Boot Camp (Let's make this a thread on accountability)
OK, I am going to measure and weigh myself on Saturday. For those of you that said some of your summer goals were to lose weight and get fit....hope you will join this thread.
Not that I am going to post my weight and measurements but maybe I need to be accountable.
Sooooooo... I will make a comment on Saturday. Then every Saturday, I am going to say weight lost and inches lost. (remember that if you gain muscle the scale will not move or go up. Use a tape measure)
I truly am going to put myself through boot camp. The program I have been watching on TV has shown that in 6 weeks with real effort, one can make a huge difference.
As well, I am going to comment each Saturday on how am reaching the goals I stated for the summer.
We all stated goals for the summer. Let us all be accountable. Some we will attain, some we may fall short on but lets all support each other.
When the fall officially starts (when the h*ll is that?), we can state what we actually achieved.
Sometimes our cyber friends are our best friends. We are non judgemental and hugely supportive.
I know for me, the hugest thing is quitting smoking.
Next, getting fit and healthy. One of my goals is to walk and hike with Cali more. That will fall in to the get fit and healthy boot camp thing.
One was to spend more time with Biko. I clip his wings in the summer, he prefers to walk anyway. I will start taking him to the park on my walks with Cali. That way he can feel he is a part of my life.
Spending more time with my BF. He is hugely busy, I am hugely busy. This is going to be a tough one.
De-cluttering....I am ready. I want it done and I want it done now. I am finally so sick of the mess that I want to do it, Get it done!
So guys, lets have a huge reach your summer goals support group. No better place than this board.
Veg on...

Fall officially starts with the Equinox, when there are the same hours of daylight and darkness, so if you can find that (it's in September I think) you know.
I just got back from 6200 steps of walking. I pushed the wrong button when I wanted to find the distance that covered, tho, so I ended up erasing it. Rats.
DH is making lunch today, but it's ovolacto friendly. Bless him. :)>>>

I'm working on losing about 45 lbs in total. I started Weight Watchers back in March, and I've since lost 15 lbs. (most of which I attribute to cutting out dairy, since I've done no extra exercise.) I need to get my butt in gear and get more active, though! It's tough because I work 3 part time jobs, plus have an active 3 year old to look after, but I'm determined.
I bought some roller skates (!!) recently, and am just about to fly back to my childhood home on Monday for a month long visit. It's where I learned to skate, so I plan on skating at least a mile each day to start with. I am the world's worst procrastinator, though, so I know I'll need extra encouragement to keep it up!
Well.....I don't need to loose weight (technically I'm "underweight"....I have an amazing metabolism)....please don't hate me for telling you that.... :) I DO however need to adopt some healthier lifestyle practices. I drink way to much and don't sleep enough....I need to stop drinking every night after work because I'm so stressed out and I need to sleep more.
Well, I'll participate in this thread in that I have a new goal of running 5 miles a day, minimum. I am a runner, and I do long distances (these past couple weeks I have been doing a half-marathon or two a week), but I am afraid I will slack off at my really intense job training this coming month and not run at all. So I am going to just have to get up early, every morning, and do it. I even have a spiffy tracker that coordinates with my ipod and measures my distance. This is how I learned to run in college (daily morning runs), so I know I can do it. I do need to lose weight, but that's a little bit separate. This is more of a fitness goal. Yay for accountability!
Thanks Di, my brain has been in neutral for the last 2 days. Well, busy on other things but for all practical purposes I have the sense God gave a lemon! :P
Di this is great!!! I don't really know what goal I should have for a goal--maybe like KMK I'll commit to my running. I have only been running for 3 months, but I'm sure I should be at a higher place millage wise than where I am now--I'm only doing 15 miles a week--I guess I should try getting that up to 20 or more!
You're so awesome Di! Thanks for posting this :)
Way to go Di! Good luck and best wishes to everyone striving for goals.
I'm a bit hesitant to join because I don't do well with this sort of thing because I get an "all or nothing" kind of attitude and feel like a failure and beat myself up when I slip. So I'll have some gentle goals.
That said, I'd like to loose 10 pounds this summer. The pic on my avatar is me at my goal weight and happy about it. I've gained 15 pounds since that picture and I'm not happy about that at all.
I'd like to eat more vegan and less ovo-lacto. I'm "almost vegan" anyway, but want to continue that path.
Stay away from the junk food people bring in at work, which fits in with the goals above somewhat.
Go to the gym to work out a minimum of 4 times a week.
Meditate more in the evenings.
I would like to join this thread!! I am new to Vegweb, and new to the whole vegan lifestyle. IT started out as a way to lose pounds, but now it is so much more than that. I am about 8 pounds away from my goal weight of 125. If I can get there and be comfortable, I would like to be 120. My goal will be to lose 8 pounds before Sept. I think I can do it. I am also a runner. I have two small girls and it is so hard to find time to run that I usually end up running with them a double stroller. I other goal will be to run at least 3 miles 4 days a week. Once I master 3 miles and a decent pace, I will up the milage.
It is so interesting to me the a vegan would have to worry about weight. I am under the misconception that vegan means no sugar or "bad" food. That is just the way I have approached this lifstyle. It is much easier than I thought.
BTW, I was 133 this morning. Maybe next Saturday I will be 131 ???

