Kidney Stones

I just wondered if anyone here has dealt with kidney stones since going vegan. Specifically, calcium oxalate stones.

I'm not strictly vegan (eat cheese) but I did have a kidney stone a little over 1 year ago. Horribly painful and yes, mine was also calcium oxalate. I was supposed to go see a nutritionist to talk about preventing them, but I never did make it in and I haven't had one since. I was told to drink a glass of orange juice daily and have been doing that.

I haven't had them (yet..) but my friend has kidney stones and the foods his doctor told him to stay away from are some of my favorite vegan foods: nuts, spinach, okra, other delicious healthy greens. Citrus is supposed to help, as long as you don't eat the rinds. My friend said that if you haven't gotten a kidney stone by your 20s you probably won't get them later in life, some people just don't process oxalate well.

Yeah....this  is what bothers me.  I left veganism for a bit because trying to do a gluten-free, soy-free, low oxalate, low iodine vegan diet healthfully while I was practically comatose from not being allowed to take my synthroid proved to be too much to handle...(please don't judge, I had to make a hard decision and I had to go with what was easiest for me on this one-cancer sucks. I don't recommend it. )but I want to get back to being vegan, because my ethics are the same and I do believe it's healthier.  I just want to make sure I don't get anymore kidney stones because it was the most painful experience of my life.  I'd rather have neck surgery again!
