Final UPDATE: Wish Me Luck!

Okay, VWers...I don't often do this, but I think I'm in need of some positive thoughts, well-wishes, and all the good luck you can spare.

As you may or may not know, I've recently moved to Atlanta, GA with my boyfriend, who's getting his Master's in Philosophy at GSU. Anyway......I have not yet completed my degree, but instead I'm looking for a job around here that will let me apply my skills AND pay enough to cover all my expenses. I've applied to a few places so far with no luck. My boyfriend is living off loans/assistantship money, and I am completely independent. SO....

Today I am going to Trader Joe's (Midtown area) to apply for a sign-painting position. This job would allow me to be creative, make art by hand (which I greatly prefer to the computer graphics crap), AND cover my expenses quite generously.

I have to present a sample of work or a portfolio to be considered. I haven't really refined my portfolio as such, and I actually haven't created much of anything in the last two years at least. So I'm just taking a large pad of newsprint with a few chalk drawings/quick paintings....hopefully the "unprofessional" presentation won't hurt my chances, but then, TJ's is pretty laid back. Plus, the sample signs I've made so far have been so much fun to make, and I think they might be just what they're looking for. I've no idea how many other applicants they've gotten, what my competition is like, etc.....but I think that (knock on wood) my previous experience and education will work to my advantage.

I'm shaking with nervousness and excitement....I really want this job!!

I'll let you know how it goes today and if I hear back from them. And either way, I'll upload photos of my recent signwork to show you all, because I'm just so damn proud of them!

ehhhhhehhwishmeluck! thanks in advance, b/c I know how awesome you all are with these things...

ohh, awesome, cw... i bet you will get it... from what i have seen of your work, you rock!

Good Luck CW-

I'm confident you did great at the interview. From your posts and writings, it is obvious that you have good people skills and are a caring person. Anyone who has viewed your art knows you are the right person for the job. Good things happen to good people. Think positive and believe in yourself.

It takes much courage to move as you described, having to start over in a new place, uncertainty over employment, paying the bills, etc. Don't let it stress you out - you will find that things will fall into place before you know it.

Everyone around here is in your corner. ;)b

OOOookay... so, there's not much to update yet, but since some of you are curious:

It turns out that the hiring manager dude wants to wait and collect all the applications (how long? how many apps? who knows!) and then call back the applicants for interviews and a sort of "portfolio review." The ad said "apply in person and be prepared to show examples of your work," so of course I dragged all my stuff along, sweat my balls off practically running the mile or so between the Midtown MARTA station and TJ's...in the rain...

So when I got in there to turn in my app, I asked the guy if I could just leave my materials there (instead of drag it back along for the interview like I was apparently "supposed to" do)....and he said that would be fine, and he attached my app to the notepad I gave him. *whew*  So now I just have to wait for a phone call......

Hopefully, my application will look good enough to warrant a call for an interview...and hopefully, the examples I left will help rather than hurt my chances.

THANK YOU ALL so much for the encouragement (and all those compliments! *blush*)....I can tell you that despite my weary, sweaty, rain-soaked travels to the store, I felt very confident and positive the whole way there. Seriously, without all of your support, I'd have likely started crying nervous tears halfway to the store and/or started stuttering (as I am apt to do) when I approached the guy who took my application.....I love you VWers!  :)>>>

as promised, here's just a little taste of what I *hope* will impress the shit out of the people in charge of hiring:
