The official menstruation thread

This is a place to talk about our periods! Not just diva cup related, but whatever we'd like to discuss/get help with.

My period recently switched from being towards the beginning of the month, to the end. I hope it stays semi-constant (schedule-wise). When I was younger, I had some cramps, then I was on b.c pills for about 4-5 years, and didn't really have cramps, I've been off the pill for about two years now, and I have pretty bad cramps the first couple of days/nights. They were HORRIBLE this morning.

I'm REALLY wondering what I'm going to do when we run out of our bottle of Tylenol. Tylenol stops my cramps pretty quickly. By "cramps," I mean the horrible stomach/back pain, the feeling like I always have to poop, the flushed feeling, etc. Before I've taken Tylenol it doesn't really seem to matter how I'm lying/sitting/standing...anything. I know yoga helps some people...I don't know if it helps me or not..b/c I don't think I've been able to force myself to do it when in pain. But, I can't always stop and do some yoga....I don't drink tea..I'm just not wanting to buy more drugs.

Anyway, let's discuss!

Ok, I've heard of the diva cup...but I'm not exactly sure what it's all about.  Anyone care to share?

Also, I've only had 1 period in the last year.  My doctor keeps telling me that it's because I'm vegan and don't get enough fat or protein in my diet.  I keep a food journal now so I can prove that I'm eating well, and I recently switched doc's so I'm getting a second opinion in about a week.  I'm not underweight or anything (5'4", 125 lbs)...so I just d/k

There are WAY more issues to amenorrohea (no periods) than just diet. Not least, family history. If your mom had trouble getting pregnant/carrying to term, for example, it could indicate a genetic issue. Other than that, I know female athletes sometimes have issues...or stress..or other hormonal disorders.

Do get a second opinion, including hormonal levels testing. And a third, if needed.

Q. What's the difference between God and a doctor?
A. God doesn't go around acting like a doctor.

Hey Ally--nice thread! This one is sure to be very popular!!

I know you said yoga's not always an option but have you tried just doing childs pose? It's simple and may be helpful :)

OK--this one is going to sound weird but I've read that drinking pickle juice can also help relieve cramps--so I guess if you like pickles it can't be too bad *lol*

Hey Icephrosty! There's a whole thread on the Diva Cup here, it will give you more info than you will ever need *lol*

I too am not having periods--however in my case it is almost asuredly from ED/atheletic tri-fecta reasons. Over the past 5 months I have spotted or had 1 day periods but this month...absolutly nothing. I imagine it is from my month long raw detox, so perhaps next month it will drop on by to say hi.

I'm so totally with you on the cramps. Can't fix 'em.

I only get a period every other month though. It's always been like that since the beginning of me getting periods. My friends think there's something wrong. Opinions?

For some reason, that pose reminds of the "we're not worthy" scene from Wayne's World.

I swear by taking/eating extra calcium during the cramping time. It does help!!! I think I'm on week seven or so.... still no period. But plenty of cramps!! I believe though this is due to my hormonal IUD/IUC, as ammenorhea is a possible side effect. I was hoping that'd also mean a lack of cramps....but no dice thus far!!

i've heard that cutting back on soy before your period helps, but i havent tried it.  yoga poses work for me.  when i have cramps, i'll sleep with a BIG pillow under my knees/shins/feet to raise them.  that helps right away.  also drinking feverfew tea.  i dont know if you can buy it, but i grow it and that helps out a lot too.  i just put feverfew in hot water with a tea bag and agave.  its super bitter, so you have to put something else in the water.

mine starts tomorrow.  and my boobs are so swollen that i figure i'm a full cup size bigger than normal.  and ouch!

although, this month, my face didn't break out, which is awesome.  i think i'll take bigger boobs over skin problems any day.

cramps for me are only really bad during the first one or two days.  and i'm like clockwork because of my bc.  i like knowing when it's going to happen, so there's no possible accident factor.

anyway, no one's explained the diva cup yet.  i have no idea what it is.

i went to the website.  seems...  interesting.  and possibly uncomfortable.  but it might be worth buying ones, as tampons sometimes give me yeast infections (though it's been awhile since this has happened).

hm.

I'm going off bc when I finish this pack (week and a half left).  I started bc because of bad periods, so I'm scared, but after 4 years I just don't like the idea of it anymore.  I eat a lot healthier now than I did when I started bc, so hopefully my uterus doesn't hate me so much now.  And I'll get to officially join the diva club!  ;)b

yeah, i totally thought it was going to be super uncomfortable, like worse than tampons. BUT. You literally cannot feel it. It is amazing!! As some people know on here, I have quite severe endometriosis, and periods for me are like Hell on Earth. I cannot wait to (hopefully!!) pop some babies out, and get my uterus out of this body!! The Diva cup makes my period easier. SOOOOO much easier. And once you get past the folding and inserting and getting it to "pop" open, it's a breeze, even when you're half asleep at 2am. You must try it, MUST!

i cant/wont use tampons.  they hurt, theyre dry, and blegh.  i hate them.  but a diva on the other hand, i like it.  you dont feel it at all, it moves with you, its much better.  and cheaper.

just to let you all know.  i thought this was called the official masturbation thread.  i thought that maybe we have gone too far.  but alas.  just about the monthly bloooods.

Agree second opinion.  I am 5'5" or so and about that weight sometimes less and I still get  me periods.

Mine are always unscheduled. Sometimes I get signs, sometimes I don't.  I like the times that I don't because they are usually pretty easy ones, but some give me notice two wks in advance of moodiness that I don't even realize until the pain starts.  Ugh, I never had pds this bad before depo.

And since were being open about this and there is a gross topic thread.  What is "considered" normal when the blood comes out? Should it be dark in color like it is old or bright red?  I get both and lots of clots, usually that is when I have the worst pain, the clots are so painful.  Hopefully dh is around and he rubs this spot really low on my back and it feels so much better.

Cali, I hope your surgery goes well.  Probably not the normal thing to say, but I wish I could have mine removed, it is faulty and I don't need it.

i may.  it's too late for this month, so i have 3 more weeks to think it over (to allow for shipping, just in case).  i didn't realize so many people used it!  it would certainly cut down on my monthly tampon costs...  guh.  i mean, you can use them for like...ever, right?  until i turn 30 i mean.
