Sour Cream

OK, when I decided to become Vegan I knew that dairy would be a challenge for me. So far so good, I have realized that I can do without the cheese, with no problem but I really miss sour cream. Tacos and burritos just aren't the same. I have tried the Tofutti sour supreme better than sour cream stuff and it was well..... ok I guess, left a funny taste in my mouth, and I had to mix a very small amount with alot of other stuff for it to be decent. I know there are other brands and types out there, that a Whole Foods market might have, but the only one near me is a pain in the butt to get to. What I want to know from you people is tried and true brands that you REALLY enjoy, that would be worth the hassle of going to Whole Foods! Thanks

Cristina

Honestly, the Tofutti brand is the best one I've found so far.  I have a few recipes for homemade sourcream, but they are not that great..they all have that "taste".

What I don't understand is that it LOOKS like sour cream, it SMELLS like sour cream and the sour cream taste is there, you know the sourness that makes it sour cream, but its it's not strong enough and gets overpowered by that "taste" whatever it is!

you're not going to find anything that mocks sour cream exactly. i had to abstain from eating any sour cream, cause i didn't like it at first either. i went about a year without it and when i had tofutti again, i loved it.

i dont like the sour cream plain either.  whenever i get a tub of it, i mix in a packet of onion soup mix so its like chip dip, and just use that on everything i would use sour cream for.  onion sour cream in your mashed potatoes, burritos, tacos, whatever else... its still good!  yum.

also!  if you JUST went vegan, it might take you a while to kind of forget what the other things tasted like.  when i stopped eating meat, it took me 4 years to finally enjoy fake meat and tofu.  i forgot what animals tasted like, so anything even close to it started to taste really good.  its the same with fake cheese, sour cream, cream cheese and ice cream, atleast for me.

Yes I did just go Vegan, but I was very close to a vegetarian before that. I have always preferred veggies to meat using mushrooms and eggplant for my "burgers" etc. Meat alternatives are ok and I use them sometimes, but generally I can just do without any subs. I just left out the meat part of the recipe. But giving up dairy has proved to be a challenge, and I think you are right, it is going to take a while to forget what I was used to. My question is though I was so gung-ho about Veganism and I never gave dairy a second thought, as time goes on I find myself having to stave off those cravings for dairy, where as in the beginning I had no cravings at all. I don't particularly care for vegan cheeses, I've never eaten ice creams etc. Any suggestions on how to satisfy those cravings and keep me from falling off the wagon?

I just realized after visiting the tofutti website that there are actually 2 differnt kinds of sour cream. The  tofutti better than sour cream, and Tofutti sour supreme. I did notice that the Sour supreme contains partially hydrogenated soybean oil, whereas the better than sour cream contains non-hydrogenated. I know partially hydrogenated isn't good for me, but for as little as I use stuff with it, it isnt a problem. Most of you guys don't use anything with it, but I was wondering if anyone had tried the Sour Supreme, and if the taste differs any from the Better than Sour Cream. If there is no taste difference why add the fat to my diet, but if the taste is improved with it, I thought I might make a dip with it. It calls for sour cream and the Better than sour cream kind didn't work out so well.

Christina Dawn, I've used this Tofu Sour Cream recipe from this site:  http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=6985.0.  It's super easy to make and worked well for a spinach dip that I made.  I have used the Tofutti Sour Supreme (also says Better Than Sour Cream underneath), but I haven't tried the non-hydrogenated version.  I will say that I have used both the partially hydrogenated and the non-hydrogenated versions of the Tofutti cream cheese, and I don't notice much difference; therefore, I buy the non-hydrogenated.

Not sure if it's vegan... but it is non-dairy...
"IMO sour cream subsitute"
...and for the life of me since I moved from Los Angeles I can't seem to get my hands on some to even read the label to find out if it IS vegan or not. Anyone know? And anyone know why I can't find it anymore? I know lots of people who used it as their regular sour cream who were not vegan.
I'm not a fan of the Tofutti brand sour cream.

Jennifer, from what I am finding you are not the only one not being able to find it. Several ppl are looking lol. They say that it is readily available on the west coast but cannot find it since moving from there. The closest to an answer I can give you is I found it is made by Rod's Food Products of City of Industry,CA. Though after trying to look them up I was at yet another dead end. But one bit of good news, I don't know where you live, but most of my local grocery stores, Kroger, Whole Foods, Randalls, etc. are more than happy to special order your favorite items, and keep them stocked if it is a product you will be buying regularly. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

LOL I live in Germany!
I have means of special ordering items as well but I have to have the product UPC first. I hope they are still making it! Like I said, I don't even know for sure if it's vegan. Thanks for the info!

You might also consider playing tricks on your brain.  If you are missing sour cream on your baked potato, try pesto, chili, salsa, dressing, or another mock dairy product on the potato-- and then indulge in some mock-dairy that you DO like, such as a sorbet.  If you're missing it in dip, try vegan mayo and pureed soft tofu in place of it, and you'll hardly miss it.

I've misplaced the recipe, but on tacos and burritos I've found that I like tahini mixed with water and a spritz of lemon juice until it's saucy and creamy.  It's not the SAME, but it has richness, creamy mouthfeel, and all that jazz.

Good luck!

An update: after trying a couple "homemade sour creams" I have decided I LOVE tofutti. I found if I make my Spanish rice, and mix it with refried beans, salsa, diced onion and tomato, I can add like HUGE amounts of "sourcream" and LOVE it. I take a tortilla fill it with lettuce, roll it and then spoon the bean/rice mixture on each bite. I no longer feel as though I am missing out.  For all the women's out there, certain times of the month call upon cravings that are usually easy to ignore. For some it's chocolate, sweets and such, others it is fried greasy "comfort foods" for me it has always been sour cream, cream cheese, etc. TRUST ME, I found ways to put sour cream on pancakes and not get looked at weird! I am sort of afraid to become pregnant LOL!
