Hair and nails?

Since my return to vegetaria I notice my hair and nails grow faster and are stronger than they ever have been. I've never been able to let my nails grow because they would bend, and they grew soooo slowly. Now they grow like mad! Has anyone else noticed this? Or would it be that my return to vegetaria has also coincided with the runup to menopause--which hasn't started but I have all the "fun" symptoms--and this is partly hormonal?
Any feedback, ladies?

My hair grows like a weed (gone from chin length to mid-back in a little over 1 year) and my nails are very strong, something that is an anomaly in my family (kid sis is mostly-veg but she's wired like a ferret and picks them).  This directly counters the lecture I got at 17 when I first tried to be a veg and my mom sat me down and explained all of the horrible things that were going to happen to my body if I didn't eat meat.  ::)

I do shed an enormous amount; possibly more than my dog...OK maybe not, but while she's got me beat in quantity, I got it with length and annoying frequency.  But there doesn't appear to be any thinning.

yeah, my hair and nails grow really fast, really, like you described...ear length to well below shoulder in 8 months
and,
I've gone through early menopause (trying to reverse it with treatment)--but my doctor also attributes the later to my strenuous running habits

Not so much for me... :-\  ;D

Yes, funny you should mention this. I have recently noticed that both my hair and nails, which once grew at a ridiculous rate when I was young and then stopped growing so much about six years ago, have once again started growing really, really fast.

My hair now reaches the middle of my back, which I didn't think would ever happen again. I've always really liked having long hair, so it's just another good reason for me to stay vegan.

Hey, bald is in! You just don't have to shave it. My DH lost his hair at about age 25...I tell him he's sexier topless!

I think my hair and nails are growing faster too.  I had my hair trimmed in mid-March and I already need another trim badly.  Before I could go almost five months before I really needed a trim.

That's cute!  ;)
Forgive my temporary regression in maturity, but...bald guys can be hot! Check out Yul Brenner sometime in The Ten Commandments. "So let it be written, so let it be done!" (Okeedokee, I'm going to stop myself right here, before I digress further, and add any more of my usual useless comments that I'm sure no one cares to hear...)

Hey, Yul Brynner was my first love at about age 6...that sexy braid! His mother was evidently from Outer Mongolia. He seldom smiled on camera, because (and I quote) "my smile isn't exotic." Goodness.
When I outgrew YB it was on to Tony Curtis...those driving gloves and the Ferrari...it was quite a shock to see him in colour for the first time on DVD and discover he had blue eyes!

Okay, now you're becoming co-dependent in my addiction to digression...

Don't get me started on classic movies/actors...

I can't believe Yul Brenner thought his smile wasn't exotic!

I had a big time crush on Tony Curtis when I was a little kid, too! When Spartacus came on...I was riveted to the TV. My mom used to make fun of his thick Bronx accent (which is funny, because she still retained her accent from Queens/Brooklyn), but that didn't bother me none! At the time, I thought he looked like a Greek God.

I've always had thin hair, and I still have it. But it falls out if I don't eat right (not due to vegan diet but crappy diet). I've always had thin bendy nails and they are still like that.

Guess it didn't change much.

My hair and nails grow out-of control. Unfortunately, I like them both quite short (it's another of my idiosyncracies) - so I'm constantly trimming.

I agree about the "topless"  ;) thing.

As they say in Fiddler on the Roof - "If you want hair, marry a monkey!"  ;D

I've got strong nails and fast-growing hair, too.

Yes, bald is very sexy. Grrrr...

Not so much Greek as Hungarian. He was the child of Hungarian Jewish immigrants and his real name was Bernhard Schwartz! He was also Shelley Winters' (aka Shirley Schrifft) first cousin! I love the fact that there are "inside jokes" in a lot of his movies about his name and origin...in one episode of the Persuaders "Danny" passes himself off as a businessman named Bernie Schwartz, in another he actually dresses in drag as his Aunt Sadie, etc.
I loooove independent cinema, cinema history, trivia etc. If I had it to do all over again I'd be a scriptwriter and singlehandedly lift us out of the age of the action film and the remake! As Michael Caine (Maurice Mickelewhite just doesn't have the same ring, does it?) put it, "Anyone can remake a disaster and improve it, but how can you remake a success and have anything but a disaster?"
But I, like you, digress.... :D

Those are some fun facts! I never knew that he was related to Shelley! (I liked her in A Place in the Sun--I felt bad for her! Monty was awful to her--but I still love him! Anyway, who could turn down Liz?) I like movie/actor trivia, too. I don't know if there is a better resource out there, but I'm always on IMDB (Internet Movie Database) checking out facts about different actors in the movies I watch. It sort of becomes a sickness with me (kind of like digressing), and sometimes I have to check myself so I don 't wile away too many hours doing it.

I really, really like that quote by "Mr. Mickelewhite." My biggest problem with movies today is that they are almost 99% rehash. My main criteria in a movie is that it has originality. And that doesn't happen much anymore. I didn't realize it, until I started watching many classic and foreign movies starting in the late 90's. Once you see enough of them, you start recognizing the formulas in contemporary films almost immediately. I've thought about screen writing, too, but I've already got a ton of writing projects that I never get finished!

Speaking of action films, I find that lately, my mind completely wanders during them, and I have to ask my husband (after the chase scene or whatever) what just happened.

BTW, Dave, You're pic is a bit obscured (red lighting and all), but I'm sure you're just as fabulous on the outside as I know you are on the inside.  :) That's the great thing about us vegans--our healthy insides shine outwards--hee!

I became vegan last July.  Since last year, my hair has grown 9 inches - and no split ends!  During my omni days, my hair grew a couple of inches a year.

OK so I'm not wierd...OK, well--yeah, I am weird; ;D ;D ;D :D :D

any idea what it means when your hair DOESN'T grow? I haven't eaten red meat for 5 years, been a vegetarian for 3, and have been 95% vegan for the last 5 months and my hair still does not grow. i think i eat pretty darn good!

It means you're not weird enough!  :D

Other than that, I'm not sure.  I went straight from omni to vegan.
