Ok! my baby's b-day is coming up. Well its in AUG, I dont know what to make for her first b-day. I want to throw her a party but nothing to fancy or big. Since it'll only be a small amount of ppl. Family & Friends mostly. What should I make her a cake or cupcakes. I was thinking cupcakes. I dont know what kind of cupcakes to make for her party. Also no one at the party is gonna be vegan but me & my baby :-\. So all & any ideas are open. ;)b
There are some excellent recipes on this site, and I don't think you need tell people "oh these are vegan" unless they like back you into a corner with an icepick! Suffice if they are delicious, most people won't care or ask.
Or even notice.
Cupcakes are a good idea, as they are already "portioned" and you don't have to have a huge chunk of "bleeding" cake left over in the fridge (difficult to store). Especially if there will be little ones there...they like having their own "special" individual cakelets, and they can hold them by the paper "cup"--less messy too.
Cupcakes, a good fruit punch (make your own if poss), little mini sandwichy things or pizza rounds...sounds like a fun party.
I made these cupcakes the other day, and they were fantastic!!! I also make my own frosting, 2 Tbls earth balance, 2 Tbls vegan shortening, a crazy amount of powdered sugar, a splash of soymilk as you go along, and i added heaps of cocoa powder. By far the best frosting I've ever made. You could make a fruit salad, and mini English-muffin pizzas (they make veggie pepperoni somewhere...), a raw veggie plate w/ a vegan ranch dip... Cali needs to pop in on this one, I'm nowhere near her title of Menu Master Extraordinare. Hope that helps!! And your baby is adorable!

Aww a baby birthday! What a fun fun thing to plan for such an adorable girl. August is a hot month even in New York!
If its a small party with mostly adults then you can plan things you like for the most part. Pick a theme or a tone and go with it. Or pick a menu and that may dictate the tone or theme. You may want to do a BBQ or picnic idea even if its inside. Make potato salad, macaroni salad, veggie burgers, bbq seitan ribz (from fatfreevegan blog are my favorite!) and have a huge bowl of fruit salad.
If that is common place go exotic. Make it a fiesta with salsas, a variety of lime & chili sauted veggies, beans, tortillas and chocolate cupcakes with a hint of almonds. Make it cute with a Japanese bento type idea with summer rolls, spring rolls, sushi, edamame and vanilla cupcakes.
Now, if this party is going to have toddlers and young kids then pick fun things to make that kids like. Macaroni salad, The Pigs are Safe in the Barn recipe from here filled with the sausage recipe from Everyday Dish, Boca Chik'n nuggets, bananas and strawberry salad and a marbled cupcake with heaps of frosting.
If the kids are too young to be eating solid foods then be sure to plan around your adult's palettes rather than the kids! heh You can go fancy or simple, homey or exotic, rich or basic. Give us a head count and what kinds of foods people may like.
If you just want a cupcake recipe try out the Shmooed one Pinkerbell linked or hit up the library and check out Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. I highly recommend the cookbook. For a one year old I would make a basic cupcake, either chocolate or vanilla with a simple frosting. If you want to make strawberry cupcakes then puree the berries (or whatever you want to add). Not only will they be an adorable pink but nothing for little one to choke on.
(Can you tell my daughter is 15? I dont even remember what I fed her at 1! haha)
i love the idea of cupcakes. in eat, drink, and be vegan there is a recipe for strawberry frosting and it would be perfect on fluffy white cupcakes. for the main menu you could make a veggie pasta salad with fun shaped pasta, a fruit salad or fruit kabobs, an oil-vinegar based coleslaw (if you are nervous about serving a veganaise based recipe to non vegans) herb roasted potatoes, pita with hummus, falafel and fixings, a broccoli quiche, or even cornbread. just a few random ideas to throw in. but you have plenty of time to plan. i wish your adorable daughter a happy 1st birthday!
or if you dont mind having the party ealier in the day you could do a brunch! i love breakfast foods... plus, omnivores would enjoy it too.
blueberry or strawberry banana pancakes or waffles
breakfast potatoes
cinnamon rolls
fresh fruit salald
tempeh bacon or sausage patties
broccoli or spinach quiche
orange juice, apple juice, coffee
and birthday cupcakes!
I don't know much about children and their likes or dislikes. :-\ Cupcakes sound fun though, especially if you can get some natural food coloring and make fun tinted icing.
You daughter is the cutest baby ever!!!
Thank you , the food coloring thing sounds kinda cool . Thanks for that idea
Cali, you really must come over here and throw me a party! No, wait...I don't have enough friends...ah well. You are definitely the Queen of Party Nosh!

Thanks, I might do an elmo theme, my baby loves elmo. Thanks lots :)>>>
congratulations and happy birthday saani! i recommend vanilla cupcakes (basic) with some type of coloured frosting. Little coloured sprinkles or cupcake liners add an easy cute touch!
Thanks ;)b , I might do the sprinkles thing. If I can find a little elmo cookie to put in the middle of the her cupcake well all the cupcakes & a little elmo crown which i think i saw in toys r us. I'll be set. Thanks a lot :)>>>
