Soy Milk

Hi Everyone!
OK! So as some of you may know I am trying really hard to kick the dairy habit! Today I got my first carton of Silk. I bought the plain version because I figured it would taste most like milk. So I tried it--and it's not bad--I can defintely see using it for cereal or with baking--but I did not care for the taste enough to be able to drink it alone. I think I pinpointed the problem though--it tastes too thick for me. I am used to drinking fat free milk which is very thin. So here is my question--can I thin down the Silk using water? Any suggestions?
Capture
I forgot--I got my first pint of chocolate Toffutti and I love it!!!
You could mix it with rice milk?
I'm assuming watering it down to your liking would be fine. After all, isn't soymilk made from soybeans soaked in water?
The Soy Delicious ice cream is pretty good too. Neapolitan is my favorite but chocolate fudge is a close second!
I just want to say becareful of the tofutti cutie ones if you ever try them. Your going to be addicted to them. :D
try buying the Light Silk...that's probably thinner.
Vanilla soy milk is delicious! Especially on cereal :)
the light silk is thinner, definitely alot more like skim.
My life is complete without drinking soy milk by the glass. I use unsweetened in my cereal. I can't stand it otherwsie.
Rice milk! In cereal it's better' than dairy, in chocholate mik it's exactly the same taste. In coffee it's too thin but the best substitute I have tried.
Thanks for all the help guys! I'll have to try rice milk--it sounds like it is thinner then the Silk. In order to salvage what i have I am going to try to add water to it and see what happens!
capture, i thought you were vegan?
hmmm..
well i use silk all the time. light silk would be like skim in the dairy free category, but i've never tried the rice milk yet, since it has barely any protein.

No--I'm not vegan yet--I just love cheese so much--I know it's such a weak argument--but for me cheese is like the best part of every meal! I have cut way back but it's still in a lot of stuff that I eat. I do attempt to eat as vegan as I can, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. I have cut out eggs pretty completly and now I'm working on milk, ice cream, ect. but untill they make a convincing feta, bleu cheese--well, I'm sorry my good vegan friends--it just isn't happening! *please dont shun me*

Err. We share nemeses. My biggest vice...my friends and I go to a pizza place each Thursday, and for YEARS, the veggie pizza that they've conceded to is Red pepper and feta. Why is it so freakin good!?
Oh, and I have gone through much therapy over bleu cheese. Haha.
Vanilla rice milk is also excellent on cereal....ok I see a pattern here... ::)
Hey, Capture. If you don't like using silk on cereal or for drinking straight, you can use the rest of it up by cooking and baking with it. There are plenty of recipes on VegWeb that call for soy milk.
I still eat dairy (like you, I'm a CHEESE JUNKIE!), but I drink and use only soy milk (Silk Unsweetened). The only time that I drink dairy milk now is on the rare occasion that I buy coffee at work. For some reason, they don't have soy milk in the cafeteria. When I go to Starbarf, I always get soy....
The taste wan't too bad--I think I'll just have to train my tastebuds to like it. I can defintely see using it in cereal--I just didn't like to drink it straight. I once read somewhere that it takes 3 weeks for your taste buds to aclimate to a new taste--like if your switching from whole milk to skim milk--so hopefully I'll jsut get used to it!
Thanks for all the support ladies! I really appriciate it! Maybe we cheese addicts should start a club "CA" ;D

Do you think vanilla soy milk would be good in mashed potatoes? I used fat free soy milk in them last week and I didn't like the taste at all. I usually use regular skim milk but am trying to cut down on dairy.
I never liked to drink a glass of milk (other than chocolate) so my concern is not finding a great tasting one to drink. Just one for cereal, mashed potatoes etc.
The fat free one I bought is just fine in smoothies
I do however love 'So Good' chocolate milk. I find 'Silk' chocolate milk too rich.
I have never tried vanilla soy milk before. Maybe I would like it. I will have to buy some.

CHEESE JUNKIE here too!

Haha. Starbarf. Can I steal that for my personal use?

I've never used vanilla soy milk in non-sweet recipes like mashed potatoes, but I have used unsweetened soy milk. It's ok in mashed potatoes. If I'm making vegan mashed potatoes, I prefer to use a veggie broth instead...and may add garlic, onions, peppers and mushrooms. Yum!

lol! Sure! I started calling it that when I was working there during grad school. :D
