You are here

being vegan in India

I'm watching "Andrew Zimmer in Delhi" and they're showing how .. much of the milk in India is dervied from local farmers that have maybe 1 cow, and they milk the cow and then sell the milk to various locals.  Traditionally in India, the cow is revered and considered sacred.

So, i have to wonder out loud (not necessarily thinking there's any one "right" answer - just thinking this is an interesting situation to post for others)... if i was ever to travel to India (by the blessing of Kali) and was offered any type of "dairy" based dish - while at the same time knowing the dairy was purchased from a local farmer - would i still be inclined to refuse based on my perceptions/attempts at following a vegan lifestyle.

There's a separate issue worth mentioning,which I'd like to mention and then put aside, if at least for the sake of conversation only. If I was in a different country and culture - it could perhaps be seen as very offensive if i was not to accept whatever was offered.  That is something that would need to be taken into consideration in it's own right but ...i'm going to put that aside for the sake of this thread, because i want to focus more on the content of the dairy source and how it would relate to consuming dairy that was derived in a manner that is compassionate of the animal - and less of the social customs.

yes, you're correct.  Under normal circumstances - i would *never* post anyone's PM.  However, there was nothing private about that PM that was sent to me.  It was basically saying "stop attacking me or i'll report you".  Incidentally, it was by one of the very same people that had issues with me talking about "feelings" (if you would) instead of the actual topic.

I think it's a little bit sneaky to send me a PM just to threaten to report me.  We're not three years old reporting the child to the teacher.  If someone has objections about the method in which i (or anyone, for that matter) communicate - i would encourage them to take whatever action they deem necessary.  Although i haven't been pure and innocent on this thread, i stand by the stance that none of my posts/words/etc were without just cause.

I would have respected AC had she PM'd me something along the lines of "look - this has gotten out of hand, why don't we call a forum truce and just let the issues stand in the past".  But she didn't, she PM'd me only for the purpose of stating how she's going to report me.  There's no purpose in PM'ing me for that and i thought it was important to share this behavior because i have quite a few posters hammering me - while ignoring the actions of the "Elite Guard".  Like i said, we need to stand behind our words and actions.

sirdidymus, you are way out of line.  Posting a private message and all the name calling you have done is really wrong.

Look at the trend:

--> rationalizes drinking milk
--> rationalizes publicizing a private message

like omGOSH!  here's lubmiller - totally skipping over anything questionable that anyone else might have said or did but taking the time to comment on little ole me  8) like that's never happened ... since ... well ok - since like the last two times or so that you did that on this thread.

Look at the trend:

--> rationalizes drinking milk

rationalizes? rationALIZES?  RATIONALIZES?  Ok, this has ~nothing~ to do with the thread.  You accusing me of rationalizing is nothing short - why why why, it's nothing short of a personal attack (yeah, that's the ticket, a personal attack, mmm hmm, that's the ticket)...

If you don't stop making personal attacks against me, while I'll....I'll...*sniff* i'll AM you...err - i mean FM you...*ugh* dang you... i'll PM you ... I'll PM you about how i'm going to threaten to report you *again* to the admin mod and tell you how i hope that you're banned from this board.

And then, after I act like that - i'll, well - i'll be really... no I mean *really* upset if you speak up for yourself.  i  hate when people do that - it makes me look bad.

last, but not least - i'll then post how i'm done with this thread and post how i'm not going to post anymore and then i'm going to post...one more time...about how i'm going to ignore your posts....until i post again...

(funny how tasting one's own medicine never tastes as good to oneself as it does when it's dished out to others....who knew!!)

Sirdidymus37 -  Thanks for the thread, I've never thought about being in this situation, and it's enlightening to discuss it and to consider what my choices would be in that situation. At this point, however, it's probably best to move on. It doesn't seem like your going to get many more responses on the original subject.

this is awesome.  I'm glad for any constructive thought processes that might have emanated from this subject matter.

So what is everyone trying to prove here?  I think this is just going in a circle, nothing productive is occurring.  I'm all for healthy discussions but I think this is going nowhere, this was an interesting topic to me but its lost its value now.  A lot of what im seeing is people just getting upset, in a non-productive way.   People are getting bothered about who is right and wrong when really it isnt about that.  We are all on site for one reason or another, as for myself I'm on it because I like to learn, in general.

This thread has neither upset me nor has it enlightened me because there has been more straying of the topic then there has been on it.  I suppose my reason for responding to this is simply because, as I said in my earlier sentence, I'm a little confused as to what we are attempting to accomplish from this thread.

Word. I think we should all let it go.

Hey Kennedy,

thank you for the sincere post.

You know, i hear what you're saying - and i can only, of course - speak for myself.  While I regret that the thread took such a "twilight zone" type turn, I think that communication can be as important as the subject being communicated.  So, it's just one of those things that seems to snowball/escalates as many people start to contribute to the same. There were many people that contributed to the same, myself included - of course.  It's just one of those dynamics that just, happens - sometimes - i suppose.

I actually do think the conversation has it's merits.  I'll forego my reasoning for that (unless requested) but for now, suffice to say - i don't believe that everything was in vain, if albeit - having it's many varied aspects of immaturity, for which i certainly played my part as well.

In regards to the original purpose for starting this thread, there was - quite honestly, nothing i was trying to accomplish. I was simply watching Andrew Zimmern in India and he was in someone's house that offered him some products that contained yogurt and ghee (clarified butter, in case anyone isn't familiar w/the same) and i thought the question would be interesting to toss around on the forum - really was as simple as that.
