Happy Equinox, Everybody!!

Ok, this is a holiday no one celebrates but me.
Today is the Autumnal Equinox. The beginning of Autumn.
My favourite day of the year.
Even without deciduous trees, I love it because it means the heat of hell summer is over.
*cue Justin Hayward's Forever Autumn*

Happy Equinox to ye, dear yabbit.

Of course, it's the Spring one for me, and I am very much enjoying the sights and sounds and SMELLS of it. Those wonderful, ephemeral, enigmatic smells that begin to come from the earth and the trees and the flowers, whose sources you can't quite pin down, but which make you feel soooo good.

Also, I bid a hearty goodbye good riddance to the worst winter I've ever had, as far as I can recall. Not wholly to do with the weather, but also with the confusion and stress and unhappiness after many many upheavals, mostly in the form of freakin' earthquakes.

I have always loved the equinoxes best, as they are the pinnacles of the seasons of change - when things are either pushing up out of the fertile earth, or falling down to feed it and prepare it for sleep.

Girl, you're a poet.
That's why I love you.

I used to watch Disney's "Weekenders" cartoon and Tino's mom (kind of a Southern-fried hippy) celebrated both Equinoxes instead of the traditional holidays. Tino was all excited because "that's when I know I'll get an absolutely top-shelf present." In one episode it was a bouncy castle!!

Well no top-shelf presents or real celebrations here, except in my mind and heart.
Sometimes those are the best parties.

And me!  It is Mea'n Fo'mhair, also called Mabon in neopagan circles, or The Second Harvest.  Time to go out and get the trees drunk!

Merry Equinox to both hemispheres, and a most happy Mabon to all of Us in the north!

....a snippet of lyrics from "Springtime for Hitler" from The Producers just popped in my head, but "Hitler" was replaced by "Heli", and "Germany" with "New Zealand." ::)

Autumnal equinox makes me sad.  It signals the end of warmth and light and the start of the dark, damp, cold, rain- and snow-filled winter.  It also signals the end of hiking for the season and being back in the gym.

Blech.

That's what it felt like in Texas today too.  104 degrees.

The autumn is definitely my favorite time of the year, especially in New Hampshire...

Think of it as a good excuse to curl up with soup, or hot tea/coffee, a good book or DVD and your most comfortable jammies. Snow and rain are much more bearable in those conditions. Particularly if there are chocolate chip cookies about, but that's just by the way.

Yes, but I've been chasing a leak.  In 2004 it equated to gallons of water in my house each storm and now it's down to drips in a big storm.  I get anxiety and a tight chest when it rains, just waiting to see if my house has finally stopped leaking.  After a couple of leakless years maybe I won't hate winter so much.  I'll let you know after a leakless year.

On a leakless night...got a restless mind!  (sung to the tune of Dokken's Sleepless Night)

Wishing you high & dry times hh!