Well, Newbie......
Today at work, I was thinking no one had responded to this post so I was going to let it slide. As in not be accountable. Now thanks to you, I have to follow through!!!! So a big thank you, I think.
Of course you are welcome. Do you still want to lose 45 pounds or is it 30 with the 15 already lost?
I am going to get on the scale in the morning and see where I stand and also tape measure myself.
Losing weight is not the easiest thing as I am sure many of us can attest to. I know I am really going to have to push myself. Losing weight when I was young was fairly easy. Now as I am reaching a monumental birthday this summer, not so easy.
Excellent on the roller skates. Are they roller skates or roller blades? I have roller blades, tried it a few times and for some reason was terrified. I would love to find the roller skates that you used a key to tighten them on running shoes. Felt I had some control back then. Of course that was about 100 years ago.
Have fun on your month long visit to your childhood home. Try to post once a week on how you are doing with your weight loss and fitness goals. :-)
We will all encourage you.
Veg On,
Di
Thanks, Di!
I am still looking to lose about 30 lbs, give or take a few. I'm never going to be thin as I have quite a heavy build, so I think I'm my healthiest around 135-140 lbs. Losing another 30 would put me right at 135 at 5'4".
The skates are quads, meaning the old fashioned lace-up boots with four wheels. :) I contemplated roller blades, but I have always loved skating and wanted something I was already familiar with as opposed to having to learn with a different medium, so to speak. I'm really excited about them!
I need to get the tape measure out and will do when I get settled in with my grandparent's. I have lost a lot of inches since starting this plan, though I'm not sure how many. My work pants were tight around my waist and they are now all but falling off me, so it's a pretty significant amount at any rate!
I'm looking forward to making this journey with all the rest of you. I'm sure we will be able to help each other hang in there! :)
Okay, well....not sure if this is the spot, BUT I am now on day six of having no refined sugars!! I woke up feeling like crap! But now that I did my day count, I feel better knowing the reason I lack basic motor skills and my mind is foggy.....I'm no longer having sugar cravings....so now it is down to breaking the physical addiction....My wonderful b/f made up a beautiful fruit salad for me that I just finished eating ALL of it!
My goal is to go 30 days w/o refined sugars. So I'm 20% there!! I know I'll be needing help though! Especially with getting the calories I need to keep the weight I have and possibly gain some more!! (That's how I got so addicted to sugar....trying to add more calories to my diet w/o feeling more "full".....my mantra has been "empty calories are my friends!!")
You can do it..the mental challenges have always proven to be far more challenging than the physical ones..but they enhance you as a person.
My goal is to run in the morning..I've been doing it in the afternoon and it's waaay hot. Tough to coordinate food, school, work, and running.
Di, you are too funny!
Giving up sugar is really hard. I find that it is hard because sugar is in EVERYTHING!! I have given up the obvious suger for three weeks now. I feel so much better. I will give up the hidden sugar soon. God help me!!
My goal is to run in the morning..I've been doing it in the afternoon and it's waaay hot. Tough to coordinate food, school, work, and running.
Umm, KMK...he's a runner too! (I know how much I love people talking about me in...3rd person (?) when I'm there...so enjoy that... ;))
You can count me in for boot camp. I want, no need, to lose 20 pounds (according to my doctor). According to me it's more like 30 that needs to go. I was walking 3 miles, 3 days a week up until my back pain got the better of me (2 bulging discs). I'm starting PT next week for my back so I guess my goal is to get back to the park where I walk and drop the first 20 pounds by my birthday which is October 1st. Wouldn't that be a nice birthday present for me!
I've made a lot of dietary changes lately that I am pleased with, due to beccalynn and the "raw with me" thread. The one area I need to improve in is eliminating even more of the processed food I eat. Adding more raw foods isn't enough. Qunitess has also been a good influence as I am just about finished with her 2 week health plan. What I really I need to do is reduce my meat substitute and the ramen consumption. I eat far too much ramen, probably 3 - 5 bowls a week. It's my snack food full of palm oil, fried noodles, and msg.....mmm!
Today I weighed in at 171 and I shall shoot for 150 by October. I will not eat ramen today.
Di, thanks for the support. You're going to have to be saying "walk on" along with Veg On!
hanash, good luck with the sugar. It is indeed in so much stuff it's frustrating.
blueheeler, good luck with running in the AM. I can barely crawl out of bed to make it to work on time. LOL
Storm, I can appreciate the challenges you have and you've done same amazing work to get there. Life without ramen can be tough, but it's a horrible food - refined pasta, fat, salt....no wonder it's so good. LOL

