TVP sweet?

Has anyone else noticed an underlying sweet sort of taste to reconstituted TVP? I made the awesome garbanzo tacos on this site the other night and decided tonite to make them with TVP to compare...ugh! :P I had to really doctor the seasoning, it tasted like I had left something out, or whatever, and the underlying "sweet" note was really noticeable. Finally in desperation I added a spoonful of nutritional yeast and a dollop of commercial tomato sauce. Is it just me, or have others noticed this with TVP as well?
BTW--I think I'll just stick with garbanzos and black beans for my Mexican food in future...

I did a search on TVP, as a new Vegetarian, I was hoping for better news on the taste. I'm still hopeful though.  I belong to a group on Yahoo called vegetarian_group. They are very excited about using TVP maybe you can get some tips. I got a reference to here from there, thought I'd return the favor. Cheers, Paco

You're probably better off steering clear of the TVP, and sticking with garbanzos and black beans.  TVP is so processed and is extracted using harmful chemicals and is essentially, "the guts" of the soy bean.  After soy protein isolates, soybean oil, and any other commercially useful soy by-product has been stripped from the nutrional whole soybean, you are left with the junk, i.e. the tvp.  It's a useful way of passing on the trash to vegans and vegetarians without any real nutritional profile.  A whole protein source is better for you and therefore more digestible making the proteins more readily accessible for your body.  So, although some may want to pack as much soy into one's diest as possible, too much of a good thing, well,  is no good... so stick to what you know better, a whole bean!  In my opinion, much more delicious and satisfying than ground up, solid... who knows...

i sometimes like to use lentils as a substitute in many dishes... i find that i can cook lentils in my rice cooker and just add a little less water than what  i would use for the rice...

I have never noticed a sweetness with tvp but I would definitely stick with the beans..they are just plain better.

I love me some beans. :)>>> :)>>> :)>>>

I haven't eaten TVP in so long I almost do not remember what it tastes like!  When I did try it the underlying chemical / preservative flavor got to me.  Perhaps that is also messing with your tacos.  :(

I don't like TVP either.  Can't say I remember it being sweet...the texture was just too gross for me.  I tossed the bag of it out.

it kind of smells like dog food when it's reconstituted. maybe it was your seasoning?

Yes Pip, it does! I think we've just discovered what kibble is made of, mostly.

I knew better than to buy more, which I just did. They sell it in my Asian store in weird shapes...cutlets, "meatballs" etc. I bought some "meatballs." I know I'm gonna hate it. I'm gonna have to go all Ethiopian on it.

I haven't used tvp in a good while. The taste/texture are OKAY, but nothing to write home about. I can't say that I recall an underlying sweet taste though
