Big dinner/guest menus

This is a place to talk about what we've made for big/fancy/more effort/guest meals, or if we want ideas for a menu.

We had P's mom and P's coworker (Dan) and wife over last night, and I made a large meal! P wanted to impress Dan with a vegan fettuccine alfredo (and I think it did!). He at least much preferred it over the omni alfredo his (chef) son in law made him the week prior. I made:

Menu

asparagus twists with dipping sauce (AVK)
3 bean salad (AVK)
spinach and strawberry salad with balsamic vinaigrette (AFR with my own adaptations)
fettuccine alfredo with broccoli (AVK)
garlic herb bread (my own)
red velvet 2 layer cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and chocolate ganache (VTable with my own adap.)

beer, wine, ice water

that sounds great AC!

The last time I cooked for guests (aside from our old neighbours) I did a curry night....so maybe not that fancy, but still quite a bit off effort.

I made:
veggie pakora (traditional Indian recipe)
dhal (from vegweb)
mixed vegetable korma (Manjula's kitchen)
aloo paratha (vegan yumyum)
boiled rice
chocolate brownies (vegweb)

red wine, beer, water, juice.

How was your cookout?

It was great! Almost everything got eaten up (not as many showed as originally expected, but whatever). The cool slaw was definitely the most popular dish (understandably). I was a little bummed that no one but my mum and I had the bean burgers, though (wimpy omnivores). The weather was great that day, and I'm happy with how everything turned out. I forgot to take pictures though :p which i regret...

I think my latest celebration meal was the summer solstice, last month.

We had a  Mediterranean pasta dish with with fresh tomatoes, asparagus and loads of other goodies (Jimmy's)
a litha avocado salad (arugula,  avocado, red onions and balsamic vinegar) an adaptation of a recipe in an old cookbook
fresh bread (mine)
bejeweled green beans (fresh green beans cooked with garlic and herbs, white wine and vinegar) an adaptation of a recipe in an old cookbook
midsummer strawberry rhubarb pie (mine)
and a fresh summer sangria. (mine)

I made dinner tonight for my mom's birthday. I always forget to take a picture when I make a bigger meal! I will get a picture of the cake later.

jalapeno poppers from AVK (these came out super spicy...hot peppers!)
roasted corn and avocado salsa from AVK
pan grilled vegetables in chile lime beer from VV
version of Tex Mex taco salad with chipotle dressing from AVK with my own chorizo topping
served with tortilla chips and green salsa
coconut tres leches cake from VV

wow sounds super awesome!!

we had half a dozen of my husband's mates over on Saturday night, but not for dinner.  I only found out on Friday afternoon so didn't really have time to prepare things I would normally do.
I made:
garlic breadsticks
giant hugearse potato bread
roasted garlic dip
olive/lentil/corn/chilli dip
sundried tomato/white bean dip
margarita cupcakes
cinnamon bread

then we found out that my husband's sister got engaged so we invited her and her fiancée for dinner tonight .  As I don't get home from work till around 6:30pm, I prepared most of the dinner last night so we can actually eat before midnight

big pot of not-butter  not-chicken made with chicken o'greatness seitan
big pot of chana masala
big pot of vegetable korma made with cauliflower, carrot, onion, mushrooms and broccoli fresh from my garden
to be prep-ed tonight:
aloo paratha
rice

also, not in theme at all, but I'd already made them:
banana split cupcakes.

but those aren't proper 'big dinners'... I'll make sure I come back in here next time we have a bunch of people over for a meal

You are so silly! Those are very proper. You always amaze me with all the things you make!

Oww, you are freakin' amazing at big dinners! I don't get how you do it! You seem to find out kind of at the last minute that people are coming over and by the next day you've somehow managed to cook for a small vegan army.

and she has to cook like that on a daily basis for her large army of 1!

haha.  Maybe this is why I don't consider cooking for fewer than six people to be a big dinner for me...

I'll take photos of the curry feast tonight for you! : )
