Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Awww it's not your fault.  The book was misleading.  I actually did my raw pantry stock up trip based off of their recommendations, so I went through the same thing.

OK--so I just called Nature's Path and the bread is baked above raw temperatures--so it is NOT raw.

I am a total jerk now and have just ruined my month of Rawgust.

I should have checked it out before eating it--but the way the book talks about it, it seems that while it may not be 100% raw that it is a high raw food--that's what I thought--but at the temps they bake it at (I was told between 350-400 F) it is in NO way raw! I feel really misleaded by that book :( thankfully I only ate a very small portion (two small slices) so probably only amounting to a single serving--but I feel like my whole rawgust has been compromised. I'm still going to continue for the rest of the month--but it's been severely tainted and I have lost all credibility... :(

OK, so I am largely ignorant about raw, but I kind of don't understand what's going on here.  Like, what's the damage to be had from eating a slice of bread that isn't technically raw?

capture, you're okay. you're a raw champ! it isn't like you ate some bacon or something. chin up!

anyways, there is a learning curve. you're still learning how to do everything. the bread might not be raw, but there are a lot of raw foods that "aren't raw" in reality that most people are okay with. i don't think it is about 100%, but trying your best. just like with being veggie  :)

You're a runner, so think of this like a race.  In Chariots of Fire (if you haven't seen my favorite movie, rent it tonight!), Eric Liddell falls, gets back up, and wins the race.  It's all about getting back up and moving towards the finish line.

Thanks ladies--I'm feeling better-- I was just so pissed that it turned out to be not raw--why on earth would they promote a totally unraw product in a raw book?? Grrr--I kinda want to bonk their heads together...I mean look how easy it was for me to pick up the phone and call Nautre's Path--they couldn't do the same thing? WTF!

Anyways--I'm back on track and as soon as I poop out the cooked-ness this will all be a flushed memory *hahaha*  ;D See how I joke?

This morning was my week 3 weigh-in. I'm down 2.8 pounds this week, for a total of 8.6 pounds lost so far  http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg193/vigilantsmilies/activity/weighin.gif I love how easy eating raw is making this for me!  Even the desserts are fruits and nuts, so it's really hard to screw up.  I don't think playing on my new elliptical every day is hurting either...hehe.

Wow, Vigilant!  That's great.  You guys are doing so well!

I didn't get to read all this about the Manna bread before I went and bought some, but I did read it before I ate some so now it sits in my freezer.....waiting.  Even though I made no raw commitment, you  guys have so inspired me that I'm seeing how much of the rest of this month I can handle as a raw foodie.

I mixed up those raw "meatballs" yesterday, though because I don't have a food processor I had to make some minor changes.  There was just no way to get the stuff mixed in a blender without adding a little bit of water.  It came out too thin to mound so I added enough ground flax seed to thicken it so that it would.  I also used fresh herbs and fresh garlic.  They kind of look like little turds!  I took a picture I'll post here once I drag my daughter out of bed to download onto the computer (I have no idea how to do it).  I just hope they don't taste like little turds!!  :o

BP--Yummy smoothie! I loooooove smmothies!

Vig--Great job!!!!

Storm--They shouldn't taste like turds--mine looked like that too  ;D

Saturday I made raw zucchini spaghetti with marinara and "turds" and you were right Capture, they may look like turds but they don't taste like turds.  They were actually quite good, though it was weird eating "spaghetti" that wasn't at all warm.  Sunday was Greek Salad: no feta or potato salad.  Real Greek salad doesn't have potato salad in it anyway, that's an American thing according to my ex-bf, Dino, and he should know....born and raised in Athens, Greece.  I did put Kalamata olives in it even though I'm not sure if they were raw or not.  I know canned olives are cooked and processed as are most jarred olives, but I don't know about the Kalamata's from the Whole Foods olive bar.  I buy the ones that are in olive oil, not brine, and they still have the stones in them.  I just don't know.  living-foods.com indicates that sun dried, raw olives are available but hard to find.

I think tonight I may make Capture's Mexican salad.  The salad picture from your blog looks so good and I have some raw flax seed crackers from WF that I can pretend are tortilla chips! :)

Yhat sounds awesome Storm! Defintely put some of your bad ass cilantro into your salsa! It will blow your mind! And if you want your food heated up you can set it one the dehydrator for a little while if yours has room--I have one of those giant round ronco's and the top level is big enough to hold a plate--it does take awhile for stuff to warm up though--but like you--I get sick of of eating cold food--it's nice if it's at least luke warm :)

Yeah--olives are hard! If you're getting them from the olive bar your chances are probably a lot higher than if you got them else where --but yeah...who knows?!? Di you try to ask anyone? They probalby don't know anyways...but you never know :)

Great job on your raw transition!

I'm pshyched I only have 14 days left--I am having mean cravings for boca burgers, fries, pizza, burritos...oi! It's brutal--I also torture myself looking at pictures of food and recipes...I don't know why I am so maschostic towards myself!

i think to get raw olives you need to specifically hunt them out - that most you can get (jarred and barred) are cooked. one of the raw books i have talks about olives and says were you can order them. but still, some olives in a raw dish isn't too shabby.

i made some "taco seeds" yesterday. soaked sunflower seeds and then mixed in some spices. put in dehydrator. house smelled a bit strange but they taste good! i discovered my kale went belly up, so i'm currently out of greens for my smoothies  :-\ i will have to hit the chopper later to get some. i had a pb&j for breakfast... eh!

I was afraid of that.  I guess it's not too harsh of a violation.

OK so Ive had some sprouts on the go for a few days, alfalfa, sunflower, chickpea, and lentil.  The alfalfa sprouts turned out great and tasted wonderful, I used the chickpea to make raw hummus and it was really quite good, but not as good as the store bought brand I like, but the sunflower sprouts were HORRIBLE, they are bitter and taste a bit like sunflower seeds, but awfully bitter-are these an aquired taste? I could barely  choke them down in a roll-up last night.  What can I do with the rest of them?  I think the chickens are going to get them becouse I don't think I can stand to eat them again unless someone has any suggestions.  My Lentils didn't do anything and Im going to try these again.

Hmmmm, I have sunflower sprouts and I don't find them bitter at all.  I'd be curious to hear what someone else thinks of them.  Maybe my taste buds are just a bit different than yours.  I often hear people say that rapini is bitter, but I don't think so.

I hope your chickens appreciate the treat!

OK! Storm...back slowly away from that ledge...I know it's pretty to peer over the edge but you'll only fall and get all boo-booed! You want a yummy fresh banana or some home made zucchini hummus and raw flax crackers MMmmmmMMMMmmm flax crackers!

I'm sending you hugs and thoughts of yummy raw food! Check out yesterdays rawgust blog--I put up a recipe for carrot pecan burgers! Yum yum!!!

You can do it Storm!!! http://i354.photobucket.com/albums/r416/kingkaza101/cheerleader.gif
