What musical instruments do ya'll play?

I never really learned to play an instrument, though I attempted piano starting at age 18 and took voice lessons for several years. I tried cello one summer and made it through the first Suzuki book but then stopped.  I consider myself a music drop out.

But i am living  vicariously through my family.  DH plays piano (clarinet, too, but it's been years).  DD plays piano, violin and saxophone, and DS plays saxophone and guitar.

Our instrument collection includes 4 saxophones, piano, dulcimer, recorders, guitars, violin, and the ancient clarinet, all the way down to the Kazoo which I now favor.

Just curious what you all play, how long you kept at it, what instruments you have floating around your houses.

I played the Tenor Sax, Flute, Contra Bass Clarinet, Violin, Piano, and dabbled on a Marimbah once. My son plays guitar and violin. I see I'm not alone with the sax/clarinet thing tho!!!  :> ;)b

In fifth grade, when we were choosing instruments, I told the director I wanted to play the tenor sax so I could be in the jazz band. He said, "How about the oboe?" Not one to say no, I took up the oboe and couldn't get away from it because no one else wanted to play it! It's a beautiful instrument, but I put it away about 5 years ago then sold it to help pay for a down payment on my house.  :)

Oh, and I also play piano.

The vuvuzela. :D

I've just been loaned a guitar and told to play it instead of lurking in my room being emo. So, uh, I'm kind of teaching myself? I can just about play Blowin' In The Wind, super sluggish snail's pace remix.

It seriously isn't. The things are eeeevil.

They're these noisemaker trumpets that came into popularity because of their use by spectators at World Cup matches. From a distance, a crowd of vuvuzelas sounds like you're about to die by being swarmed with angry bees.

*slightly bitter*

You could get up to speed on Neil Young's Old Laughing Lady pretty easily.  For most of the song you keep the same chord position and slide your hand to different frets.

Ooh, thanks for the suggestion! I like some Neil Young but hadn't thought to try my hand at any yet. I'll tackle that as my next endeavour.

I commend anyone who teaches him/herself how to play any instrument.
Rock on, Narcissus!

As for me, I'll play anything that I can hit, shake, or bang together to make noise. As long as there's no real scale of notes involved, I'm usually good to go. Favourites include cymbals, tambourine, small plastic trash can, large metal trash can, and bead-covered gourds.

I'm sure my family loves me practicing by playing the first 20 seconds of Ode to Joy... over... and over... and over... :>

I play guitar, bass, sing and can keep a couple of good basic beats on the drums. I hadn't been really making time for music playing (other than my vinyl) but now i am playing with another and writing music. I have band practice again tomorrow.

I play the Guitar and Bass.  I've been teaching myself for the past 4 years and feel I've gotten to a point where I don't sound awful and am playing now with one of my best friends who plays drums.  We set up some recording gear and just see what we can come up with.

I own three guitars:  Black Fender Telecaster, Sunburts Fender Stratocaster, Black Epiphone G-400.
I own one bass:  Black Fender Precision Bass.

Love playing them drums. I've been playing for about 8 years. I've had the pleasure of playing in many different situations. Middle school concert band, middle school jazz band, high school concert band, high school marching band, high school jazz band, and my favorite, the high school drumline.

It's pretty safe to say... I was a huge band nerd.

This does bring up an interesting thought for me... Do you stop being a band nerd as soon as you're out of high school or college?

Wow, I can't believe I just found this thread!
I've been playing (tenor) trombone for 9 years now. My father is a musician, so it's 'pick and instrument and learn to play it well or die' in my family. lol.
I just recently found a free wikipedia-esque website for sheet music that has passed its copyright--so you know, all the early classical stuff, up until some very early jazz. You can download sheet music for free and print.
I'm working on Mussorgsky's "A night on bare mountain" when I have free time at school.

Not sure if I am allowed to do this, but my brother makes top of the line hand crafted cajons. They had a booth at NAMM last month for the first time, and Longineu Parsons of Yellowcard became their first endorsement. So if you play percussion, check them out!
