Over on yogaferret's "for us ladies" thread many of us started talking about Diva cups (divacup.com) and other reusable menstrual products (keepers, etc). Turns out a few of us already use them and many more (10 at last count!) are in the process of making the switch-- and telling big tampon to go stuff themselves!
I started a poll to try to get a better count of those in the "Diva Club." Using alternative products can be lonely at times because we are trained to view our periods as dirty little secrets--it is hard to know what someone uses unless you ask or they bring it up!
I thought it would be good to open a new thread more focused on reusable products. If you have questions, concerns, exciting things to share related to all things menstrual, this is your thread. ;)
You may want to ask your doctor to refer you to an office that is exclusively OB/GYN, and let that office know ALL of your issues about getting a checkup (your unfortunate victimization, as well as your inexperience with exams). I am sure there will be a particular gynaecologist that they will recommend to you. I know that a lot of women go through similar ordeals, so they probably have someone around that is especially sensitive to these issues. If they don't ooh and aah about how great, gentle, and understanding this doctor is, ask your primary doctor to refer you to another office. It's really important to feel comfortable with this, and it is also important to get a checkup (and it will probably make you feel better about your health).
My Diva came in the mail today! I love ordering stuff and telling everyone here about it! It did not come with packing peanuts, but that's ok, because I am totally in LOVE with the pin!!!
I never would have thought I'd be this excited about menstrual products :P
...but that's ok, because I am totally in LOVE with the pin!!!
Others have commented about the pin. What does it look like???
OK, I need some help here. I don't want to find out the hard way that I am using this thing wrong. First, you are supposed to twist it to get it to pop open, and it is supposed to be easy to twist. It is very difficult for me to twist, no matter what I do. It says you are supposed to insert it horizontally (?), but as far as I know, there is only one direction to put it! So, am I doing something wrong? Second, is it supposed to feel flat after it's popped open?
I got my Diva Cup in the mail today too- I couldn't wait to tell the Divas! ;D (loser.)
It was the last day of my period and I practiced putting it in and taking it out in the shower. I think I'm going to cut that little piece off. It wasn't 100% perfect, but I know I'll get the hang of it. ;) I was telling someone about it after I ordered it and she said "that sounds disgusting!" Oh well. ;)
Oh, and mine wouldn't spin around either, but I could tell that it was open...I think. Hmm...maybe I should let someone with experience answer this one. ;)
Ok. After seeing that pin, I'm definitely convinced! Haha. I am totally going to buy one. I was going to wait until my tampons ran out, but I think I will give them to my friend, who by the way thought the diva cup sounded gross...
I was telling someone about it after I ordered it and she said "that sounds disgusting!" Oh well.
Anyway, I think she is another case of "being comfortable with what she already knows."
Thanks baypuppy! Yeah, there was definitely suction--it's good to know there's some indication of things being correct. I totally understand the whole plunger idea now :P
Hey, where'd you order it? (sorry if I missed that somewhere) I was going to order from amazon but, uh, want to make sure I get the pin. ::)
I am convinced- I want to get one! The part about only changing it at night and morning is what sold me.
I think it is a good idea for all women of child bearing age to get a check up no matter what. I think of it as kindof like going to the dentist, not fun, but important. When I started having sex I went to a Planned Parenthood Clinic. They give discounts to students & pretty sure they only have female doctors. Let them know it is your first exam & tell them about your super heavy periods, they may be able to help with that.
im going to order one when i get the money to. i always felt that the pads were just smaller diapers and i like tampons (use them all the time) but have always had to use super ones. so im probbably at risk for tss.
This is so cool! Count me as one of the converts too :)
I went down to the HFS this afternoon & bought myself a Diva Cup. Perfect timing too cuz when I got home, guess what showed up. Yup, my period & I am soooo excited about it! I'm glad that apstaats asked about the twisting because I couldn't turn it even a little. I could however, run my finger around the circumference of the Cup & feel that it had opened right.
Will wearing the cup help with cramps the way a tampon does?
Thank you so much for telling us about the Diva Cup :)
Love the pin. It's on one of my crocs :D
MY DIVA CUP ARRIVED TODAY!!!!! YAY!!!!!! :D
I must say...I love the pin.
baypuppy, you crack me up! I was thinking today how funny it is that I'm actually looking forward to getting my period! I feel kind of crazy!
Oh, you guys--you make me LMAO, too.
I feel so left out ;) but have enjoyed this thread immensely. Can't say that I want to "go back" to the good old days to join the Diva Club, however. Maybe I can be a mascot! ;D
I wonder if you can still get a pin somehow... I've been thinking that if there is ever a vegweb convention, we MUST wear our pins!
