Anybody ever try a truffle? If you did what did it taste like?
And where did you get them? (the kind of stores)
I just want to try a truffle once see what the raves are all about.

Hmmmm, I've had Mushroom truffle paste, and that was pretty good! It was from Murrays in NY :)

Indescribable amazingness. I used to waitress at a fine dining place and we had a couple of dishes w/ them. They all had meat though so the chef gave me acouple of slices so I understand the taste. Truffle oil is also quite nice as a finishing touch to dishes.

I buy black truffles at Christmas to make my amazing brown-rice-and-mushroom "stuffing". It's a fixture. The truffles I get are tiny, in jars, and about 10 grammes costs about $10. Senseless I know, but it's once a year. The true king of truffles is apparently the white. Senatore Agnelli, the founder of Ferrari, used to slice them up on his SALAD for lunch...but then he was an Italian prince as well as one of the world's first sportscar millonaires. And he lived in one of the producing areas, too.

The taste is kind of like a mushroom only more so...a dark, rich, nutty woodsy flavour. Hard to describe. A truffle is not a mushroom; it's a parasite that grows underground on the root systems of oak trees. Because they're underground, they are hunted out using dogs or pigs to find them. They look like dirty rocks when found, and in France it is a criminal offense to "doctor" your truffles with dirt; they must be clean when they enter the truffle market or you are banned.

Fungi like tree ears etc. are also parasitical growths, anything that lives on another living "thing" is a parasite. But they are nice to eat. What I always wonder is who was the first person who pried a sea urchin off a rock and decided "Oh, it's spiny and poisonous--but I think I'll EAT it!" ;D ;D