Wow, that's an amazing goal. I've always wanted to be able do to a triathalon or marathon.... I have a friend who does triathalons and it's so amazing, she's so strong as I'm sure you are also. Good for you! :)
Well.....I don't need to loose weight (technically I'm "underweight"....I have an amazing metabolism)....please don't hate me for telling you that.... :) I DO however need to adopt some healthier lifestyle practices. You hit one of my concerns dead on. I drink too much and I don't sleep enough. It is a habit for me to come home from a stressful day at work and pour a rum and diet coke while I check out my emails. As well, I have terrible sleeping habits.
These are things I definitely have to work on this summer. Adopting a healthier lifestyle. If I cut out some of the drinking, I would drop some pounds without even trying.
So many of us fall in to a routine or rut and we just continue to do it.
TOTALLY! That is exactly me, it's become route to go straight for the wine as soon as I get home from work so I can 'relax'. It all started when I was put on a very stressful program at work.... I'd be so stressed out and overwhelmed when I got home I'd drink a glass of wine...which became two glasses and three glasses. Luckily 3 is my limit because I'm kind of a light wieght (lol). well, the program is winding down and my routine is still in full gear! I need to get a handle on it.... My problem is with drinking wine I end up eating very little if any dinner because the liquid fills me up. So not healthy. Then I'm up peeing all night (so I get horrible sleep), then I'm tired all day and feel crappy, get home from work, pour wine and it all starts over. Anyway, I need to find better, healthier ways to relax. I'm hoping to just get it to one glass of wine a night by end of summer. One 'trick' I've been using is I pour a half (or less) glass of wine and then pour seltzer or tonic water to fill the glass to make like a wine spritzer. Sometimes I put frozen fruit in the glass which gives the drink a nice, suttle fruity flavor. Anyway, this way I feel like I'm drinking my normal 3 glasses when in actuality I'm only getting like 1.5 glass of actual wine before my tummy is full of liquid and don't want anymore....
Thanks for your support! It really helps just to talk about it and know someone is listening

So yesterday I got out my mat and did a few beginner's yoga stretches...booooy I am so not 20 anymore! In my youth I was so supple I could do the turtle, with my face flat down on the floor, or that thing where you put your ankle behind your neck. No more! Now I can't even touch my nose to my knees from a sitting postion. Work to do here!
yoga is awesome, good for you :) Pilates works well too, that's what I usually do and I've gotten really good result from only 1/2 an hour a day.
This thread is so cool, good idea Di! You all are amazing and strong for embarking on the journey of weight loss and lifestyle changes. I can't tell you how many morbidly obese people I know (people who need to loose weight far more than any of you) who just don't care and don't want to change there lifestyle. I know a lady who is so obese she was recently diagnosed with life threatening diabetes and she still eats cake and mcdonalds for lunch.....she's such a sweet lady and I hate to see her making her condition worse! To top it off she smokes too! Situations like that I just can't understand. I don't know why someone would want to keep perpetuating such a serious problem.
Losing weight is really hard so good for you guys! Although I don't need to loose weight now, at one point in my life I wanted to lose 40 pounds. When I was first diagnosed with lupus about 10 years ago I was put on tons of steroids for almost a year...subsequently I gained 40 pounds. I know I lost the weight by making simple changes at first, like working out at least 30 minutes a day and cutting out all 'unhealthy' food....fast food, ect. I know once I started seeing results I was inspired to make more changes to reach my goal. I also had a good support system at the time, I think that is very important!
Oddly enough now I'm to light at 5'8" and 120 lbs.... The doctors seem to think if I weighed at least 130 lbs I might feel better. I also have a lot of vitamin deficiency problems (iron, b12, folate, vitamin D, low blood sodium....) and this was all before my decision to go veg. With me having lupus who knows if the vitamin issues are from the meds I'm on, the condition itself or my low weight. Every doc has a diffrent opinion so I don't really know what to believe.
Keep up the good work everyone and keep posting to get more support and encouragement. I'm excited to read about all of your progress!

Hey Storm :) That's awesome what you are trying to achieve!!!My b-day is my goal date too :) I figured there is no gift I would rather have than to FINALLY be at my goal weight! What do you eat for your meat subs? Is it a lot of analougs or tofu and tempha? And for the ramen--do you buy the packaged kind or do you make it your self? I've switched almost entirely to foods I cook or bake myself and have really seen the difference in calories/ fat etc. I know how difficult it can be to do a lot of cooking though--so time consuming! I try to make up several portions at once so they are just on hand--I have a few super easy recipies that are low fat/cal--email me if you would like them--they are pretty much one pot stuff :)
