Restaurant phobia.....

Everytime a friend or family member asks me to go to a restaurant with them, I don't want to go. I know that theres not going to be much that I can eat in a restaurant and I would much rather make my own food at home. The problem is that before I became a vegetarian ( I lean more towards being a vegan now, as I can't have dairy and very rarly have eggs) I use to eat out with friends and family almost every day. I think they want the old me back, but I do't want to ever go back to  my old way of eating ( just the thought of it makes me sick). I also don't want to lose the people that are in my life, but I know they are all getting frustrated with me. Any advice? What do you guys do in situations like this?

When you go to restaurants, ask for a copy of the ingredients. Tell them you have wicked dairy allergies. It's fun.

I've thought about doing that, but never actually have. I'll have to do that next time XD AND EGG ALLERGIES. wait. can you be allergic to eggs? lol

Why not?  People are allergic to everything these days.  They WILL give you a copy of ingredients.  For example, Chili's doesn't use real butter, but does use Hydrogenated oil fake butter.  Or something.  It was a while ago.

Then, like AC told me, Papa John's "garlic butter sauce" isn't made from animal anything.  Many things that are made of "beef" are really soy (not that I'd completely trust it, but it's interesting to look at).

Hah, i love how random things are vegan or meatless at least
Once on one of my adventures digging through the school freezer to read ingredients (haha, ffa kids have access to all) I found hot pocket type things with SOY MEAT! Crazy. But it was only a tiny box on the top shelf so, i still have no trust for cafeteria food. Though at my middle school (when i also found a way to dig through the freezer), they had FAKE CHEESE pizzas! I dont remember if it was just lactose free, but i remember clearly "Cheese subsitute pizza" on the box.

Yes.  Whenever I try to explain to the waitress that I'm a vegan meaning there's a lot I cannot eat I play the allergy card.  Many restaurants have a chart of all the meals with all the common food allergies it contains.

Restaurants are suppose to cater to your needs.  Sometimes asking to combine side dishes can turn into a pretty fantastic meal.  Be creative.  Bring your own spices, sauces etc. to spice up a few side dishes if you suspect there won't be much food for you to eat.

Jack in the Box's tacos say beef but then they say "textured vegetable protein" and "imitation beef extract".  I think a lot of chain fast food restaurants use soy because it's cheaper.

You guys are so funny!

It's so true about restarants not knowing what a vegan or vegetarian eats. I have to second the comments on restaurants thinking its okay to eat chicken broth if you're a veg*n. On the menu at this restaurant I went to, they have a vegetarian part and all the dishes in this part come with rice and refired beans. But when I asked the waitress if the rice is made with chicken broth, she said yes. What's up with that?! How can they have the rice made with the chicken broth on the vegetarian menu? It just doesn't make sense. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I guess they just aren't that educated about things like that, which is okay but can be frustrating.

Alright... I'm gonna stop ranting!  :)

"no"

* "so, fish then"

"no"

grrrrrr. but you're right NR, they don't know. Then they get to know you (not like, restaurant peeps, but like, acquaintances, and they are all proud when they realize things like "oooh that has milk- you can't have that, right?!" hahaha

It is so true! But it is nice when they do finally know and it makes it easier and less embarrassing to ask things about the food. They already know what you can and cannot eat and they won't keep asking you questions like, "Well how can you stop eating that?" and "Why don't you eat that?" I get so embarrassed and shy when people ask those things because when I'm explaining why I feel like I'm preaching to them. I just want them to know the facts though... Oh well. What can ya do?  :)
