party.

I am free Oct 18, 19, 26, Nov 2, 9, 15, 16 or 22nd.  If anyone wants to meet-up one of these dates in Arlington or DC email me:  my user name (at) yahoo

Ah crap, I also am out on the 1st. I am going to a Diwali party at an Indian club here in DC (which means I'll get another chance to wear my shalweer kameez or langhi!! I'm so psyched!!).

Hrm.

I don't think I'm the *most* central, but if people want to do a potluck, I'll gladly host (I have a house, with a pretty big dining room table, room for plenty). But I'm also really up for whatever, be it a restaurant, a hike, etc. My only thing is that I don't have a car, so if we do go out hiking, I'd love to metro out to carpool with someone if possible.

Hmm...sounds like more nays than yays so I guess 11/1 is out.  Maybe we could pick a date in '09 that we could all commit to for a potluck get-together like Sharway mentioned?

Hmm... I am having 3 surgeries between December and February '09, so I'd say the first quarter of the year is out for me.

Maybe let's go back to the idea of November... Nov 2nd or 15th, anyone?

These are both good dates for me.    ;)b

Maybe we could do the hike one of those days then a veggie restaurant meet-up the other day.  What does everyone want to do?

It's at the top of Blue Mountain- it's a great place with awesome views.

WARNING:  Mike & I will be in Obamamania overdrive that weekend.

Is Fox Meadow Vegan?

The only vegan winery I know of in Virginia is Mountain Cove Vineyards (closer to Charlottesville).

http://www.mountaincovevineyards.com/ourwines.html

I just sent an email to them to ask how they fine and clarify their wine.
Some vineyards use Isinglas, egg whites, milk, gelatin or even blood to fine and clarify their wines.

Is Fox Meadow Vegan?

It doesn't specifically call its wine vegan.  I knew some beer was made with isinglass, but never heard about wine not being vegan.  Damn!

Sorry to be the bearer!!    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegan_wine

Most CA and French wines contain or use animal products to "fine" or clarify their wine.
A majority of other wine makers decide to follow those two "traditional" processes.

The alternative is to fine with Bentonite clay, Kaolin mineral or use nothing.

The good news is that most of Italy uses Bentonite or no fining at all.  The exception in Italy is Rome and the Lazio region.  They use gelatin, egg whites or some other animal ingredients.  Spain and Argentina have been known to use blood in their wine, trying to combine their bull-fighting tradition with their wine-making.  There are also companies like Frey Organic wine that is certified vegan.  Not all Organic wines are vegan.

There are some lists online and also a company that will ship you vegan wines through the mail ... if legal in your state.  VA says Yes!

FWIW, Deep Creek Cellars near Mdvegan does not filter their wines. I met the owner of this vineyard once or twice and adore that place! And actually, it's a small world because he knows a friend of my dad's, who has a vineyard in California and also does not filter wines. (Unfiltered wines are still kind of rare in these parts, so I keep my ears open for this stuff. Plus, my family is big into wine, so I know some people in the biz.)

So it looks like trueveggie, veggydog, greenT, Mdvegan, and myself are in for the 2nd, and several of us for the 15th as well. The 2nd is Sunday next weekend. What are we in the mood to do for this first date? Is that a hike out in VA, or are we meeting up closer to the city for a potluck or restaurant? At this moment, the weather is supposed to be partly cloudy and high 63.

As I mentioned, I'd be interested in carpooling for the hike. Would someone be willing to pick me up at a metro station if I schlep out to VA?
