Calling Midwestern VWers....cocktail question
OK, so when I went to college (1979-82) there was a cocktail in the college bars in Iowa called "Daddy, I Don't Want to Drink This." I can't remember what-all was in it, but I remember there were 4 ingredients, 2 of which were Triple Sec and blackberry brandy. I'm not sure but I think there was tequila in there somewhere. It was a deadly mix, but delicious. One was enough to party on...two would make you wobble all over the place and crash into stuff.
Does anyone remember it? I can't find it online, maybe a local barman made it up and it caught on. I can't honestly say I "recommend" it because as I say, it will lay you out for an autopsy, but I figured there are a lot of cocktail drinkin' peeps here and someone might know of it. Carrot Wench? Anybody?

I think I ran into it on the Hill at UNI, either there or at the Best Western bar just outside of Boone.
alright, no luck yet...but I've posted the question on facebook, directed to Iowans, UNI students/alum, and all alcohol aficionados.
If I don't hear anything within the next few days, I'm seriously considering sending an email to my old art history prof. He happens to have been around the area for a while, and he's kind of a party animal. ;D

yeah...no one knew there either. We had quite a discussion the other day about memories of cocktails. i remember when we went out for a dinner-and-drinks thing because our favourite GA had finished his degree. He asked the (very attractive) waitress, totally deadpan: "Do you have an Oral Fixation?" She never missed a beat, and shot back, "No, but you can have an Orgasm here."
HE was the one who blushed. All the women at the table cheered for the waitress. :-D
Well, I don't know about the name but there is a cocktail called a Polish Sidecar.
Here's the recipe from "Ultimate Bar Book: The Comprehensive Guide to Over 1,000 Cocktails" By Mittie Hellmich (via Google Books):
Lemon wedge
Superfine sugar
1 1/2 ounces Cognac (or brandy)
3/4 ounce Cointreau (or triple sec)
3/4 ounce blackberry brandy
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
Lemon twist
Rub the rim of a chilled cocktail glass with the lemon wedge and rim with sugar.
Shake the liquid ingredients vigorously with ice.
Strain into the prepared cocktail glass.
Twist the lemon peel over the top of the drink, and drop it in.
Is that anywhere close to what you remember?

1 1/2 oz. tequila
2 tbsp. grenadine
1 1/2 oz. triple sec
1 1/2 oz. blackberry brandy
4 oz. lemon mix
Shake with ice. Serve over ice in a tall glass.
might be called a Passing Out Potion after a few of these! ;)

Chelsea
1 ounce dry vermouth
3/4 ounce bourbon
1 teaspoon blackberry brandy
1/2 teaspoon Cointreau or triple sec
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 lemon twist
In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the vermouth, bourbon, blackberry brandy, Cointreau and lemon juice.
Shake well.
Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with the lemon twist.

I think lemon juice would be fine. Several bartending sites I've checked use the two interchangeably. (There is a product called "True Lemon" on amazon.com that some sites referred to as lemon mix, but it has lactose in it.)

For the 'lemon mix', it's just a sour mix. Lemons + simple syrup should do just fine.

Reviving the thread to ask if anyone thinks that Creme de Cassis would be a good sub for blackberry brandy, which we don't have here?
Yes, I asked on Y!Answers today, and got one smartass reply from someone who obviously hadn't read the question.
Here's another version that I found online, this sounds a lot like what I remember:
Cocktail Ingredients:
1. Blackberry Brandy - 1.5 oz.
2. Triple Sec - 1.5 oz.
3. Jose Cuervo Tequila - 1.5 oz.
4. Grenadine - 0.5 oz.
Cocktail Mixing Instructions:
Fill a metal mixing cup 1/2 way with ice. Pour in blackberry brandy first, triple sec second, and tequila third. Then add lemix. Pour grenadine over top. Mix at high speed approx. 10 seconds. Pour all contents into highball. Squeeze wedge of lemon over top before serving.

I am ok with like maybe an oz tops, but 4oz would be so way super sweet.... I don't know if i would want to live through that hangover.

I also notice the mention of "lemix" that isn't mentioned in the ingredients, I think they mean bar sour. And I think that's what the 4 oz is for.
Base I thought of you. We went shopping in this place that has a large liquor-and-mixer section and they had "cane syrup" (ie simple syrup) by the quart.
that actually sounds really good yabbit, i just had some blackberry brandy lastnight.... just a smidge to late.
I'm not into sweet drinks, so if a drink calls for grenadine I can almost be certain I won't like it.
