Oh no! i hurt him!! Need advice...HAPPY UPDATE

So, something embarrassing happened...I hurt my boyfriend's tongue...I have not kissed very many people before in my life and I know I'm not really great at kissing but...well so now I know I'm really bad. So...we were kinda sucking on one another's tongues and I sucked too hard...one time he pulled back and told me so I tried to be more gentle...but last night we were kissing and he said he was having a hard time with it cause his tongue was hurt from the day before. He showed me under his tongue and where it connects to the floor of his mouth, it was all red and- swollen! OMG. I felt terrible. I still keep thinking about it today. He told me not to worry about it and that he still loves kissing me. And playfully suggested that we should "practice every chance we get" ::)
Its almost like I cant tell how hard I am sucking or something? I don't know...When i went to bed I practiced sucking on my finger, to see if I could do it real gentle...but...I'm not sure what to do. I wonder if this has ever happened to anyone else before? I'm pretty embarrassed. I love him sooo much I hate to think of hurting him. Any kissing tips? :-*
Kiss without sucking the tongue! Just kiss on the lips, suck on the lips, move the tongue around...whatever. Just keep yourself from sucking on the tongue!
Think of sucking a runny smoothie through a straw. That is about the hardest you can suck a tongue safely.... Not that I haven't learned this through experience.... *looks up in the air whistling* ::)
hanashi, thats a good description i can imagine...lol...I read something on "instructables" today and they said to imagine like you are eating soft serve icecream...I don't think I have had soft serve icecream in years and years and years...and years...lol...I don't know if they have vegan soft serve and I really don't remember the sensation of what it was like to lick that...haha...okay...i can try that...
Ill also try not sucking the tongue, allychristine. He did it to me and I really liked it so I figured id return the favor but...haha, apparently no bueno! :-\

UPDATE!
So guys, kissing is going better...lol. thank you all for the advice. The sucking on a smoothie thing really helped. ;)b We both like tongue sucking, apparently (when its not done to injure ::) ) So i guess we will keep it up. Allthough his temporary injury did cause me to try other things a little more...IE the ear...and that was fun too. Still keeping the tongue sucking to a minimum though to avoid irritating it.

He asked me to marry him!!!!! And I said yes
We have not told the friends and family yet, so don't mention it on my Faceboook yet!!! I guess you could say its unofficial! Although we are planning to do it late summer/early fall...
