what food do you miss the most?

I'm sure this has already been addressed in some other post, but there are WAY to many to look through.  I was wondering, since becoming vegan, which food do you miss the most from your preveggie days?  And please don't say, "I don't miss anything" or something to that effect.  I personally miss cheddar cheese.  Can't say that i miss anything else as much, seems everything else i can find suitable replacement for, but have not found a good replacement for the cheese.  No I have not tried Diaya (sp?) yet, can't find it anywhere near where I live, and not a fan of buying just 1 or 2 items on line.

p.s.  Just out of curiosity, why do some spell vegan, veg*n?

Biscotti
Puttenesca Sauce
Seafood
Really cheesy things
Corned Beef

Oh well!

I tried Corned Beef once and thought it was disgusting so thank God... I do miss Cheetos... There are vegan recipes but they seem involved and I am too lazy so I just eat other yummy chips...

Seafood kinda but they have a ton of vegan alternatives if you can't find them (maybe try an Asian market in the frozen section) google vegan meat and check out May Wah (sp?) and Vege Cyber (sp?) for an awesome selection but crazy shipping prices (depending where you live)

I don't have vegan seafood anywhere near more nor an asian market. :(

Have you ever tried Tings before? They taste a lot like the crispier Cheetos. My non-vegan friend tried them and became obsessed with them.

Is it really food everybody misses so much or is it more not offending people you care about by saying "Sorry, I don't eat that..." or not getting crazy looks when you order food without "cheese, cream, butter, etc..." ?

Just the food... I don't give a shit for the most part about being different... I think: Hey I am "cooler" and way ahead of the game... Ya'll will be copying me soon once you become enlightened :)

It's really food I miss. I don't really care what people think about me nor do I see not wanting something from someone I care about as offending them. If I made a cake and my friend said, "No thanks, I don't eat cake" it wouldn't offend me a bit.

Minke: I heartily recommend the 'fake fried fish' from this site... this is my favorite 'seafood-esque' thing I've tried so far. I hardly ever fry ANYTHING; when I do, it's either falafel or this... here's my 'comfort food' plan, for times when I once would have reached towards seafood:

Tartar sauce: Nayonaise or Vegenaise, chopped dill pickles, chopped red onions, pickle juice, red wine vinegar, Old Bay seasoning -- tinker til it tastes like you want it.

Marinade for 1 block of tofu (NOT silken): red wine vinegar, Bragg's liquid aminos (or soy sauce), juice from 1/2 lemon, & a sprinkling of Old Bay, on general principal

Tempura batter: flour, baking powder, salt, Old Bay (of course!), paprika, & ice water (just enough that it's liquid enough to dip cutlets/ not drip off after)

Extras: good bread/ hoagie rolls, brushed w/ Earth Balance & lightly toasted; cabbage slaw made w/ Nayonaise & plenty of cider vinegar/ caraway seeds; spicy grilled/ baked potatoes; grilled corn; etc... whatever sides sound good.

Secret ingredient: Nori sheets, trimmed to match tofu cutlets. Now, the magic is ready to happen!

Mix tempura batter; heat oil for frying; stick one mini-nori-sheet on each marinated tofu cutlet, like yummy little postage stamps; dip in tempura, fry til golden on each side, & serve like a 'fried fish' sandwich meal.... SERIOUSLY yum! It even fools my resident obligate carnivore... the cat begs for scraps just like he would for actual fish! (...you'll never even miss that mercury seasoning...) ;-)

^Omg, thank you SO much, I have to try that!^

Is there a certain brand that sells non-silken tofu? I think the only thing they sell near me is silken tofu. Whenever I go back to the co-op (if ever :P), I'll have to see if they have it.

Look in the fridge section, near produce, in big supermarkets; or in health food stores, it's usually near the vegan cheez/ tempeh/ seitan. I think what I have right now is 'nasoya' brand, but I'm not sure... buy organic (in the US) if you want to avoid GMOs.  :-)

I have seen them at Publix in my part of FL.

I am the same way but then get grossed out about the thought of eating cheese.  It doesn't smell good to me anymore.

my friends always seem so confused when i say that i really want deep fried cheese curds or something.  "but you don't eat cheese!"  i have no problem admitting when i crave things and certainly don't feel guilty about it.  doesn't mean i want it enough to eat it though. the thing is,  i would be deluding myself if i thought some non-veg food things could be replicated, and i can't really fault myself for having those flavors in my memory.

Deep fried cheese curds? Is that something real or did you make that up?

ha!  it's real for sure.  absolutely every bar in wisconsin serves them, usually beer battered.  used to be that every now and then someone from illinois or something would come into the restaurant i worked at and ask "what are cheese curds?"  being from wisconsin, that question sounds like, "what is food?"  from what i understand cheese curds are usually just bizarre fair food everywhere else in the u.s.

Haha.  I am from Minnesota, and we know what deep-fried cheese curds are...  They are the stars of our State Fair, in fact.  Even when I LOVED cheese, I hated those things.  So much grease!  :o

Oh goodness! I miss a good salami sandwich on sourdough, chicken kiev, an amazing bowl of my Mom's beef stew.

But I think now I just miss the idea of it more than actually actually missing it.  :)

There's vegan chicken kiev. I've never tried the vegan versions myself but if you would like I can try to find you some of the recipes. Now I want some :)

Oh that would be lovely! Thank you! The vegan version is good though? I just tried my hand at vegan cheddar cheese and was surprised it was pretty dang close to the real thing.
