IBS =[

Jessica

Mine is not triggered so much by food as by emotions and stress, although I know there are times when foods do it I have never pin pointed them directly... Poohbear posted a great ibs cereal to eat in the morning that really seems to help her and lots of other ibs sufferers.

Just wondering, are you vegan or ovo-lacto vegetarian?

I'm dealing with Runners' Colitis at this time, which they're not 100% sure about, but seems to be a type of IBS. I still have a few more tests to go through (the pill cam is next!). My doc and I also had the talk about foods they typically tell patients to steer clear of. It's not too bad, you know, just everything we eat. It's sort of depressing. I want to take care of my body, and my doc is telling me I should be eating more of a shitty American diet. So sad. Keep us informed if you find out what works for you. Right now I'm just on a ton of Lomotil a day, and we're talking about moving up to deodorized tincture of opium in the future.

really good digestive enzymes, Hydrochloric acid tablets and good probiotics.  Just experiment with the foods that act the worst, and take it easy on those for awhile.  I think wheat is the biggest culprit usually, and dairy.

What seems to cause tons of issues for me are high fiber foods.... so my morning oatmeal is now out. I can handle whole rice, but not cream of rice. But yeah, pretty much all the 'safe' 'foods' are those things that have been so over processed it should be a crime to actually call them food.

eta: here's a link to the thread I started, there's some good links in there that could help you out.

my friend has this, he says he eats more raw food and the same thing. So he will eat 2 bananas and then wait a little if he wants someting different. He has huge anxiety so he always gets IBS. Or the same nuts or seeds.

but he says its been much better eating a lot of the same thing, he only eats one cooked meal and keeps it simple with 1 or 2 vegetables, beans or tofu and what ever else.

So you're saying that his symptoms are better when eating raw? I've always guessed it would be the opposite, thus I've never tried it. Thanks for this tip, since I'm willing to try anything! I'll try to incorporate more raw.

everyone is different, but he finds it better, he eats mostly fruits raw and carrots from what ive seen lately.
He even talked with his doctor and asked advice on it and the doctor encouraged him to try it.

As i said, do get the same item dont mix so much. his was a big him for him.

If you haven't already I highly recommend getting a stool culture from a real parasitology lab (regular labs miss parasites and yeast all the time, did for me. I recommend the Parasitology Research Center in AZ..you mail in the sample). "IBS" just means "your bowels are irritated, we don't know why and there is no cure". BS. I had bowel problems for 1.5 years. My Dr was about to diagnose me with IBS and say live with it, but decided to get a stool culture. I had the parasite blastocystis hominis and yeast overgrowth. Diets (candida, etc) and natural cures did nothing. I finally took Alinia for the parasite but the yeast was harder to get: 2 rounds of Nystatin and 1 round of Diflucan. I have been completely well for a year now.

My triggers are high emotions and dairy.  Thus I try to live my life on more of an even keel emotionally.  Learn some ways to help yourself be calm and collected.  Eliminate sources of anger and fighting in your life.

I also went vegan 7+ years ago and have been pretty darn good since.  Fiber doesn't bother me but milk, cheese and dairy byproducts were murder.

I believe everyone is different so try an elimination diet to find out what is setting you off.  Be sure you keep a food log and note how you're feeling and what emotional wave you're riding.

I feel your pain! I was diagnosed with IBS and acid reflux when I was 12. My aunt, grandma, cousin, and mom all have Crohns. I looked up Crohns recently and talked to my doctor, and it sounds like THAT is what I have. I have to keep a food diary, eat zero gluten, soy, and dairy and then see a gastro-doctor-person. lol FUUNN. My favorite foods are mac and cheese and pasta things...Today's my first day going gluten free and I don't know what to cook!  :-\

Yeatsa...you can have Crohn's and IBS together.  I do, and let me tell you, it's a pain in the ass..literally.  I don't have a problem with soy or gluten luckily.  Have you tried spelt pasta?  Maybe you can still make mac & cheese but in a different way.  Can you find rice milk cheeze near you?

