Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Elizahm, you should soak the quinoa overnight if you're planning to sprout it.  I've never heard of anyone eating just soaked quinoa seeds before.  If you don't soak and/or rinse the quinoa, it will be a bit bitter because raw quinoa is coated with saponin.

i have just soaked quinoa overnight before and it has sprouted. very good.

also, store bought almond milk isn't raw, unfortunately, it's all been pasteurized.

Hemp milk is quite amazing too.

Hmmm. I doubt it as well. Making it isn't too hard.

I had some really good "buckwheaties" out of one of Juliano's cook books one time... yum.

Good news! I got a new flash card for my camera and it seems to be working again! It must have been my card that was giving me all the trouble as I suspected! Now I just need to get some batteries (you think I would have bought them at the same time....)

So it looks like I will be able to take pictures of all my yummy raw creations! I'm so excited--pictures make a blog much more exciting!!!

Also--I picked up some parchment paper today to try in my dehydrator--I have an apple cookie recipe and a carrot- pecan burger recipe that I'm going to try making--then I'm going to pick a bread recipe to do! Should keep me busy all weekend!!!

I won't have a variety or quantity of raw food until this weekend.  I still have some processed foods left.  My goal is that by the end of the month I'll be raw.

Goals
1.  Stop be reliant on pre-prepared foods.
2.  Stop my developing cravings for simple carbs.

I brought flax crackers and granola with me to work today, and my co-worker brought me fresh figs.  I'm going to experiment with using chopped fresh mint leaves for making tea, assuming herbal teas aren't raw friendly.  I know that fermented things are still raw friendly, but I'm not all that familiar with how herbal teas are processed.

I definitely found it was easier transitioning to raw over a few weeks time. I also tried to exclude dehydrated and imitation raw foods and just eat salads and raw veggies by themselves. Usually the only thing I prepared or uncooked would be dressings, dips, or desserts.

sun tea is probably raw!  put tea leaves, mint leaves, lemon, raw agave (or not) and whatever else you want into a clear container, let it sit out in the sun for a couple hours then chill.  mmmmm.

I wouldn't see why not. A lot of raw foodists sun-dry things. I used to drink sun tea all of the time!

I'm not sure--but I think most teas are not tea--I think you have to buy raw tea special at a HFS or co-op...tea is one of the "dead" things I'm allowing myself to have. I don't know what I would do without a little tea :)

This is the one I got--it's convection only with no fan...but like I said, if I can at least do up my ceral in it--then I'll be happy :) I'll keep ya'll posted!

HEY! I have that same one!  I got it at a flea market for like $5.  Not sure where it is though.  I think I gave it to Salvation Army.  Shucks, guess I don't have it anymore.  I rarely used it.  I am not a fan of dehyrated fruit, I like it fresh.

Anyway, about the nutmilk, there is such a thing as "raw" nut milk?  I thought the process of getting the protein out of the nuts required heat?  My soymilk maker heats the water up to 180F and grinds the nuts to a very fine pulp.  Is this raw?  What is the definition of raw?  So if something isn't heated to boiling is it still raw?  So my soymilk maker, is that "raw" since it doesn't heat the water/milk past boiling?

Okay, confused now.

I think the tea is dried at higher temps then what you can go beyond raw :(

Snowqueen--as far as I have been told (by other raw-vegans on a raw forum) any "milk" you would buy at the store wil be processed or pasturized making them not raw. In order for an item to stay raw it can not be heated about 115 F degrees--but I've also seen as  low as 105 F.

I know--this is very confusing for me too! But--that is what my Raw August! is all about--working out the kinks and learning the ropes!

ah ok about the tea leaves.

sq.  i like to make raw milk by blending nuts and water for a couple minutes, taking breaks every once in a while so that the blender doesnt heat up the water too much.  that seems to do the trick for me!

Sorry you're feelin bad :(

I'd like to join the thread if you don't mind.  I did a 5 day juice feast law week, and I've been eating 1-2 raw meals a day since.  I don't know what % raw I'll end up with...but I'm really enjoyin it so far.
