Raw Chit-Chat!
Hi everyone!
I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!
I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?
Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?
OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Is the nutmilk bag reusable? I just use a fine mesh strainer for my almond milk....

yep nutmilk bags are reuseable and will last quiet awhile if you take care of them. Personally I just use flour sacks, they work just like nutmilk bags and are a heck of a lot cheaper, just pull up the ends and twist once or twice, same thing.

I made raw spicy french "fries" today, omg so yummers! :)>>> <3 Also made a raw pineapple and jicama salad w/lime juice. Was spicy, sweet, sour, and savory all at the same time! Hubs didn't like it though :-\
I was wondering the same thing. Also, what is the difference between cheesecloth and nut milk bags?
Cheesecloth is just a cloth with no shape... A nut milk bag (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Nut-Milk-Bag--New-Improved/dp/B00158U8DU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305778117&sr=8-1) is a bag that fits easily into a pitcher or cup or whatever, which is super convenient for straining. The incredibly fine mesh fabric makes it really easy to strain out as much pulp as possible. (And the pulp is great for raw cheesecakes, since it's basically like the finest, smoothest ground nuts you can make!)
I have had mine for over a year & it's still in great shape. A little stained from when I've made chocolate milk, but I love it!
I am making Ani Phyo's recipe for Save the Salmon Patties for dinner tonight! It uses the pulp of juiced carrots + a sunflower seed & dill cheeze as the base, along with some kelp or dulse, sea salt, and minced onion. It was actually really easy to put together, and the raw mix tastes great! I have the patties in the dehydrator now, where they're supposed to warm for a few hours & form a bit of a crust on the outside. The book suggests serving them with an almond-based hollandaise sauce, but I don't feel like making that (plus, I don't like eating such a large helping of fat in one meal), so I'm just having them plain with a big salad. The flavor is really vibrant, so I doubt I will miss the sauce!
BTW, how do you guys pronounce "dulse"? In my head I have always thought it was "dul-say," but the other day I heard some chef call it "duls" (no "ay" sound) on a YouTube video. So now I'm curious!
I say "duls."

I also say "duls".
I'm juice fasting this week. I've been slowly sliding backwards on my raw and it's time to turn that around.

I'm juice fasting this week too. HOLLA!
I can't remember if any of you have talked about mesquite... If you've tried it, do you like it? I am not a huge "superfood" shopper since I'm kinda po', but I really want to try mesquite because I love maca & lucuma, and I'm looking to spice up my smoothies.
I bought some mesquite a couple of months ago, but still haven't used it. Time to open it up and give it a try....I'll report back.
Awesome! I'm excited to hear. I always think of mesquite smoke or hickory chips when I see "mesquite" in a recipe, but I know that it supposedly has a caramel-like flavor... Seems like it would be a tasty addition to smoothies & desserts!
Did a first juice fast for 48hrs. Went smoothly.
Does anyone else have non electric kitchen equipment?
I snagged a zassenhouse food mill of ebay and considering
the GSI man powered blender.
Oka-nas at a pint of blueberries, guess whos poo was blue?
Okay, so here is my assessment of mesquite powder.... BLECH! http://bestsmileys.com/sick/7.gif
The smell was really odd and reminded me of the spices from a package of ramen noodles. It has a mild sweetness to it but also tasted kind of like what I'd expect burnt cardboard to taste like. So, I think you can safely say I'm not a fan.

Nothing exciting but for the longest time I was using a hand juicer to juice citrus. Then it broke and now I don't really have anything. Mine">http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-CLR-GLASS-HAND-JUICER-W-OFFSET-HANDLE-SPOUT-... looked like this but with a bigger cup and the top actually fit it.
Weird, Storm! Thanks for the review! I won't rush into buying any now. :)
I'm eating tons of salad lately, especially since I've been able to harvest some of the food from my garden already. I love this time of the year! My grocery store has also started selling local microgreens which I picked up to try, they're a very nice addition to my salad. I've also been putting mashed avocado on top of it.
How's everyone doing?
i've been raw 100% for almost 3 months again, now, but i've been a-stressin' about money and therefore not eating enough. i need to quickly decide which is worse for my health, stress of having not enough money or eating cooked food. i really want to stay raw.
Impressive on the 3 months Hespy, but I'm sorry you're having to make that choice about your diet.
I keep bouncing up and down on raw and my arthritis has flared because of it so I'm gearing up to hit 100% for the rest of July, or damn close to it.
