Over on yogaferret's "for us ladies" thread many of us started talking about Diva cups (divacup.com) and other reusable menstrual products (keepers, etc). Turns out a few of us already use them and many more (10 at last count!) are in the process of making the switch-- and telling big tampon to go stuff themselves!
I started a poll to try to get a better count of those in the "Diva Club." Using alternative products can be lonely at times because we are trained to view our periods as dirty little secrets--it is hard to know what someone uses unless you ask or they bring it up!
I thought it would be good to open a new thread more focused on reusable products. If you have questions, concerns, exciting things to share related to all things menstrual, this is your thread. ;)
According to baypuppy, the size difference amounts to 1/8-inch, so the larger and more commonly found size shouldn't be a problem - especially since you'll have it for years.
Welcome. I'm glad you decided to decided to join the discussion.
Hello all you amazing women!
For the past two years I've been reading vegweb and enjoying all the wonderful recipes and discussions and have finally decided to join because of this post.
Several years ago I tried using Instead and had no luck whatsoever. After reading all of your posts I am convinced that I MUST buy the DivaCup. Not only does the pin look sweet, but I love how much better for the environment it is than pads and tampons. My only problem is that I'm not sure what size would be right for me. I'm 30 and have not had children. Hmmmm. I'm right on the border. Any suggesions or thoughts? I'd greatly appreciate it.
I am also 30 and have no children. I got the second model, and it works perfectly.
Thank you, thank you, humbolt_honey and apstaats! I'll go with the bigger size. I can't wait!
I have to admit (and this probably sounds silly) that after reading posts on vegweb for the past couple years all of you have reached what amounts to celebrity status in my mind. So to actually post something on here and have it answered by you" vegweb celebrities" gives me a bit of a thrill. I feel like I've joined a wonderful group of people united by their love of healthy food and compassion for animals and the earth. :)
Awww, that is really sweet! :)
I was wondering if anyone here has an IUD? After reading about the suction while removing the Diva I just keep picturing the IUD being sucked out with it. ::)I checked the web site and it says there is a rare chance of it dislodging the IUD and to use at ones own risk...is the suction really that strong? This would be the only downfall I can picture for myself, and I would love to make the switch.
I have one (IUD), and I haven't had any problems so far. I heard that same thing, and it freaked me out a little bit... But I feel very confident using baypuppy's pinch and twist method. It breaks the seal very easily without the "plunging" thing!
Thank you Apstaats and Baypuppy, sounds like it won't be a problem. Funny, never thought I would look forward to my period....but....can't wait to compare.
These cups are darn painful during the removal process if you yank without breaking the suction. So if you do get one, don't ever continue to tug when you feel the suction. Gently pinch the bottom to break the seal. I then can just remove mine and there is no suction what so ever.
err...I kinda just want this thread to die so it doesn't keep piping up in my new message thing, but here I am posting on it again. ::) I went to look for diva cups at my local wild oats...they didn't have any. but they did have glad rags for a wopping 30+ each! Thats so dumb! Anyways, I cant find it at TJS either...where else should I look. The company website specifically says to shop locally if at all possible.I dont think tehre is a whole foods here in tucson?....
You can search by zip code on the company's website.
I got mine on ebay, brand new in the box, for $23.00 and free shipping. I figured thats probably 2 months worth of tampons and liners, not bad.
Yeah, if you can't find one in a store in your area, you can always order online. It is justified, yes you are paying to have it shipped and using energy associated with that, but you are saving money and landfill space!
(I forgot to post this over the weekend.)
Here are some things I learned for my own usage.
Insertion: Uh, only one way to say this... spread legs & knees while squatting... insert, stand slighty... push kness together and push diva cup back toward tail bone. I can only place it properly when i push my knees back together.
Also diva MUST be up/past/behind pubic bone.
Being sure it's opened: It didn't the first time. >:( I found the spinning thing is key. After inserting, I squat and push it out a bit (BM style) and swipe my finger around the bottom of the cup somewhat spinning it. I think the pushing it out part is what works and not the finger swipe. But I'll need more practice.
Stem: It tickles me a bit (i.e. if I'm standing and tilt my pelvis) but I will not be cutting it off just yet.
Removal: Squat (Looooow!). Bear down (BM style, again) I stick one finger waaaay up and press against the side and break the suction (which is frigging strong!!) and then pinch the base and twist and pull.
The entire time I was thinking of baypuppy's comment about "digging around in your vagina" because you DO have to really get in there. I took me time to do all these gymnastics. I had to take my pants completely off each time. ::) But unlike tampons it was just once in the AM and once in the PM. For now, I would NOT do it at a public restroom. I would just wait.
I only had a two day period since it was the first since my emergency operation.... it was the first time in my whole life I was dissapointed when my period ended. I wanted to keep using it to get it right.
Also it was GREAT to know exactly how much flow there was entirely. I can tell my doctor when I see her next week. I know I will get the hang of it and be popping it in and out in bathroom stalls at the grocery store. But for now I just have to take my time. ;D
Jennifer, Thanks for sharing!!! :) I am still practicing, although it is getting easier. I'm not quite ready for public restrooms either! I'm hoping I can get this down without squatting so low!
I still don't think I'm putting it in correctly, I will try your technique. I think the problem I was having is that it was not opened so that's why it was moving so far up. Once the diva cup is in, does the stem stick out any? Is it visible at all? ???
Once the diva cup is in, does the stem stick out any? Is it visible at all? ???
Stick out? Not for me. In fact it's FAR up. That's why I'm not cutting it off... it's not that I use it to pull it out but I sort of do "find it" and orient myself that way...
I can't remember exactly right now, but i do think it was up past my pubic pone.
Try the pushing out thing and then try to turn it slightly maybe that will get it to open?
I'm not sure i'll ever be ready for public restrooms! LOL
I found that when inserting you really DO push it back toward your tailbone... horizontally (like the instructions say) not up and in like a tampon.
I got my pins in the mail today!!! :D And of course, since this is the coolest company in the world (except for Larabar, naturally), they sent me more than I asked them for! So... I have 12 now, and only 4 people have asked me to send them one. I have no problem putting Diva pins all over my belongings, but I would still be happy to send one or two to anyone for any reason! Just let me know.
jenniferhughes- does bm stand for "baby-making"???
lol. i'm usually pretty good at finding out acronyms...