So sorry emotions trigger the problems. I thought I was crazy but as soon as I flip out or get scared about something I'm in the bathroom all night...At least I'm not the only one! Do you do yoga or something to help with your emotions?

Sorry you have them both. I didn't know that was possible. I'll probably find out when I go to the gastro-something doctor in a month.

Ooh good idea!! I bought some rice pasta at Trader Joes today. So far, rice and tummy are friends. lol Does spelt taste better than rice? Is rice cheese really good? I tried Daiya and it made me almost barf on the first bite.

I bought a bag of spelt pasta but have never made anything with it.  So I can't give you any feed back on it.  I've only eaten the rice cheeze on a cracker with mustard and a pickle slice.  It tasted fine but since it was masked with other flavors I can't vouche for it on its own.

Emotions trigger my IBS too.  I usually try to stop and meditate/deep breathe for a few minutes when I feel my emotional state going haywire to get it under control.

I was diagnosed with "IBS" many years ago due to painful constipation and alternating episodes of explosive diarrhea.  I had constant cramping tight pain in my abdomen.  Sometimes the pain would get so bad I would vomit or double over and faint.  I had every test out there, from sigmoidoscopy to ultrasounds and cat scans and upper endoscopy with biopsy to check for celiac (I also had terrible nausua all the time) to barium enemas and the list goes on.  All tests were normal.  I was labeled with IBS but i just knew there was something more, that this was a blanket diagnosis.  It totally interfered with my life.  Then four years into it my periods became excrutiating.  Eventually a gynecologist did a laparoscopy to look inside my abdominal/pelvic area and found extensive endometriosis, old scarring as well as new, all over my colon, one ovary, outside of uterus, on bladder.  I had been dismissed for years as having IBS and being easily "stressed" and despite changing my diet and taking all the usual meds and supplements they recommended it did nothing. I used to get low grade fevers and this was even discovered on many of my visits to the ER but I was still dismissed.  Finally with the lap I knew why I was in so much pain.  Unfortunately I ended up with a total hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries at age 33 that turned my life upside down.  I wish someone would have mentioned sooner that my pain and cramping and digestive problems were hormone and reproductive related.  I know there are a zillion reasons for digestive bowel related issues but I just wanted to share that this is another avenue to explore for those as yet undiagnosed or dismissed and struggling.

Oh NB I'm so sorry! I never knew those problems could cause those symptoms! You're a strong woman <3

Thanks!  I didnt either and had never heard of endometriosis until a coworker who had it mentioned my symptoms were so much like hers.  She had digestive issues that correlated to her hormone cycle also.  When I saw the gynecologist I then mentioned it and he thought that might be a possibility.  The coworker was correct.  Amazing that after all those years and specialists and tests it was a nonmedical coworker that sort of indirectly diagnosed me.  That's the power of communication!

I hope you get your IBS/Crohns under control soon!  I dont have any advice re diet as my body functions much much better on a high fiber whole foods vegan diet than it did on the years of eating a low residue diet. I guess I am fortunate.  I could never tolerate milk products or fatty meats back then either.  For so long I lived on the BRAT diet.  I had to cook all my vegetables.

As much hell as i went through with surgical menopause and losing my parts, I do have to admit that my digestive issues improved enormously once the endometroisis was gone (although I still had to have one more laparscopy one year post hysterectomy/removal of both ovaries to clean out some remaining endometriosis and scar tissue) and I finally after three years post surgical menopause got my hormone mess straightened out.  I also stopped taking all antidepressants which I had been on for years and which caused more horrid side effects than did anything to help.  I have been drug free (except for my hormone patch and thyroid meds) for 3 years now and also off pain meds for that long now too.  My body is highly sensitive to chemicals and drugs.  I still do have some bloating issues and wonder if there isnt some food that I am sensitive too but at least the pain and irregular bowel stuff is gone.  Good luck with everything!
