Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

OK! Heheh yay manky hair pics! Yea I ran it past a certain someone last night and he was like... why?! But apparently will support whatever I want to do. Not that I would have listened if he hated the idea, if I'm being honest :P

haha, good.
also: can we meet him??
I kinda hoped my hair might be looking good again by the time my husband noticed and then I could be like : wow this is awesome!  Instead of : I'm too much of a hippy to care how bad my hair looks!  : /

I'm sure you can :)
I hope my hair survives..I kinda have doubts...

Shell, when is your haircut?

gaaa, I haven't booked it yet, but I really really need one.
I may have to book it pronto and then start the non-washing after that.

but..but... then we won't have an even comparison!
YOU JUST WANT YOUR HAIR TO BE LESS MANKY THAN OURS!! ; )

haha.  I get my hair cut, like, once a year, next one will be in December, so at least I don't have that to worry about....

I don't get my hair cut. I trim my fringe myself sometimes. That's like it. Haha

I don't have hair cutting skills.  And my hair gets wild.
I would not cut it at all, but at the  moment we tend to have friends getting married every summer, so that gives me an excuse to get it tidied up : )

it's only coz I've got quite a few split ends....and I'm trying to grow out my layers.

However, I have decided that I will wait until my hair is all sparkly and clean on it's own (ie after 2 months or so) and then go to one of those places that doesn't insist on washing your hair when it gets cut....you do have those in NZ yeah.

Coz lets face it my hairs likely to get greasy anyway and so I'll just tie it up all the time to begin with and so it won't matter if I have a ton of split ends.

Let the hair unwashing begin!!

I went to the gym today and did my first hair 'wash' with water only.  I didn't bother dying it as I'm scared by not conditioning it it will get dried out and I didn't want to exacerbate that.  So we'll see how it looks tomorrow.

Eeeeeeeee excited for the updates! So far after nearly 3 days of no washing (haven't tried a water wash yet, just haven't wet it at all so far) My hair is pretty good and normal, though the fringe is a bit on the greasy side. But clipped back it's fine :)

This is a great thread - I'm having issues with the baking soda. I have it in a little sqeeze bottle in the shower, and I've been slowly increasing the ratio of baking soda because it doesn't seem like it's cleaning my hair. It's at the point that the baking soda doesn't stay dissolved in the water. At my head, especially in the front, it seems clean, but in the back and at the ends it's not so nice.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be wrong with my system? I use apple cider vinegar to rinse.

i used to always wash with shampoo and conditioner... EVRY TIME I SHOWERED. lol.. i can't even believe it.
anyway, in, like, 2007? early 2008? I got very annoyed with my long hair i "had" to wash a lot so I chopped it off and started using dr. bronners.. then I just kind of started using it less and less and then stopped using anything. i now very very very rarely use a dread shampoo that we have sitting around because it needs to be used up (originally purchased for dustin when he was growing dreads, but his hair has been shaved for almost a year now... this is like an 8oz bottle).
shampoo just strips your hair of oil and conditioner softens it up because you are taking away all of the oil that's supposed to be there! i've never used baking soda and vinegar, but i feel that would be the same as shampoo and conditioner, just slightly less chemicals.
Here are a couple recent pictures.

I feel like a freak because I wash my hair everyday with shampoo and conditioner  :-\

For the last 4 months I have been trying to use a combination of Castile soap to wash my hair, and than extra virgin coconut oil to moisturize it afterwards. For some reason though, using a vinegar rinse to clean my scalp didn't work for me like it apparently does for everyone else - probably due to my really curly hair that doesn't release particles very easily. So I am now down to washing it 2 times a week with Giovanni shampoo/conditioner.

I have been trying to figure out how to do the water only method with my hairtype, but I cannot find anyone else with it as well who has managed to keep their scalp clean, and I am a little leery of trying it without examples from someone who has done it successfully.

DH made me LOL. I mentioned this thread, and he said, "These are the same people who don't shave or use deoderant, right?" (the whole "baking soda deoderant" thing exercised him for weeks.) I said, "Well, yeah, I guess some of them probably are the same ones." Pause for thought.
"And how many of them don't have dates for Valentine's Day?"  :-D :-D :-D

Poor guy. He just doesn't grokk.

it really does get less oily guys. i so thought the same thing as you all when i started.

it's like how i don't use lip balm anymore, i realized it just made me need it and my lips just have enough moisture now, anyway. your body is smart and will end up accommodating :)

i also don't shave or use deodorant... yes.

For me, AC vinegar wasn't strong enough to get the more oily parts of my hair clean. I had to use a white vinegar.

ha, yeah if you tell me someone else doesn't use deodorant/shampoo, I'm still like 'Ew, gross!'.
But I haven't used deodorant in 3 months or more, and I think I'mm fine (ask me again in summer!), and I'm really hoping my hair doesn't need shampoo, so yeah maybe I think I'm gross!

I think I'm doing it out of laziness > environmental factors > money

I was too lazy to find vegan deodorant when I moved to NZ, so I just stopped using it!

my head feels dirty if I go too long w/o washing.  I don't use deodorant either, but I use baking soda and corn starch.  My pitts are so dry now I could go days w/o using it though.
