Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

I have that one right now too but it's really gritty. Before this, I had Nutivia protein+fiber powder and that blended easier. Do you find it gritty at all?

Yes, actually. It's my first time buying/using it so I just figured all of them were like that. I don't really find it offputting, because I usually just put a couple pinches of the stuff into my smoothie.

I usually put 3 rounded teaspoons in mine so it gets a bit chewy. I've been thinking of adding hemp oil into my smoothies instead of the powder.

Chewy smoothies?  :o

Haha, yepp! It reminds me of when I use berries in my smoothies and there's a bunch of seeds to kind of chew on but this time it's from the hemp. Normally I would just drink it but when there's so much seed in it I'm kind of forced to chew on them.

Mine doesn't get chewy, just slightly grainy or gritty. I've tried adding the oil and it imparts a very unwelcome earthy flavor. I'll take the grittiness any day.

How is everybody doing?

I made a bottle of carrot-beet-apple-ginger juice, a bottle of celery-serrano juice, and had a nice watercress and strawberry salad for lunch.  Now I'm going to go make some raw veg burgers from the pulp I saved from the juicer.  I'm planning a 3-day juice cleanse after the new year.

And so it begins....day1, juice detox.  I have 5 pounds of carrots, 3 pounds of apples and I've got to get beets on my way home today.  I hope my ratty little juicer is up to it.

Detox, day 2.....I feel crappy, but it is to be expected.  My juicer churned it out like a champion yesterday...only it isn't.  It even handled the ginger root without blowing a gasket.  The real torture of yesterday was fixing my daughter gumbo and not being able to even taste it.  It smelled so good.

Edit: 1-5-11
Detox, day 3: today it's smooth sailing.  I'm not hungry, the crappiness is over, and I feel great!  Tomorrow I'll transition back to high raw.  I forgot to weigh in at the beginning, but I know I've dropped weight because I've already gone down a notch on my belt.  Probably mostly water.

Way to go, Storm! Not sure if you're aware of this but I've read that you shouldn't drink beet juice alone. I'll try to find the articles I've read on it.

Anyway, I see lots of fruit salad in my future!

Yes, I'm aware and I would never drink it straight anyway, it's too "earthy" on its own....at least to me.  I generally blend 4 parts carrot: 2 parts apple: 1 part beet...

Fruit salad sounds like a plan.  After 3 days of juice, fruit will be a welcome change.

Hey Storm! I'm doing pretty good these days. Been doing all raw until supper time since the new year and it feels great. Hoping to transition into eating high raw in the coming weeks and cleansing my body of some of all this alcohol and processed crap I put it in the last two weeks of 2010. :)

@Storm you go on with your bad self :) You can totally do it!
I went out and bought a bunch of apples, carrots, and a bunch of beets to do juices as well, kinda weird that we had the same idea. :P

I've gone back to my raw diet lifestyle and I feel awesome. I been 90% raw since the beginning of the year, I'm even posting youtube vids about it, I've lost 6lbs in 9 days so far. Feeling awesome, just so high off the living foods. I even kicked my own butt into redoing my website.

to top all that off, I got a new job :) I take care of the mentally retarded, I used to do the same thing about 4 years ago and loved it. with my back though its a little hard, but I get to sit down most of the time so its working so far.

2011 is going to be my year, financial stability, I'm going to lose ATLEAST 60lbs, I'm even going to save up the money for our big California move, because frankly I'm sick and @#^$@ tired of the snow ;)

I hope you guys are having a great year so far.

@ Secondbase  hells yeah you can do it! keep us updated :D

Awesome, secondbase and faylinameir!  I'm cruising at about 90+ myself....had to have my coffee back.  I'm going to go type you into youtube, fay, and see if I can find your vids!

Raw totally rocks! ;)b

Hi Guys!!!
Some of you probably saw this on my FB but I did a 5 day juice fast (I followed the recipes of an experienced juicer) using my Vitamix. I felt extremely awesome the whole time, and have ever since. I am now eating again, but incorporating raw smoothies into my regular diet and eating far less processed crap. The one concern i have is that I hardly popped at all on the 5 day thing, and still really haven't had a good normal one since. ???? And I am a really good pooper usually!

I have to say that the 5 days changed my life. I mean, I knew it was better for you, but actually doing it and feeling the difference was like a slap in the face. I really indulged over the holidays and needed a change. this is it!!!
What does high raw mean, anyway?

about beets....i learned that if your pee turns red when you have them, it can mean that your Ph level is off.....mine didn't turn red at all....I had a couple days of beet juice (not alone but mixed with lots of other stuff).

I will be checking this thread more often now. This is actually my first time! yay for you guys!!!

L2A, high five for the five day juice fast!  That's awesome!  I did 3+ and at the end of day 4, I transitioned back to reasonably high raw with some gazpacho.

I think high raw is generally considered to be 100% raw.  I can do it for a while, but I generally end up sliding back a bit because I like my coffee and I like the convenience of bottled salad dressings.

Wouldn't high raw be something like 75-90% raw?  100% raw seems like it would just be...raw.  ???

Personally, I consider "high raw" to mean that a person is consuming the vast majority of their food in raw form - but some cooked foods are still included.

It all depends on your view point.  Typically, at least 75% of one's diet must be living/raw to be considered a "raw foodist" (not that the label matters).  When I'm in the 80% range I do not consider myself to be on high raw, it's simply my normal "lifestyle".  But to someone who typically eats below 75% raw,  anything above 75% is probably high raw.  You could probably ask 10 raw foodists and get 10 different answers.  For me, it is 100% or damn close to it.  I guess it's all relative.

Ha, ha...I just went to a raw forum to the "what exactly is high raw" thread, and pretty much everybody had a different answer.   :D

ugh I've seen soooo many vids and blog posts n such on the topic of "what percent is raw" my friend Kevin Gianni on youtube even did a video about it. I think its just silly how most people tend to get caught up on labels. But I digress...
I would say if you asked me raw is 75% or more. But if you also asked me I'd tell you if you're concerned about labels you're doing it all wrong ;) I get people asking me "what are you?" and my response is either "I am a meat popscile" (anyone else get that reference or am I a dork? :P ) , "human" , or "myself". Otherwise I feel the need to divulge my last 2 years of experiments on the veg/vegan/raw/ raw vegan/ omni/ pesci/ fruit/ flex  lifestyles which usually leads to people staring me like this like:  :o  :-X
