Dallas, TX help!

Hi Babies,

I have to go to Dallas for FIVE DAYS on business. I'll be staying in the downtown/historical district. Please, can anyone steer me towards things I can actually eat? I can't eat every single meal at Spiral Diner...

Love,
MA

aw, are you calling us babies?! thats cute! lol

Cosmic Cafe is absolutely wonderful! It's a vegetarian Indian restuarant in the Oak Lawn area with plenty of vegan options, and the cooks are more than willing to alter a dish to make it vegan. Be sure to try their chai tea! Delicious. You can get directions and see their menu at http://www.cosmiccafedallas.com/index.asp

If you can get there, Kalachandji's is my absolute favorite vegetarian restuarant in the DFW area. It's in a part of East Dallas not too far from downtown... near Fair Park if you know where that is. The restaurant located inside a Hare Krishna temple, and they have an amazing buffet and salad bar based on whatever is fresh that day. All of the cooking is done based on the Hindu principle of ahimsa, and each item is marked as either vegan or vegetarian. Their outdoor patio is beautiful. I feel completely at peace when I visit them. Their website is http://www.kalachandjis.com/

If these options don't suit you or you're looking for some additional choices, one of our local news stations recently did a contest in which viewers could vote on their favorite DFW vegetarian venues. WFAA's website is a good resource with listings and user reviews of all the restaurants that were nominated. http://alist.wfaa.com/a-list/great-meals/vegetarian

Hope you have fun while you're in town! Let us know what restaurants you end up trying and how you like them. :)

Oooo, I just found this post.  Thanks for the great info Newshoes!  I only knew of Spiral Dinner and Comic Cafe.  There is one place that the WFAA didn't mention.  I haven't been, but my co-worker says its great Indian food.

Oh! Too cool! I used to love eating at Madras Pavillion when I lived in Austin; I had no idea we had one in the DFW area. Thanks so much for sharing. It's a little bit far away from me, but I'm definitely going to have to make the drive sometime soon to try it out.

I figured I would just tack onto this thread instead of starting a new one.  I'm going to be in Fort Worth soon for business.  I would gladly eat at the Sprial Diner every day (judging by the menu), but they aren't open on Sunday evenings or Mondays.  So, any suggestions for Fort Worth instead of Dallas?  Is Fort Worth pedestrian friendly?  If so, places within walking distance of the Sheraton would be appreciated.  But I'll take a cab if it's worth the trip.  :)

Hmmm... I'm not so familiar with the Fort Worth area to be honest. I do know that the downtown area is definitely pedestrian friendly. I have heard great things about the accessibility of the T (Fort Worth's bus service), and I've done lots of walking around the museum district. I would highly suggest checking out the cafe in the Modern Art Museum if you get a chance... http://www.thecafemodern.com/ The menu is built on locally-grown produce and chock full of vegetarian and vegan options... not to mention the food is delicious! Also check out the Botanical Gardens if you get the opportunity. They are absolutely BEAUTIFUL this time of year. Maybe you could pack a picnic lunch?

Wish I could be of more help with the restaurants, but I tend to hang out more in the Dallas area than I do Forth Worth. Hope you have a safe trip, and have fun!

So, I ate at the Spiral Diner (Fort Worth) a couple of times this past week.  The first time, I went with friends.  I had the Ate Layer Burrito and I didn't love it.  The second time, I was alone, having a bad day and starving, and I got the El Paso Burger with potato salad.  It was soooooo good (and very messy to eat).  And just to drown my sorrows completely, I had a pina colada milkshake, which kicked ass.  The servers were very friendly.

They have a little store in the front with vegan supplies and I was able to buy a VegNews magazine to read while I dined.  This place must be a godsend for vegans/vegetarians who live in a city known for its stockyards.  I was really thrilled to see how popular it was.  There were people of all ages and types (to judge by looking at them) eating there.

BTW, if you're staying in the downtown area, it's probably not such a good idea to walk to this place.  There's kind of a sketchy/semi-deserted/boarded up section of town (and a dark underpass below the highway) between the college-ish area where Spiral is and downtown.  I have to say, though, that the people we did run across during our walk were very friendly and all said hello to us.  When I went by myself, I got the hotel van to take me.

I didn't have much time for sight-seeing, NewShoes, but the Fort Worth Water Gardens were right across from my hotel.  They were pretty cool.

Oh, it certainly is a godsend! Spiral has been my favorite restaurant since long before I stopped eating meat and dairy, but now I have a whole new appreciation for the place. I was just there yesterday for lunch with my family. Maybe we crossed paths! :)

I just wanted to add for anyone else who finds this thread in the future - obviously NewShoes hit on the big ones, but there are a few more good places to eat in Dallas:

We have an awesome little gourmet raw food restaurant on Greenville: http://blissrawcafe.com/

Totally vegan Chinese http://www.theveggiegarden.com/ (in the suburbs) and Korean http://www.newstartveggiegarden.com/Site/Welcome.html (far West Dallas) - both have a reasonably priced buffet.

Crooked Tree coffeehouse http://www.crookedtreecoffeehouse.com/ in uptown has vegan baked goods (including the elusive cinnamon roll). They come from a vegan bakery with no storefront but you can also find their stuff at the Green Spot by White Rock Lake http://www.whiterocklocalmarket.com/index.html.

This Thai place in Addison is omnivorous but has a serious vegan menu too: http://www.bestthaidining.com/Addison.html (scroll all the way to the bottom).

We now have a ginormous Whole Foods across from Northpark Mall http://wholefoodsmarket.com/storesbeta/parklane/ with a raw bar (that has kombucha on tap!) and a build-your-own cupcake bar that always has vegan options, in addition to the normal WF prepared foods.

If you want to eat something really unique, we've got an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant, where most everything on the veg section of the menu seems to be vegan - just get the vegetarian sampler, it's awesome.http://veganeatsdallas.blogspot.com/2009/04/review-dallul.html

DFW is so much more veg-friendly than you would ever guess - it's awesome!

Yay! I'm so glad you had fun and found good food. I totally would have loved to have met up with you while you were in town (especially at Spiral Diner!), but I've been completely slammed with finals the past couple weeks. I feel like a zombie. I can't wait to catch up on my sleep this weekend. Rainy days = Naptime!!!

I really wanna try that place! I've heard fabulous things about it from friends. Thanks for the reminder. It's on my list.  ;)b

Wow... I've spent so much time at Crooked Tree this semester! I love that place! My favorite barista is Donna Lee; she makes the BEST soy lattes. Everyone there is incredibly friendly, although it's often times hard to find a seat (it's packed with SMU kids during exam season). I definitely second Lauuren's recommendation!
