Review thread for magazine recipes?

Does anyone cook from magazines?  Or just blogs these days?

I cook from magazines a lot.

Not just VegNews and VT, but I also find good recipes in places like Food & Wine, Cook's Illustrated, Bon Appetit, Southern Living (every now and then).  One of my family's favorite recipes is a chickpea dish I heard about on NPR.

I was wondering if people thought it would be helpful to have a thread where they could give a shout out to non-cookbook recipes they've recently tried and liked.

For example, last night I made the Beer Battered Tempeh Fish n Chips recipe in VegNews and it was delish.  But I am not sure where on VegWeb I would share this information.

Many of the magazines have websites with unrestricted access to recipes and which allow readers can post comments or reviews on recipes.  I was thinking the purpose of a thread here wouldn't be so much to review the recipe as to flag it as something worth trying.

In my own experience I have found magazine recipes to be less reliable than cookbooks in terms of turning out a consistently good product, so I am not sure if it is a thread that should include "hey whatever you do don't make that" comments as well.  I've definitely had a lot of failures, but the successes more than makeup for them.

Is this something that would interest anyone?

Sounds neat! I don't ever cook from magazines, since I don't get any magazines. For some reason, I'm not very good at making recipes from blogs either. But! You know I love reviews.

Is this something you would like added to the blog review thread? To also include magazines? I'd be happy to do that, or whatever you want to do!

Hmmm. I don't know what would be best.  Also don't know how many vegwebbers actually use magazines either, although many seem to subscribe to VN and VT.

I was thinking more of a  "definitely worth trying" thread for recipes that people found worked well and wanted to recommend. Otherwise it might be too overwhelming.

Would be interested to see if others would be interested in reading such a thread and what they would find useful.

I'd be interested, anyway.

ha ha! AC you are a good soul.

I bet if we did one for VT and a separate one for VegNews, people would actually contribute even if there hasn't been a huge clamor of support.  Especially with VT, since the recipes are usually available online after a month or two. I haven't found the same sort of collection on VegNews, but maybe I just haven't looked in the right place.  The VT site allows for comments, but to me it's not the same as an endorsement from a Vegwebber I know.

For the format, I was thinking just positive recommendations.  I suppose if someone tried a recipe based on a recommendation and got a different result, it would be helpful to know that opinion.

I am just not sure about posting reviews of every "meh" recipe in these magazines.  Frankly I find a lot of them to be "meh."  So I am afraid that if we opened it up to everything, it would be overwhelming to keep up.  Of course, maybe no one will read or comment on the threads anyway, and then it will be easy!

DO IT

(but letting you know, I will post the online VT/VN recipe reviews in the blog recipe review list b/c that's where they currently are..if I know they are online, at least)

Okay, I will start but I do think the VegNews and VT recipes should have their own threads.  The blog recipe one is already so long. Plus, magazines are not blogs. A lot of the recipes are written by noted chefs/cookbook authors or are developed and tested by kitchen staff.

I would be willing to help keep them in order.

So I'm going to add some of my reviews now.

Ok! I was just referring to the recipes that are also on the VN and VT online sites (not really blogs, but that's where they fit for the cookbook challenge), and I thought that's what you meant.

I see your reviews for VT, but did you make the other thread(s)?

omg.  I totally forgot that we have the power to start new threads. All by ourselves!

when I sat down at the computer with a fistful of vegnews recipes I learned that none of them were available online. so I'm not sure what to do.

I get and cook from both VT and VW, maybe you could categorize them just by month so its not so overwhelming for the person updating? Then people could add inwhich ones they make, if they make them?
Most of the VT's are online, but lots of time the VN's are not.

Yes, I like this idea!

I made the Alfredo sauce from this month's VegNews and I've been looking for somewhere to sing its praises...
