Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Awesome, secondbase and faylinameir!  I'm cruising at about 90+ myself....had to have my coffee back.  I'm going to go type you into youtube, fay, and see if I can find your vids!

Raw totally rocks! ;)b

Hi Guys!!!
Some of you probably saw this on my FB but I did a 5 day juice fast (I followed the recipes of an experienced juicer) using my Vitamix. I felt extremely awesome the whole time, and have ever since. I am now eating again, but incorporating raw smoothies into my regular diet and eating far less processed crap. The one concern i have is that I hardly popped at all on the 5 day thing, and still really haven't had a good normal one since. ???? And I am a really good pooper usually!

I have to say that the 5 days changed my life. I mean, I knew it was better for you, but actually doing it and feeling the difference was like a slap in the face. I really indulged over the holidays and needed a change. this is it!!!
What does high raw mean, anyway?

about beets....i learned that if your pee turns red when you have them, it can mean that your Ph level is off.....mine didn't turn red at all....I had a couple days of beet juice (not alone but mixed with lots of other stuff).

I will be checking this thread more often now. This is actually my first time! yay for you guys!!!

L2A, high five for the five day juice fast!  That's awesome!  I did 3+ and at the end of day 4, I transitioned back to reasonably high raw with some gazpacho.

I think high raw is generally considered to be 100% raw.  I can do it for a while, but I generally end up sliding back a bit because I like my coffee and I like the convenience of bottled salad dressings.

Wouldn't high raw be something like 75-90% raw?  100% raw seems like it would just be...raw.  ???

Personally, I consider "high raw" to mean that a person is consuming the vast majority of their food in raw form - but some cooked foods are still included.

It all depends on your view point.  Typically, at least 75% of one's diet must be living/raw to be considered a "raw foodist" (not that the label matters).  When I'm in the 80% range I do not consider myself to be on high raw, it's simply my normal "lifestyle".  But to someone who typically eats below 75% raw,  anything above 75% is probably high raw.  You could probably ask 10 raw foodists and get 10 different answers.  For me, it is 100% or damn close to it.  I guess it's all relative.

Ha, ha...I just went to a raw forum to the "what exactly is high raw" thread, and pretty much everybody had a different answer.   :D

ugh I've seen soooo many vids and blog posts n such on the topic of "what percent is raw" my friend Kevin Gianni on youtube even did a video about it. I think its just silly how most people tend to get caught up on labels. But I digress...
I would say if you asked me raw is 75% or more. But if you also asked me I'd tell you if you're concerned about labels you're doing it all wrong ;) I get people asking me "what are you?" and my response is either "I am a meat popscile" (anyone else get that reference or am I a dork? :P ) , "human" , or "myself". Otherwise I feel the need to divulge my last 2 years of experiments on the veg/vegan/raw/ raw vegan/ omni/ pesci/ fruit/ flex  lifestyles which usually leads to people staring me like this like:  :o  :-X

so purdy storm! do you use dressing? or just munch away?

Sometimes I use Bragg's Vinaigrette and sometimes Annie's Balsamic or Red Wine Vinaigrette.  My Whole Foods carries some raw salad dressings, but they're so expensive that I only buy them occasionally and sometimes I just make my own.

ya i hit up whole foods this weekend and it is CRAZY expensive! my local/ smaller health food store is way cheaper!

Mine too...what's up with that?  You'd think the small guy would cost more since they can't get the bulk buying discount that retailers like WF can get.  When I did the juice fast I stopped by WF to get 2  bunches of beets and they were $4.99 each, for 4 smallish beets per bunch!

I dehydrated some raw tostada shells over the weekend so today I'm making guacamole and salsa!  Nom!

i think it is because whole foods is trendy as hell and they figure the yuppies don't mind shelling out twice as much but i do! i'm broke!

My Whole Foods is quite a bit cheaper for some things (almond milk, canned goods, some bulk items like oatmeal...), but their produce is almost always more expensive - and not always organic!  In addition to being more expensive, it's usually not local, whereas my co-op has a lot more local fruit & veg.  I definitely prefer to support my local co-ops, but will go to WF for certain (substantially cheaper) things.  What's also weird is Whole Foods' bulk section is WAY smaller than the co-ops around here.  You'd think a big mega-corporation would have a lot more to choose from...  They hardly have any nuts or dried fruits, and they don't even have nutritional yeast!  :o

Yeah, what's up with their tiny bulk section?  My WF started out as a Wild Oats and they had a bulk section that ran the entire length of the aisle and when WF took over they cut it down to 1/3 the original size!  Weenies!

I go to Whole Foods for items I can't get in my local co-op and for items that are better priced, but that's usually once a month...  if that. I rarely buy produce at Whole Foods because it's almost always overpriced.

Storm I wish I could hire you to be my personal salad-maker. Those look delicious. What's in the last two? I cans ee the obvious stuff like cucumbers but it looks like you have something crumbly or seed-ish on there as well? I've got to get more experimental with my salads again. I go in and out of salad ruts.

They both have hemp seeds and pumpkin seeds.  I love making salads!
