Hiya, Vegwebbers!

With the helpful backing/suggesting from the Diva Club, I made this thread as a place where we can all discuss various modes of birth control and/or safe sex. Even as an animal-rights kinda place, I know lots of us are concerned about cruelty-free and/or natural lifestyles...So if you're not a fan of cow-exploiting, skin-scorching latex rubbers, or of the way hormonal b/c pills screw with your body and mind, HERE is where we can all help each other.

This can be a place for advice or general information on various methods/devices...like If you want to know what hormones in your pills are doing what, and how that will affect you, etc.; or if you want to know about materials used in different kinds of condoms (and which aren't vegan!); or just how effective such methods are statistically...HERE is where you can tell what you know, or find other reference sources. HERE we can help each other learn what works best for each of us in regards to our own needs/situation.
Sound fun? HELLS YES.

let's go!

i did it! i'm a winner! yesterday i made an appointment at the clinic place, and today i went in. the lady gave me portia because i said i have really bad cramps (i do..but she asked me to put it on a pain scale thing, and i never know what to say to those..like what is ten? i said 8 because all i can do is curl up in the fetal position with a heating pad until it stops) im a little nervous. she said to start taking the pills sunday. so. eek. eeeeek. nervous.

I got my IUD!

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting AT ALL.  I mean, it hurt and I wouldn't recommend it for a girls night out or anything, but no screaming, crying, or chest pounding occurred.

I'm so glad it worked out good!! I've had mine for a month and I'm loving it. The insertion definitely was not terrible. When she was all finished, I was like "Oh, is it in already???" haha.

P.S. And it's great for spontaneous sex too! hehehe You don't have to worry about carrying around a condom anymore.

hehe, sponatenous sex...

lol at "wouldn't recommend it for a girls night out or anything"

when i got mine put in my uterus was kind of like "wtf are you doing to me?!" during the procedure but calmed down later (it surrendered). i'm still waiting for the reputed torrential period from hell... it's not happening.

and i was all excited about being able to join the Diva club too.

I have had my IUD for 5 weeks now. I started my period on Saturday and it's been super heavy and all that jazz, but the problem I have is: today when I was going to the bathroom, I noticed my IUD string coming out of my vagina. Once I got off the toilet, the string went back up inside, but it is still really close to the opening. I'm kind of scared. I'm not sure if this is normal or not and I cannot call the advice nurse until the morning. Has this happened to anyone else???

How far out would you say it came? If it was just a little tip, then I'd say don't worry about it.

The only way to see if the IUD has moved at all is to reach up and gently tug on the strings. If it feels like something is "sliding" then you may need to go in and get another one. The first month to three are more prone to ejections due to uterine spasms (ie cramps).

I went to the gynecologist today and my nurse practitioner told me that nothing was wrong. Since I've only had the IUD a month, she said the strings just haven't had the chance to coil up and so they seem a bit long. She felt up in my vagina, and I guess everything was fine. WHEW!!

I was so scared.

I might be joining the IUD club! I went to the doctor this morning for my regular exam & asked her if she thought the pill was really the best option for me anymore & she recommeneded an IUD. She gave me a booklet to look through. The name brand is Mirena. I have to see if my insurance will cover it.

How exciting!! I have the copper IUD (which lasts 10 years/no hormones at all), the Mirena lasts five years and does have hormones, but my nurse practitioner said the hormones were only equivalent to 2 pills of "the pill". Either one are really a good option! I hope everything works out good!

They say that an IUD is a much cheaper birth control method in the long run. Initially, it costs quite a bit (with my consultation, insertion, the actual IUD, and the check up mine was about $350), but if it lasts 5 years (or 10 if you get the copper) it is much cheaper than the pill/other methods.

Has anyone tried / heard anything about the Lea's Shield?

http://www.leasshield.com/

I'm sort of interested, but the website doesn't seem all that informative.  Plus I'm not sure if it's even available outside the USA.

I'm also still thinking about a copper IUD or FAM...so many options. *sigh* It would be nice if I could find a doctor that I actually like and trust enough to talk about these things.

*Raising this thread from the dead!*

I'm really thinking about getting an IUD now. The Mirena is what my doctor suggested.... I was iffy about it but a friend of mine on the pill recently had a blood clot that went into her lung & almost killed her. Scary, scary stuff. The pill didn't nessasarily CAUSE the blood clot, but it doesn't increase the chances of getting one.

I would be going from 10+ years on Ortho to the Mirena. So questions I have, How much did the IUD hurt? How wacky was your period after insertion? What are the strings like that hang from it? do they get in the way during sex? Any problems with using the diva cup with the IUD? Any other side effects? like mood swings, weight gain, pimples?

I know nothing about IUD's, but I'm too scared to switch birth control due to

i started taking portia about a month ago (less than that--i started the white pills yesterday). hopefully my periods will be better and also more predictable (the lady said they'd always start on tuesdays), since what really drove me to make the appointment at the clinic was being immobilized by cramps and missing a bazillion classes and a speech.

before starting i was super super super scared about the side effects like weight gain, pimples, dying, moodiness (which i already have issues with), and decreased sex drive. but! aside from being a little crazy (can't tell if it's the normal moody stuff or because of the pills) and a few zits on my back, i havent really experienced anything bad. aaand there has been no decrease in sex drive.  ^-^ ive probably just jinxed it and next month im gonna get incredibly fat and all the zits haha *knocks on wood*

also i realize that could be a pun, but i do not intend it that way. i intend it the superstitious way, pervs :p

oh wait. the pills im on are a higher dose of hormones (lady gave them to me because of bad cramps) so there are lower dose pills out there that probably have less scary side effects. AND the portia's only 20 dollars a month because it's a generic. doooo it meggs.  ;)b  ..i used a lot of parentheses in this post..

ah..
i set my cell phone alarm for 10:33 pm. and then i remember. there was only one time it was weird, and that was when i went to a friends show at someone else's house. i had to sneakily take the card out of my back pocket, sneakily remove a pill, and sneakily take it with a glass of water. a guy there looked at me weird, so i gave him the glare and then knifed him.

no i didnt. i just like to pretend im badass.

no i dont. im just being silly. (:

You're hilar.
I esp like the 10:33, multiple "sneakily"s, knifed, and basass parts. And yes, you are part badass. We all are.

Even if I set an alarm (which, FTR, my life is run by "reminders" on my phone) I'll be at someone's house and my pills would be at home, or something of that nature. Meh.

i have an aversion to real times. my alarm this morning was for 6:57, and a reminder to call someone else about finals was set for 7:03.  hm. maybe if i had more friends and like..places to be, i would forget the pills. but the only place i ever really go is jbb's house. that is where the pills are. i used to keep them in my purse.
now i should study for chemistry.

Seriously, nerds can be hot. A lot of one's hotness is personality, imo.
