too much nutritional yeast....?

okay so for some reason in my five years of vegan-ness I hadn't ever tried any nutritional recipes.....until yesterday....lol.
and omg...I had the best grilled un-cheese in the world....im hooked.

but, my question is...on some website I saw something that said that having more than 3 tbl of it a day is bad for you. It does something or another to your bloodstream and like puts strain on your kidneys.....something like that.
has anyone else heard of this? is it true?

I do not know...but I think that Patrick and I overloaded ourselves on NY months ago(b/c of those sandwiches..), and we are very sensitive to it now. I don't know if we were before..and didn't know it, or if having too much caused it..but our GI tracts become distressed with small amounts of it. It's sad...

I have heard of belly upset from it too.
but as far as a warning/danger... maybe from being fortified w/ lots of nutrients? I kknow that B12 isnt dangerous at high levels tho, u just pee it out. U will have neon pee tho.

FYI. if you have any yeast issues or mold issues, stay away from the nutritional yeast. Can cause an overload in the body and lots of health issues.  When there is an overgrowth of yeast in the body, it can cause a breakdown of your immune system, creating other allergies along the way.  This is coming from someone who has been there, done that. With a yeast overload in the body, it created sensitivities to mold, mushrooms, bread and anything else with yeast in it. Now, on probiotics, I am working to rebuild my immune system and with NAET, am working to overcome the allergies.
My suggestion would be to go easy with the NY.  For me, the yeast caused Migraines almost everyday for the past several years, until we discovered what caused them.
One other thing, when you have a yeast overgrowth, it caused you to "crave" sweets and more yeast. A viscious cycle.

crsymes, I believe the yeast that grows in the body and causes the symptoms you mentioned is Candida Albicans.  Nutritional yeast is totally different, although it may have its own side effects if eaten in excess, like AC and  LA mentioned about digestive issues.  Luckily, I have not experienced any negative side effects of NY. Thank goodness, because I love it.

I am interested in finding out about problems with too must NY...pancake, where did you read that info?

Looking at the bag, I can see the only things that might go over:
1/4C (4T) = 640% Thiamine
and this info from another site:
Thiamin (vitamin B1) is a water-soluble vitamin and as such, it is least likely to reach toxic levels. There is little danger of thiamin toxicity when it is taken orally. However, there is an exception. When thiamin is taken intravenously (injections), it has been reported to cause anaphylactic shock in few people. Symptoms of a thiamine overdose may include a feeling of warmth, weakness, sweating, nausea, restlessness, difficulty breathing, tightness of the throat, bluish colored skin, and death.

I don't thinkone would get an overdose by regular foods and a normal vitamin, but yes, it is the kidneys that have to get rid of water soluable vitamin overdoses, so they would have to work to do that.  Where did the recipe come from?  I've never made a toasted cheese sandwich with it.  If it's online please give the link, or if in a book, you can just give me the name of the book.  It's not on my package back.

Yes, it the problem with the old thinking, 'if a little is good, a lot is better'!  NOT!  Balance is the way to go :)

I think anything is dangerous when  you consume too much.  Remember that girl who died drinking water for a contest by some radio station?  :o

Wasn't she trying to win a Wii? Dang, I hate the Wii. I mean, I love mine... but too much of a good thing is BAD! And I hear too much about the Wii.

I doubt you are going to gettoo much, to  toxic levels via your food or a cheez recipe. Like IVT said, its water soluable, so once youve absorbed enough b vitamins, your pee will be bright yellow, as it is coming out of your system.

But everyone is diffferent, some pple can eat lots of things and not have tummy issues, others cannot.

It makes me puke, but I love the stuff.  My husband also puked the 1st time he tried a recipe I made that had nutritional yeast in it.  :-\

I eat a ton, and the only side effect I've noticed is that my sweat smells a little yeasty. Gross, huh? I'm not actually sure its even from the NY, but I think so.

No offense to those who like NY, but I think its the devil. I LOVE the stuff but it gives me major issues. From what I've read on this site, stomach issues are fairly common with NY.

For what its worth:

I love the stuff, but I get loose stools EVERYTIME I eat it. Doesnt matter in what...sprinkled on soups, in mac n cheeze, spreads, whatever.

I sincerely hope your mileage varies!
