Let's talk some more about tattoos, shall we?

I know we have threads, and I know we talk about them in different places, but......here we are.

Now that I just have touch ups left on my chest, I'm trying to decide what to get to cover up my little blip of a tat. on my hip. I think I want to get something that ties in with my chest piece.

eta: I deleted that creepy picture. It was just too creepy!

theo, that really sucks that the guy was so rude and won't do it how you want. i hope you find an awesome artist who will tattoo your beautiful piece!

deviant, she explains it here:

Thanks to all those who like it :) Yea every part of the tattoo means something and I invented the entire thing, altogether it's a pretty cool representation of who I am/where I've come from.

The overall shape is an almond blossom, because my paternal grandmother (who I take after most of all my family) used to call me Almond Blossom as a baby.

The top petal is a figure 8 and represents me - my birthday is 18/8/88 and 8 has always been my number, it also includes the first letter of my name and the eternity symbol, so I guess it just means me and integrity to myself.

Going clockwise, the 2nd petal is a jester made of flame, long story but it represents my Dad and his side of the family.

3rd petal is a koru overlayed with a southern cross, representing my Mum and her side of the family - displaced for many generations and but ending with a strong NZ connection. (Both of my parents' petals were chosen by them)

4th petal is a slightly altered Maori symbol which means friendship and support because my friends have been a strong influence in who I am.

Final petal (my favourite) - a flying pig :) both a reference to Pink Floyd's (strong presence throughout my life) and a symbol for belief in the impossible and hope for the future.

So yea! Everything that has made me who I am.

Theo,

I like the drawing. But it will translate oddly in the head of some tattoo artists.
The base shape is a five point star, petal, what have you.

I think the concept is there. You have been lamenting over this since high school and its well ingrained in you head. Would it look better if the symbols took on geometric qualities? Each independent petal more symmetric?

What you have created is a mandala.
Finding an tattoo artist that specializes in that art form can make easy work of your idea.

There is piercing shop in Wellington called Ninjaflower, I have talked to one of the guys there. Sent him a message.
They might be able to lead you to a better artist, if you ask them...

oww, which shop is it? :)

Monique's Euro tattoo in Henderson. I don't think many of their online galleries actually show the best of their work. They have dozens and dozens of folders of images of their work at the studio, and some of it is just amazing.  It's also a super friendly, inviting place, which, I think, is fairly important, given what you entrust them to do to your body. Monique learnt how to tattoo in Germany, and does most of their sketch work, but not soo many tattoos anymore.  Her daughter, Buzzy, does fantastic work. Anyway, check them out:

It says "The summer came and then it swept us away"
You can see at the end of summer and start of came is where it tickled lots, its thicker from me jumping, heh.

Finally got my tattoos done! Sandy hurt her back a few weeks back and so we had to reschedule. Took two hours and it wasn't pleasant, but I'm really pleased with the results:

I'll be leaving it as it is :)

Very nice!

You'll probably get the colored in question a lot - I get it all the time with my peacock - I just prefer all black on me.....

I get the color quesiton for my platypus. Haha. But i have like one line of color outlining the black on the inside. So i'm like, it is colored? haha.

Love it though catski! Seriouslyyyy. It rocks. Have you had a hard time sleeping though?

Oh my goodness one of my secret desires other than my career and paying off my massive school loans is to get sleeves on both arms and across my back with Ernst Haekel's scientific images of microorganisms!!

I felt like just getting an outline. I think it'll wind up being colored in. Maybe with something else by it, idk. Haha.

cute!
and funny that you weren't even planning it but walked out with a new tattoo. You already have one on your other ankle, yeah?

Ok, so I'd like some opinions.....
I have a very large peacock on my back (pics in my profile if you haven't seen it)- its lonely.  I'd like to get something on or across my shoulders....below are some of my ideas of style and design....my main problem is that I have this stupid Chinese symbol on my right shoulder - totally in the way....

I like the positioning of this one

but I like the style of this

Erin, print out all your sources and inspirations and go and talk to some artists. A lot of tattooists can do cover-ups and might be able to help you find a way to avoid the tattoo you already have or even incorporate it into the design. I think both those styles are lovely and I would imagine a good artist could take influences from both and come up with something amazing :)

erin - I love the style of the second one and I think it would work really well with your peacock.
I also really like the position of the first one - but I bet it's ouchies!!

I really really want anotherr tattoo - and I know what I want (kinda stealing Cali's idea), but not sure where I want it.  It's a very personal thing and I'm getting it for me and no-one else (yes I am vain and a big decider on my otherr was how they would look to other people).  Part of me wants to get it on my left hip, but then the other vain part of me thinks just behind my left ankle and at least then I can show it off if I wish!
Damn my vanity!!

And it makes showing people that ask to see it lots easier haha. But get it where you really want it!! I usually draw something or put on a fake tattoo of where i want a tattoo to be like the week before so i can see if i'd like something being there for good.
