Couch to 5K

I know a few of us are currently doing this, and some have done it before.
I started it a few weeks ago just to get back into regularly doing SOMETHING. I have done some running off and on for years, but I want to be indefinitely consistent with it. The first few weeks were really easy, but I liked the gradual beginning, and seeing some progression. It stresses to not do more, so I stuck with that.  I'm currently on week 4, day 3. There is a bit of a jump from W3 to W4, but I'm still good. The last running "program" I did increased a mile a week, basically..and that got old fast. I'm hoping this way, I can stick with it! I'm still looking forward to runs, and I have seen some more tone in my legs. I also like running based on a set time, because I tend to get too caught up in how fast (SLOW) I'm going, and trying to go faster makes me not run as long.

Hmm... where did you get them from? And is sizing difficult? (it seems like it might be with those toes!)

I bought them from the website: http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_Sprint_f.cfm

Those are the ones I have-the Sprint. I was worried about the sizing, too, but carefully measured my feet, and decided on a 39 (I wear an 8-9..usually 9). When I got them, I felt like they were a bit snug (mainly my pinky toe), but then I tore the top of the big toe, and they graciously sent me another pair (different colors, same size). The second pair was much better for some reason..or maybe I just got used to them. If you have any fat toes, I might consider getting one size up. I don't think it would be bad to have them a little bigger than your foot.

Oh, hah, you can buy them from the site. I found a few sellers on the westside, so I think I'll check it out next time I'm over there. I think I'd want to try them on, 'cause my foot size in confusing... measuring gives me 9-7/8 to 10, but according to a shoe size conversion it's 10.25. And I have wide feet.

After looking at some reviews, it doesn't seem like a bad deal for a good-for-you-shoe. ~$80, which is like my regular running shoe not on sale.

I did it!  ;)b

The only "exercise" I get is yoga (which I don't really count as exercise), some walking, and occasional nights out dance dancing. This little jaunt today wasn't very difficult, and felt pretty good - and I'm kinda proud of myself, even though it was just the first day. Probably could have kept going too, but I'm going to try to stick to the schedule. Yay for me.

Yay, Laura! Yes, keep at it. We can talk about it here!

fb, yeah..I would recommend trying them on if you can. I probably wouldn't have loved them nearly as much if I didn't get that free second pair.

It's been rainy and cold ever since my first run - we went out yesterday to give it a try, but made the mistake of bringing the dogs - and it was so icky and cold, we only lasted about 10 minutes.....it's not supposed to be nice again until Thursday, so I guess I'll be starting over then.

ive done 2 days of this so far and i love it!! i think it's really gonna help me be a better runner (or just not hate it as much)

are you not supposed to do it on a treadmill? i put the incline at 2.5-3.5 to mimic running outside..should i just run on the actual ground?

Any reason why you don't want to? I think it's fine on a treadmill, but I always found the treadmill to be a ton easier than running outside. Running is running, though, and I used to love the treadmill.

I had a much better (redo) of W5D1, and I'm ready for D2. I actually wanted to run longer at the last 5 min. run, but decided to stick to the plan. Pretty big jump coming up from W5D2 and D3!

the only reason i dont wanna do it outside is because im afraid of people seeing me run. lol. i know it's stupid but i feel like they think im not running fast enough or whatever. and plus mother nature's pms-ing really bad and i ever know if it's gonna suddenly get cold or start raining.

I am embarrassed about running outside too - when Andy and I went to the church in our neighborhood to run, a mob of teenagers on mopeds started circling us and it was really uncomfortable.....I kept praying that they wouldn't say anything to us....it's funny how I am intimidated by a gaggle of teens...

Bah.

When I very first started trying to run (like freshman year high school), I was overweight, and didn't want to run outside, so ran around our living room for like 10 mins. every day. So silly.

I find that no one really cares enough about anyone else to truly care what they are doing. If someone is like "oooh, look how slow she's going.." they are probably just concerned about themselves. Just try your hardest to not worry about other people, and do what you're comfortable with.

I also worry about what people are thinking when they see me run, but then I feel silly about thinking that and just tell myself I'm awesome. Sometimes it seems like there are always more people around when I'm switching from the run to the walk and I feel pretty lame. But I know that before I started doing this I was one of those people who'd see someone else run and be impressed and wish I could do the same, so now I get to be the impressive one!
Tonight I was running in sleet and it kinda sucked. I didn't get out of breath, which is good, but my shins and ankles are kind of hurting. I looked up some stretches to prevent shin splints so I hope that'll help. Wednesday I start week 2!

i used to do the running around my room thing too! hahaha. hopefully one of these days ill work up enough courage to run outside. today i biked outside (because you really cant do that inside. lol) and i didnt feel like anyone was staring. maybe that'll make me more comfortable with doing it.

That's exactly what I think the whole time I'm outside! And it's the main reason why I DON'T run on a regular basis (or haven't). But WHAT THE F, WHO CARES WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK - that's the attitude I'm trying to take in this. I have to get over my self-consciousness, and I hope this can help.

I did day 2 this morning - which wasn't as enjoyable as the first day. But that's fine. It was still fairly invigorating.

Fairly invigorating? Is that an oxymoron? Whatever.

DO IT! GO GO GO! Just say those words, over an over to yourself.

(That's a bit of an inside joke... I hope AC remembers)

You obviously haven't looked at my fb profile. Laura: "I could just hear Katie and Allison in my head, saying 'Go go go go go!' and 'DO IT!' " <3

I just did my W5D2 (the 8 5 8 one), and it was great! Fb, the inertia (stopping of inertia?) is definitely evident here. The first 8 was fabulous, and I was like, "ooooh I can't wait to talk about this." The second 8 was still good, but harder to get going. However, I'm nervous about D3-it's a full 20 jog. I mean, I know I can do it, and it probably won't be too difficult, but I think it's a mental thing. I like the IDEA of knowing I'll be walking. Oh, I don't have to jog this whole time, it's ok to walk in 6 minutes..or whatever. I guess I need to get over that, anyway.

Go everyone!
