"proprietary" "Natural Flavors" in Quaker Simple Harvest Instant Oatmeal
In my newspaper last weekend, I got a sample of Quaker's Simple Harvest Instant Oatmeal, "Maple Brown Sugar with Pecans."
The ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS, WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED WHEAT, ROLLED BARLEY, WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED RYE, SUGAR, PECANS, WHOLE FLAXSEED, OAT FLOUR, NATURAL FLAVORS, SALT, MOLASSES.
CONTAINS WHEAT AND PECAN INGREDIENTS.
Kosher Status: Kosher Pareve
I was concerned about the "natural flavors," but gave it the benefit of the doubt just that once and tried it (rationalization: It was free and was gonna be thrown out if I didn't try it!). It was good! So I contacted the company to find out if "natural flavors" included animal products. Here's their response:

The exact composition of our Natural Flavors in Simple Harvest is considered proprietary. However, it may be helpful for you to know that many Quaker Instant Oatmeal products are Kosher certified and will be labeled with the letter U enclosed in a circle.
As per Kosher Guidelines, this circled U will be followed by the letter M if they contain ingredients derived from meat or a letter D if derived from dairy.

Nooooooo, it does not help me to know that some of their products are kosher. In fact I know this one is kosher. And I don't care if the composition is proprietary, I have a right to know if it's vegan.
So my question is--- am I amiss in thinking that she didn't answer my question? To my understanding, even though it's kosher pareve, it may still contain animal products. No?

I hate the "natural flavors" label on the ingrediants list. I never know what that is. As a result, I just try not to buy anything that has it on their label. I just wish companies could be more straight forward with us.

it's definitely pretty tasty! and relatively low sugar, too, plus there's 4g of protein per packet.

ugh, i know. i think i'll probably consider the avoidance of my question a reason to find another oatmeal. actually i usually just bring cold cereal to work for breakfast, but i thought this might be a nice change of pace. boy... they really pulled me in with the free sample! i guess that's the point. but it was good, and less processed than their other products.
i should take baypuppy's advice, but i bet ms. gina wouldn't care one bit. :(
