NVR: For the knitters out there...

So, since becoming vegan, I've become felting-deprived. I used to make bags, hats, bowls, etc. out of felted wool yarn; however, I have yet to find vegan alternatives suitable for felting--are there any, or do I need to find a new knitting outlet?

I picked up a crochet needle for the first time today. I'm making this mesh shopping bag. If anyone is interested in learning to crochet, it's super easy. It's also affordable. The person who posted the pattern used hardware-store twine. The instructions are daft confusing for a first-time crocheter, but I found mikeyssmail's youtube granny square tutorial. From looking at the picture, the bottom of the bag is a big granny square circle.
I'm halfway through a bottom panel, so I don't know how the sides will be, but it can't be harder than figuring out how to start a circle.

non-knitter here, i havent looked thru all the pages but i just saw an ad for a site called www.knit-for-brains.com and they sell cruelty free yarns and supplies, etc. just wanted to let you guys know!

Since I'm not great at gauging yet I've been sticking with projects where it doesn't really matter - like baby clothes (they'll grow into and out of them soon enough) and now the shopping bag. When I get good I'm going to try something more exacting.
Ughh, i've been slacking in the area of knitting lately. I dont know what to make next thats easy and with straight needles (unless i can figure out dpns. i guess thats what i should do)
I was thinking of one hat first though, haha.
My mesh bag is on hold (I've completed both bottom parts and am starting the sides) because I've been recruited into going home for Easter, so I'm knitting my mom dishcloths. Whenever we ask her what she wants, that's her response. Wild and crazy times.
My dpb life lessons:
I made that baby hat on dpns. I tried to cast on on the dpn, but there was too much of a gap between needles. It was much easier to cast on using a straight needle and then transfer it to dpns.
I also learned (I think this is the pattern), that if you have all of your cast on edges directed inward, toward the center of the dpns, when you start, the stitches won't get twisted.
And, the hat was for straight needles, so I had to reverse the wrong side stitches, because with the dpn I only had right sides.

I've been making some cool, non-labia type items from my "Positively Crochet!" book. I recently got it, since I got tired of the Happy Hooker (hehe), and it is similar in types of projects (something someone under 70 would consider wearing). I also got "couture crochet," and though it seems to have some good instructions on making your own pattern, a lot of the patterns are too conservative for my 21 y o self. High necks and such.

Thanks. They're not my own patterns. The patterns are pretty easy though. There are books of patterns and they will tell you that, for example, each diamond is six stiches. So, you just cast on a series of, for example again, six stitches and a border until you get about the right width. Then knit rows until it's a square. I hope my mom uses them. They're really quick and a buck each to make, so she'll be getting many, many more.
I took a break from knitting & crocheting, but I'm ready to get back into it and spent the last hour looking for a project. I found some prospective ideas on ravelry.

i love the lacing effect on the first one (and the colors!). I haven't knitted in who knows how long, i've been thinking about breaking out the needles though lately, since i've been sewing again, too.
