natalie portman not vegan anymore?

http://omg.yahoo.com/blogs/thefamous/natalie-portman-gives-up-veganism/1043

Stupid, she says stuff about having to really watch your nutrients, and then says it was to eat stuff from a bakery. :^ (my daughter insists on adding a smiley anytime I type)

I was just about to re-post this story, too....
Aggh. I know I shouldn't care what other people do with their personal lives, but dammit... Natalie Portman was one of those influential celebrity veg figureheads who showed people that with veganism, You can also look great and be healthy. It's just sad that she'd be so morally compelled to exclude animal products two years ago but then let pregnancy cravings overshadow all of that.

"I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of thing."

Oh yeah, right. "Listening to my body" is one of those lame excuses people use when they're simply responding to a taste craving. Like you really needed to fill your body with pastries laced with pain and sorrow.  >:(

I used lower-case "y"s because I just lost respect for her.

yeah pretty sad :( i'm sure she has enough money to have her own damn private vegan baker. i would say she should have been watching her nutrients when she was apparently eating nothing but carrots and almonds for black swan....

I just read this too and that is sad...I'm not vegan yet but we do not consume eggs and only use soymilk (we're down to just cheese). Usually those kind of cravings are related to some kind of vitamin or mineral your body needs, NOT the taste of the food. Using that as an excuse to eat pastries with eggs and milk is just plain silly. Like she couldn't have had SO many yummy vegan pastries, especially living somewhere upscale and fancy! Jeepers...

Like I said in the other thread.... I'm not judging her decision to switch to vegetarianism (esp since I'm just a vegetarian), but her reasoning is just plain bullshit.  I am mad for the vegans that really liked her.

And exactly what is; "and that sort of thing."  Is she secretly eating pork rinds too??  I don't see how you can promote something so avidly and then just back slide.  I get the whole pregnancy craving thing... trust me (I've been knocked up for 37 damn weeks now)!  I just paid closer attention to the nutrients I was taking in through a whole foods diet (sans eggs and very little dairy).  I do eat VEGAN bakery type items.... I think they taste better.  Completely giving in to what you are craving isn't smart though.... If I had I would have gained even more weight than I already have.

i would say she should have been watching her nutrients when she was apparently eating nothing but carrots and almonds for black swan....

Nice burn hespy!

I agree with all you ladies.  I wrote this in response to this article being linked in the Aimless Chitchat thread:

Wellllll...  At least she's not proclaiming her undying love for all things meat like so many ex-vegans seem to.  I'm happy she's at least vegetarian & isn't perpetuating the myth that pregnant women need to eat flesh to meet their protein requirements.  Maybe she'll go back to being vegan someday.

This part bugged me, though:

"If you're not eating eggs, then you can't have cookies or cake from regular bakeries, which can become a problem when that's all you want to eat," she laughed.

Pfff.  You're a goddamn millionaire with access to whatever foods you want, Natalie.  I'm pretty sure if I can manage to scrounge up vegan baked goods in Minnesota (either in my own kitchen or from a local bakery), she can manage in New York City or Los Angeles or wherever she lives.

I read an article last year that said she ate eggs every once in a while, so I've never considered her vegan anyway....
if I want a cookie, I make my fat ass a cookie!  stop being such a lazy bitch, Natalie!

I love how she said that if you're pregnant and vegan you have to make sure you get the proper ingredients... she eats cookies and cake.

I thought the same thing, HH!  Just stupid contradictory non-excuse excuses.

;D, Erin!

Laura just weighed in about this on Vegansaurus:  http://vegansaurus.com/post/4530956435/natalie-portman-please-stop-talking-about-your-diet

Hilarious, as usual, and spot on.  :)>>>

Yep!

But hell, she doesn't even have to do it herself. She makes enough to hire someone.

I need to learn to NOT read the comments on any mainstream website that "reports" on anything vegan-related.  I don't like to think of myself as a negative person, but holy shit - the ignorance & stupidity of (so many) people astounds me.

I was just on this funny celeb gossip site that I read (don't judge me), and there was a post about Natalie not being vegan anymore.  Against my better judgment, I went to the Comments section, and OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.  So much vegan hate.  It just makes me sad.  One woman even said that she works in pediatrics & thinks it's "morally reprehensible & akin to child abuse" for pregnant women to not eat meat.

Normally I just let this stuff roll off my back, but these comments were filled with so much hate & judgment...  Sad.

*sigh*

I don't really care. Does that make me a bad vegan?

Yes.  You're out of the club.  You need to care about how every celeb eats.

Nice knowing ya!

And...scene.

I'm so fucking sick of the "is she or isn't she" by this point that I'd like to punch her in her skinny face. As a vegan, she HAS to understand the public relations nightmare we all deal with on a daily basis. So why in the hell would she turn around and do this to us? She lives in LA, and I have to guess there might be a vegan bakery or 2 there. I don't know, just guessing. Why do all these rich celebrities think it's so fucking hard, and then there are all of us VWers who are A) poor B) lazy or C) live in the middle of nowhere and WE can all make it work? Does money rot your brain?

We probably read the same thing. I was just like, really? I am sure everyone on that website commenting is super healthy and their kids eat 8 fruits and vegetables every day. Omnis all turn into fucking nutritionists when they hear the word vegan.

LOL, exactly, VR!

Oh, and all vegans are either "pale and skinny" or "pale and fat as hell."  I mean, make up your minds!  Are we "too fat from eating pasta all the time" (quote) or "too skinny from inadequate protein" (quote)?  Because OBVIOUSLY all vegans are the same & we're either all this or all that.  We're not a diverse group of people like any other demographic.

DUH.

This kind of shit makes my blood boil.
....I've been working on NOT letting people's stupid bullshit get me so worked up, on NOT overreacting to things I can't even change or influence...but god. dammit. When medical "professionals" perpetuate the ignorance about SAD-eating or the vegan diet, I get super pissed. When a "doctor" says something that affirms a cruel and unhealthy lifestyle, the average person is that much less likely to learn or accept the truth.

And then when supposedly veg*n celebrities/figureheads go and spout the same kind of bullshit (like "my body really needs this buttery, chicken-period-filled donut"), it further drives home the belief that veganism is unhealthy or not satisfying.

And ditto to the above 2 comments!

I'm going to bake some frickin' cookies right now, dammit.... but I don't have any butter or eggs!! Oh how will I ever manage this task?
