Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

It never gets heavy or anything anymore.
And it's super silky, kind of like how it would be if I was washing it but better because its not damaged and poopy.

It's just niceeeeee.

So, I had been washing my hair with (Giovanni) shampoo and (Nature's Gate) conditioner (on tips only) for awhile, which was fine but my hair started to get flaky, and then pretty itchy. So, I did a baking soda wash, and it pretty much instantly felt better. I've since done mainly baking soda/ACV rinse washes, and like it. I've done some intermittent shampoo and conditioner washes, but I end up itchy again and my hair honestly comes out way more after I've washed with shampoo. I always thought the hair coming out was just normal for my hair, but it doesn't do that when I wash with baking soda.

Moral: baking soda ftw.

Every time people change their shampoo or conditioner a lot of hair comes loose. Why this is so, I can't tell you, but I chop and change a lot with shampoo and I noticed this, so I asked my hairdresser and she told me that it's normal. Maybe it has to do with the stripping action that happens when you change shampoos.

No, it happens when I use shampoo. I don't change shampoos, but when I'm washing my hair normally, there's usually hair that comes out every once and a while. I thought this was normal, but it does not happen at all when I use baking soda.

That's what I meant. If you suddenly use shampoo when you haven't been, it will cause your loose hair to come out. Same as when a person changes shampoos or conditioners. I don't use conditioner but I do change shampoos a lot.

but I don't change shampoos! It's just a constant thing when I'm using shampoo, and it's always been that way. Even before I ever even knew about baking soda for hair or anything, when I was younger, my hair has always fallen out this way. What I mean is, I always thought it was just my hair. I now know that it is shampoo that causes it (and not just changing shampoos or on/off shampoo). Not saying changing shampoos doesn't also cause it, though.

So do I. At least once. In hot sweaty weather, sometimes twice.

My hair used to occassionally fall out in the shower when I used liquid shampoo. I've used solid lush bars for 2-ish years (changing b/w bars every other shower or so) and it doesn't anymore. I think it probably has not so much to do with the change in shampoos itself, but if you're changing to a more 'stripping' shampoo then yes.

HAVENT WASHED MY HAIR IN A YEAR I WIN.
I don't do baking soda or anything. Baking soda is lame for hair. I stopped doing cornstarch a long time ago too, and I stopped getting it wet.

And my hair is fantastic. In the past week 2 people told me my hair is the best and didn't freak out when I told them about the no washing thing, heckyess.

Do you still dye it? What about when your scalp sweats?

I'm too lazy to check if the answer to this is in this thread.........

for those of you who have done apple cider vinegar for hair conditioner how does it work?  As in how much do you use?  Does it get mixed with water?

I have run out of conditioner and need to wash my hair before work tomorrow morning and if I don't use conditioner I find my hair isn't as nice, so what do I do with the vinegar?

I've used vinegar in the final rinse since I was about 3. You put a little in the bottom of a cup, like an eighth of a cup, and fill the cup with water. (If your hair is very thick or very long, use a quarter cup). When you rinse at the end, pour the vinegar over your hair and work it in. Rinse well. Done.

thanks yabbit.  After all that I managed to get the last little bit of conditioner out by rinsing the bottle out with water.

Your hair looks so soft sarah.  If I don't wash everyday I get flaky so  I have to.  Which is weird bc when my hair was short I could go two to three days between washing and no flakes but, now that it's long I can't.  Maybe bc when it was short I changed my color at least every two weeks.  Now I don't color.  How are the lush bars?  I want to try them but. the last time I tried something my hair got nasty matted.  I used Dr. Bronners which I love just not for my hair.  I think my hair is just to coarse and thick.  At least I'll never go bald :)

Larisuena- I alternate between the "Godiva" "New" and "Soak and Float" solid bars, the last one smells really really weird and campfire-y but my scalp sometimes gets flaky from not rinsing shampoo out all the way and it totally fixes that. They also make a solid conditioner called Jungle that smells and works amazing! p.s, I have a ton of super thick hair too and tried using dr. bronners on a small section and it made my hair more tangled and dry than ever :\
