what food do you miss the most?

I'm sure this has already been addressed in some other post, but there are WAY to many to look through.  I was wondering, since becoming vegan, which food do you miss the most from your preveggie days?  And please don't say, "I don't miss anything" or something to that effect.  I personally miss cheddar cheese.  Can't say that i miss anything else as much, seems everything else i can find suitable replacement for, but have not found a good replacement for the cheese.  No I have not tried Diaya (sp?) yet, can't find it anywhere near where I live, and not a fan of buying just 1 or 2 items on line.

p.s.  Just out of curiosity, why do some spell vegan, veg*n?

veg*n is the term for people that are mostly vegan, I think.

I miss cheese dip at mexican restaurants!

i always thought veg*n was a way of abbreviating 'vegan & vegetarian' .. thats how i always used it.

foodwise - i used to like 100 grand bars and reeces pieces, but even as a vegetarian i ate them only a couple times a year, if that so i dont really feel like im missing out on them too much.  sorry, im really trying to think super hard of what i miss and im not coming up with much.  theres stuff like angel food cake that i would enjoy if a vegan version was available but it's not something im missing on a regular basis.  i used to miss cold stone creamerys cake batter ice cream but now lulas has cake batter softserve and it's heavenly.

I really really miss sushi.

Random, I know. I never cared that much for meat or cheese or even eggs for that matter, but raw tuna? I seriously dream about it.

for me, it would have to be salmon.  I used to eat salmon 2 to 3 times a week, loved LOVED it. Still miss it to, but not as bad as the cheese.

I miss gluten in some instances. I went vegan and didn't even think about what I was "giving  up" when it comes to food, but my God there are times I could commit a crime to have a Guinness and not a gluten reaction aftewards!!

great question...

i would say that i can replicate almost everything that i love.  the things that i can't replicate... i miss.  but i don't mind doing it.  it's a small price to pay.

that being said... here is my list:
bacon
any kind of seafood (crablegs... lord how i love them)
good cheeses (like blue cheese, gouda)

i think almost everything else can be replaced with something equally as tasty.

I've found that getting vegetarian rolls really hits the spot. And there's a recipe for spicy tempeh rolls in Veganomicon that's awesome. Spicy Tuna was my favorite! Fun fact: sushi was the last meat I ever ate.

anyway, for me... I miss processed nacho cheese. It's hard to be at the movies or the ballpark and not want to get nachos smothered in jalapenos

funny you say that, i just picked up emergency veggie rolls last night... mmm. the good thing about veggie sushi is you can buy it from questionable grocery store carts at midnight without wondering if this sushi will be your last. And i have veganomicon! that recipie just always sort of intimidated me.

runny processed cheese lava is probably the grossest thing i can possibly imagine, haha. no offence. then again i dont think ive ever even tried it. Maybe you could just get the nachos and jalapenos sans cheese-food?

my last meat ever was disgusting undercooked chicken. blehhh.

I miss pizza hardcore.  Like, I eat pizza every so often from a vegan friendly place I visit or I'll eat regular pizza with no cheese, but it seems like nothing comes close to a greasy layer of real cheese.  Om nom.

I also miss cheesecake, bacon, peking chicken from leeann chins, and tuna noodle casserole that my dad used to make all the time.  *sigh*

Yeah, it's just a shortened version that could mean vegan or vegetarian...

I agree "veg*n" is shorthand for "vegetarian and vegan".

I miss cheese, especially mozzerella.  I miss pizza the most.  Cheese omlettes I miss too.

I've given up for the most part trying to replicate what I miss.  However, I did recently try Dayia cheese, and it's o.k. but it only makes me miss the real thing, so I probably won't get it again, or very rarely.

There is a KILLER recipe for pizza in Vegan With A Vengeance. Seriously hits the spot!!!!

But I've been vegetarian for so long that I don't miss meat, and I know that I will NEVER eat it again. It's weird to see people have cravings for meat still... it's been 14 years for me, and I don't miss it at all.

p.s. processed, runny, nacho cheese would probably taste vile to me, but in my head it tastes delicious!

processed cheese would never have appealed to me even pre-vegan, but I think that's my non-americanness.
I didn't like meat/fish even as a child when I was made to eat it, and the thought of it makes me feel ill now.
I've never had non-vegetarian sushi and raw fish is about the most disgusting thing I could think of putting in my mouth.
I make homemade pizza all the time, so. much. better. than the fast food crap.

but to not offend the original poster by claiming to miss nothing...

I miss having options when eating with family, and I miss not offending my mother by refusing her baking/cooking.

I used to really miss cheese, but now I don't.  I really can't think of anything that I miss now.  I do miss being able to walk into any restaurant and eat.  I miss looking at a menu and decided what I wanted instead of what I could have.  I miss the spontaneity of leaving for the day without planning where and what I'm going to eat.  I miss not dreading dinner parties, potlucks, and being invited to people's homes for dinner.  I miss not having to frequently defend my meal choices.  My friends are used to me eating differently now, but it is still a pain.  It's totally worth it, but I miss the ease of a "normal" diet at times.

I'm sorry, but I don't miss anything. I am a big girl, and if I truly missed something and pined for it, I'd eat it. I'm not vegan to impress anybody else, I'm vegan for myself. And the party that would be let down and disappointed if I missed something and ate it would be me. I'm not upholding this ideal for image, and I don't miss anything about the old way that I ate. I can only imagine the stomachache that would ensue if I were to even consider eating any of that crap. I'm more than happy with the way I eat.

I agree with Ibarte and oww that the lifestyle that went with the old diet was easier, but obviously the vegan lifestyle is worth it, or else I wouldn't do it (as I'm sure they would say, too). Every day is worth it, planning ahead is worth it, taking my own food to potlucks is worth it. A little inconvenience on our part pays out 1000 times for the animals and even for ourselves down the road.

What makes it even better is that we're touching other people in our lives. I've loaned out cookbooks, printed out recipes, baked for other people, and they are cutting out meat, dairy, or processed foods. We're starting other people down the path. If we sit and talk about foods we miss, we're sending the wrong message. The point is to move on with our lives, grow, and never look back with regret. We're all so lucky to have the knowledge we do and to be on the path we are.

I agree 110%! Going vegan is seriously one of the best decisions I've made in my life so far. I find very little to be inconvienent...yes, of course there is always the matter of going out to eat (which isn't even very healthy anyways...) and family dinners with the omnis (but they are becoming far more considerate...plus I get to cook/bake which I love doing). But it's worth it. I know I'm going good to myself, the animals, and the world by being the way I am. I don't think about what I miss, because I don't miss anything...veganism is so...fulfilling :)

I strongly disagree with that. I personally would never go back to the way I used to eat either and I'm 100% happy with the choices I make (Like you, if I woke up tomorrow and REALLY wanted a steak, I would eat it). Saying you miss a certain food doesn't make you a vegan for the sake of "Image", nor does it make you a "Bad Example". I'm glad you don't miss anything, but don't start throwing judgement around at other people because they miss the way nacho cheese tastes.

Jeez.
