tomato sauce-less and cheeseless pizza ideas

I'm searching for the perfect pizza sauce that is NOT tomato based.  I've tried a few of the recipes on this site - the Thai ones and the amazing carmelized redpepper and onion one - and have been disappointed.
I like the carmelized idea (thinking Amy's  cheeseless pizza)  but have yet to find one that satisfies.  Lots of flavor is a good thing. :P

Any ideas???

thanks!

Thanks for the ideas:)  Maybe I do just need to do some tweeking to the carmelized onion recipe I used - adding the thyme sounds yummy.  When you use carmelized onions for your "sauce" do you run it through the food processor or blender or just add it all chunky?

My bf loved the Thai pizza btw.  I really liked it too, I just couldn't wait for the sauce to set up to start eating it! :o :o

What about pesto? To me, pesto is always super-flavorful, with all the herbs and whatnot. (There are plenty of recipes for vegan pesto on here. Then you could play around with adding veggies--perhaps some mushrooms, or grilled peppers/eggplant?

I was going to suggest pesto as well!  i think it's great on pizza, or pasta...

You could also try an alfredo sauce, maybe with mushrooms and spinach...  there are lots of ways to make it cheese/dairy free if you need.

I personally love bbq "chicken" pizza - bbq sauce for the base, chik'n strips or some baked tofu, green onions and some cheese.....yum yum.

And another vote for pesto...I will take a pizza with pesto over one with tomato sauce any day.

I sometimes use refried beans instead of sauce and turn it into Mexican pizza with roasted green chiles, onions, black olives, salsa verde.....

Yumbles! Sounds great.

Pesto, aioli made with soymilk instead of egg, salsa brava, heavily flavoured "white sauce", sauce vert (based around parsley and garlic), walnut sauce, vegan alfredo...any non-tomato pasta sauce.

ETA: There's a pizza place here that does a kind of creamed spinach pizza with black olives that is just too much! Make the Creamy Rice and Spinach Casserole but just the creamed spinach part, no rice. Top your crust with that, a good droozle of olive oil, some walnuts etc. to taste. I think oyster mushrooms would be good...and lots of garlic.

I always use Dragonfly's Uncheese sauce as a pizza sauce. It's dynamite!

Hummus veggie pizza! Use hummus to replace tomato sauce and top with veggies. The bbq and mexican pizzas are also really good.

Pumpkin sauce!  I do it all the time.  Pureed pumpkin (I use fresh, but canned is probably fine too), with garlic, oregano or sage, and black pepper.  Or whatever spices you want.

Pesto is great too, and BBQ, and...all the other ideas really.  :)

I used to make salad pizza loooong ago when i worked at a pizza place and got sick of the same tomato sauce/cheese pizza (this was back when i was still a cheese eater).  I would bake the crust with some cheese on it - you could use your favorite meltable veg mozzarella. then when it came out id spread some mayo (veganaise now) and top with lettuce, tomato, black olives, mushrooms etc.  ive seen some restuarants that will add bacon bits too.

for easier eating without losing all the toppings i started just cutting the mini pizza into 4 pieces and putting them together like a warm sandwich.

thanks for this thread btw!  everyones been giving so many great ideas, i cant wait to try some!

A guy I dated very briefly in college created something like this as a sandwich that eventually hit the local pizza pit's menu after he special ordered it a jillion times. Used one of those big buns.  Of course he had a slice of ham on it, but fakin bakin would work better.

they're yummy!  and i really like the warm chewy pizza crust as an alternative to a sandwich made with bread slices or a bun.
